For me, gaming is about the content of the game. It's all about what the game has to offer me as a source of fun and fascination, not a show of skill or - god forbid - achievements.
Well that's not entirely accurate - My WoW character has achievements, but most - if not all - are for the corresponding reward. Rusted Proto-Drake, for example.

Actually that's a good example - content. And most of WoW's content is raid isntances.
I've done 'em all. Vanilla, BC, ICC, cleared and packaged (though at lv80 - haven't been playing long).
What sets me apart from most raiders is once I've cleared an instance, I'm not interested in doing it again. My guildmates and I fought for days on the Lich King before finally defeating the boss. After that I stopped raiding and was kicked from the guild, which I happily accepted.
This was the same for all raids - once I'd seen the content I lost interest, except Ulduar, the most interesting and fun raid in WotLK.
I was never interested in doing hardmodes for loot, and especially not achievements for the sake of achievements, or the godawful mounts from ICC (seriously, they're crap).
I'm not calling negatives on those who pursue this - you pay your fifteen bucks a month and are therefore entitled to play however you like.

This goes the same for me for all games - I play the single player campaign on the Regular/Standard/Normal difficulty only, because that's the intended material in the game. The gameplay, story, enemy challenge and last and least, visuals. I never chase Veteran/Hardcore/Nightmare modes, and rarely chase stats or achievements unless the pursuit is fun, and not too challenging.

I don't class myself as a casual gamer, nor hardcore. I play a wide variety of games and spend long stretches of hours playing. I'm wanting to know if there's a community of players like me, who still know what fun and interesting content is.

I game because it's a fun hobby, it's a way to pass the time, and because it's a way to escape.

Um... I play games because they are an amazing interactive storytelling medium: I play them for narrative. I suppose that could fall under "content," but I'm not sure; that's a bit vague.

2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th poll options should all come under content.

I play games to kill time and have fun, make of that what you will.

I play for fun and for passing by time. Also i'll get a certain game like Prototype and have that available after a long stressful day.

Well, for me it was a few of the above- mainly it's just a fun hobby, a form of escaping real life (as a poster above said).

I also use games to socialize a lot- be it an MMO (WoW at the moment.. SWTOR soooooon)
Xbox Live
etc etc

For eg, I never really got on with my brother, but when we're playing a game together we have fun, which we usually never have.
So yeah, socializing, bonding. It's nice

Entertainment in every form.
That's pretty much it.
I'm quite the same. I want to be amused so I play games--though when it comes down to it, isn't almost everyone like that?

Other - I tend to play games either because I find them artistically interesting in terms of the art direction, the narrative or even the gameplay itself and feel that there's something new to be experienced there; or I play them because I want to try out and see how the developers have done the game mechanics.

Games that are designed for pure, mindless time-killing tend to bore and irritate me (I'm looking at you Nintendo).

Funny how in a community of gamer the OP couldn't think of the "fun" option. But, my idea of fun could be basically any game aslong as it's done well.

Pretty much exactly what I was thinking.

I play games for the fun factor, and also the pleasure of totally mopping the floor with a screaming swearing 12 year old.

For fun, I guess. Why do I read books, or watch films, or listen to music? Oh, and I guess it's also because it's sort of like being in a book, or a film. You have a certain amount of control over what's going on, and you can influence the way it ends up. In a film, you can't do that. So I really enjoy gaming because of that.
