just a little public survey, i got into an arguement with someone the other day who believes that to eat with a fork in your right hand and a knife in your left hand is the "wrong" way of eating and that no-one does it, i argued that not only is there no "correct" way of eating, but that i know/have heard of several people who eat said way, so to put this arguement to rest, how do escapees hold cutlery?

I change mid-meal.

Edit: Not to be difficult, but I really do. I carve my food, then switch around.

... the 'normal' way (knife in right, fork in left), though if I'm just using one utensil, it'll be in the right hand, regardless of which one it is.

A better question would be: how do you hold your knife? (And no, that's not supposed to be a euphemism...)

Fork right, knife left. Not sure if that's wrong, but my mother drilled manners into us as they were drilled into her. SO either I was a good little girl, or have been doing it wrong my whole life.

Actually, it is correct manners to eat with the fork in the left hand and knife in the right hand.

It's called continental style etiquette.

Much more efficient than the ridiculous American method anyway, which is to cut the food (knife in right hand), then set the knife down, to then switch the fork to the right hand.

It's not really a matter of left & right, since some people are left handed so their dominant hand is different.

I'm right handed, so if I'm using a knife and fork as a pair, using the fork to hold the food and the knife to cut it, then I'll hold my fork in my left hand and my knife in my right (dominant) hand, as cutting or sawing requires more control than pinning.

However, if I'm using my fork mainly to shovel or skewer food that doesn't require cutting, then I'll hold it in my right (dominant) hand and usually put the knife down, or hold it in my left hand but only use it as an accessory to guide food onto my fork, not as a cutting tool.

Additionally, there is actually a "correct" way of eating, it's called Dining Etiquette (and varies from culture to culture). There's no law against not following it, but don't be surprised if you're called out for no eating "correctly" as the established norms of Etiquette dictate.

I'm what my grandad refers to as 'cag handed'. I'm right handed in everything I do, but I find it really unfomfortable to cut with my right hand, despite it being my dominant hand.

I was critiqued on this a number of times, as as Daystar Clarion pointed out, etiquette demands that you hold your fork with your left and knife with your right. I'm a filthy working class peasant though, so I guess I'm excused for my retardation of table manners.

Most of the people I know (in the US) use their right hand to cut food and left to eat.

Oh I know, but the style I described is actually referred to as 'American style'.

It doesn't mean all Americans eat that way.

Cutting : fork left, knife right
Actual eating : fork right, knife down
I swear, that's got to be a slightly more efficient way of eating food than just smashing your head against the table until the food finds its way into your mouth.

Always have your knife in your dominant so you have the flexibility and freedom in your weaker hand. While having the knife in your domiant hand so you can stab, cut put pressure on the target area.

What i was talking about using a knife and fork you need the flexibility to move your fork in place and then pin it down on the food. While your domiant hand can cut, stab and ummm put pressure on the target of the area of food.

So for me it is fork in left and knife in right

fork, right
knife, left

I don't know why and I don't care about etiquette. It's my preference and I can't bloody carve with my right hand for some reason.
So yeah, I stick with how I'm physically able to eat comfortably.

Right handed, fork in right, knife in left, but everyone else I know does it the other way round, regardless of their handedness.

Well I personally blend everything and use a straw to suck it up in the fashion of our insect overlords.

But seriously ... I'm surprised there's this much deviation from fork-left knife-right. WTF? Didn't your mothers teach you even basic etiquette?

As a side note ... I use chopsticks usually. Caucasian here though.

This, knife is always, ALWAYS in the right hand if it is being used. Or else you are just rude D:<
When the knife is not in use, the fork shall occupy the right hand.
I am done now.

Oh man, this is like remembering a code to a lock! I can't remember it outside of actually doing it. I'm actually drawing a blank O_O
