So I was listening to Pandora and a live version of some song I like came up, but I personally hate listening to live music. It just annoys me. I'll take the studio version of a song over it's live version any time. But there must be plenty of people who are into live music or else you wouldn't see all these live albums and singles everywhere.

So what are your thoughts on live music?

EDIT: I do mean recordings of live shows.

It's alright I guess. I prefer actually seeing the live music though.

It depends on the bands.

Live versions can show how talentless they are (i.e. Linkin Park) or show how incredibly awesome they are (i.e. Iron Maiden)

The Trooper Live in Rio is the most badass live performance ever.

I love it, but it's easy to mess up.

I'll find an example of a great gig I was at last year.
You should read the topic instead of jumping in m'dear ;)

He means live recorded shit.

It depends a lot on the band and their music.
Muse is awesome when performing live, maybe even better than when you listen to their records.
Björk on the other hand makes such complicated music that bringing it live simply doesn't do her music justice.

It's awesome. Especially with AC/DC. C'mon, they are made of win live. Even though they're all in their fifties.

Yeah, if I'm there at a live gig, it's great, but I rarely enjoy recordings of live shows, and I'd be more likely to buy DVDs of a band's music videos than of a live show.

HAve to admit I've always loved Iron Maiden tho, and that video was excellent, but then it seems like the set was designed as a playground for Bruce to run and jump around on! Makes sense to give the vocalist things to do when you have guitar solos like Maiden do tho.

I think Tim Minchin live would be good.
I can say from first hand experience that seeing Tim Minchin live is definitely good.

If it's decently recorded, a live album is ideal. The unplugged sessions for example are excellent. Tim Minchin's albums are pretty darn good too, as is alot of the Flat Duo Jets stuff(although, sometimes the volume balance is a little off and you won't hear vocals).

I'm more likely to be annoyed if my records are over-produced.

There are very few bands/artists I would prefer to hear perform live, since quite often a lot of what I like about their music is down to the studio production process (it's kind of hard to layer your voice into a choir of yourself in realtime after all), and other times their performance is perfectly fine but the song is missing something thanks to session performers not joining the tour so their part is just missing rather than replaced, recording with a choir/orchestra and then not performing live with said choir/orchestra, etc.

The ones that make it work either didn't have a lot of complicated studio production going on in the first place, or they don't even try to replicate their album sound and instead present a fresh spin on familiar material rather than just a less impressive rendition of it.

Most just end up sounding "like their album, only not as good".

If I'm at the concert, it's great.

If I'm listening to a live song RECORDED, I throw the CD out the window.

An audience ruins Fear of the Dark...

Change the title of the thread! I thought we were talking about "going to see a live show" for a second, rather than "listening to doctored up recordings of concerts." You know most live recordings - of mainstream music, anyway, are largely redubbed in a post-production studio to make them listenable. There aren't many bands that can actually hack out a good tune live, at least not good enough for a studio-quality release. Love music recordings are definitely only good if the band is capable.

Music is, by nature, supposed to be live.
Live music is always superior.
Ok, let's discuss this. You say "live music is always superior". This seems like an awful blanket statement. You've never heard a studio version of a song that was better than the live version??

And how is music "supposed to be live"? You don't think studio recordings have soul or something?

Please elaborate.

It depends. Bands such as Iron Maiden are better live than they are in the studio (Maiden are great in the studio, but gods live), but then there are other bands, like Mastodon which lend themselves better to the studio.

It varies, really depends on the band, some suck live, but are amazing in studio, and some are simply godly when they play live.
