I was watching tv when I saw a commercial for GTA:Chinatown Wars(the one that mentions the bailout). When I saw that it made me think of what it would be like to play a game about the economy crashing or small businesses failing. That's when I came up with the idea of a RPG about our economy. I also wanted to include issues like healthcare and basically make a game about modern society and politics(but from a "fun" perspective). I call this RPG Turmoil.

The game's basic mold uses mechanics used plenty in games but the story and style is what sets it aparts. It has character classes just like Final Fantasy and skills like Mass Effect. But the way it presents them(as actual jobs) is what makes it different. By learning certain skills(say driving or persuasion) you qualify for jobs(say a Service Writer or Assistant Manager). The job itself gives you a salary(monetary rewards) and benefits(a company car or healthcare for example). I know it sounds boring but I honestly think I've found ways to make it interesting. The Service Writer job has you working up front at an auto repair shop by day but operating a chop shop at night. The Assistant Manager(a job you get working at some of the clubs and stores) usually involves preventing fights from breaking out or securing deals between the business and it's "undergroud" associates(more on that later.

From what I've written above you probably can guess the game's story has something to do with crime and other seedy activities. I chose this because I honestly believe our economy is being ruined because of misbehavior hence I decided on morally questionable gameplay. Despite the theme Turmoil has plenty of shooting and convential gameplay.

Now I give you my problem. I've tried my best to make the game entertaining but I'm not so sure about it. Is a game about subprime mortgages and recessions fun? Do people really want these kinds of themes in their story? Please give me feedback on the game.

I wanna play the game that's identical to life please. It would be well interesting and it would require no innovation. Just input all the data in existance and press 'play'

Your concept falls apart right here. Games are games, not books or tapes. No matter how good a background story you come up with, your game will only be average if the actual game part of it is derivative and unoriginal.

You need an enemy. Or enemies. You're describing a game that is the economic equivalent of cleaning the house. There's no real opposition, as long as you keep working, things get better.

The violent crime aspect doesn't really have much to do with the economy, except that it tends to decline as the economy gets better. Mugging people on the street doesn't really appeal so much when you can make more doing something safer. For that matter, the misbehavior and crime ruining the American economy is all on the top. Are you going to have shootouts with Enron and Ken Lay substitutes?

If you really want a game on how crime and seedy activity are ruining a country, set the game in Afghanistan or Somalia or Columbia. The gangs of New York or Vice City or Arthur Anderson are no match for dealing with the Mujahadeen or Pirates or Drug Lords. It'll be a lot more exciting than taking on white collar crime.

Okay it seems the idea doesn't seem to interesting to people. I know it sounds kind of boring but that's kind of why I'm working so hard to make the gameplay interesting. So far I've come up with 5 levels:
Level 1: "Welcome to Reality"
You are hired as a Service Writer for an auto repair shop which also serves as a chop shop to dismantle stolen cars. By stealing cars and bringing them to the chop shop unnoticed you get money.
Level 2: "Relax with Prozac"
You are hired at a rave club known for illegal drugs. Your job requires you to hide the drugs, prevent any fights, and help get all supplies out of the club when the police come in. Later on you are allowed to sell drugs as well.
Level 3: "Up in Flames"
Working for a former Wall Street executive you are sent to New York to destroy his property in an insurance fraud scam. Destroying his mansion and cars acheives this goal. You may also work for his lawyer who needs help keeping his clients secrets hidde(chasing down witnesses, sneaking contraband around security, etc)
Level 4: "Robin Hood"
The main assignments here are related to burgulary. Sticking up liqour stores, breaking and entering houses, and shoplifting gives you supplies. The supplies can later be sold at pawn shops.
Level 5:"The Greenest Country"
You work for a Drug Cartel operating mainly in the southwest. The cartel gives you contraband to sell so long as you give them their cut of the share. Unfortunately their demand increases at a very fast rate. To keep a profit you must deceive them and fight against them.

Does this sound good?
