I'm not trying to be sexist or anything. (Still curious why I'd need to clarify this on THIS awesome forum). I've just always been curios how others choose their characters.

I always play as a male character, since I'm a dude...that's it really.

Maybe YOU can make it more interesting!

I play male simply because that's what I identify with. I've got friends who go with the "If I'm going to stare at someone's butt for the whole game, I'd rather it be a girl's /snide remark". But that reason doesn't really work with me because I don't play game to get a cheap sexual thrill.

I probably should have picked Male playing as Male because I play MMOs and have sunk hundreds (or more) hours into it and they are all male. Right now I am doing a playthrough of Skyrim as female for something different and just selected that without even turning my brain on.

Oh well.

Female, always unless I have a very specific character concept that has to be male to work.

Female character models almost always look and sound better than the males.

I'm 50/50 no real reason just like mixing it up sometimes, though on Mount and Blade I read it was more of a challenge to play as a female character, if you ever wanted to experience sexist behavior in a game? M&B is the game for you.

As a gentleman,

In offline RPGs, I find myself partaking in the role of a fellow gentleman with utmost frequency, say, 99% of the time. In fact, I have not done otherwise yet, but Mass Effect with the ever so talented Jennifer Hale has tempted me many a time.

In online RPGs, I am a gentleman more often than not, say, 80% of the time.

I might suppose that this phenomenon has something to do with my desire to immerse myself in the worlds I temporarily inhabit. Assuming a gender so unfamiliar to my person would naturally prohibit maximum immersion.

captcha: how quaint.

Male playing as female. It's about aesthetics for me. A large number of male character models in RPGs nowadays are muscular mountains of manliness, and as I've always found that look to be rather ugly, I choose female because it just looks better. When the males haven't been shooting up steroids, I choose whichever I'm in the mood to play as. Though because of the above, I usually find myself playing as a female.

Both, depends on the game really.
In Mass Effect for example I almost always play as MaleShep because I can't stand FemShep's voice. In general I play females more, unless there are Dwarves, love me some Dwarves.

Male for sure, I generally prefer playing as a dude since I am one. Ill try out a chick for a playthrough or two, but my mains will always be dudes.

Also in a lot games I just prefer the Male VA, for example Mass Effect.

I used to do that but I was 14 at the time. But I outgrew the thrill of this cheap of sensations from games. ...*ahem*, I do occasionally name my character something juvenile and stupid if their name is going to be used a lot...what I'm saying is, the butt thing isn't my thing any more.

Nowadays, I don't care. Unless I have a specific concept in mind, I could go for either gender (in games only). I might choose female because the male is too ugly, or male just because I like their haircuts more. I might make my choice from a powergamer-ish perspective, too, or just to see gender specific content (if any). I don't have a preference set in stone.

Lady playing as ladies.
Most games have dudes as protaganists anyway, so if I have a chance to be my own gender I usually take it. Plus I love character customisation, so making my own character is usually more fun for me if it's a lady (trying to make a non-fugly dude in Saints Row 3 is impossible!).

Female as female.
It just makes sense in my head, I actually don't even consider the male option, not because I'm sexist mind.
