With the highly anticipated MGSV: The Phantom Pain hitting store shelves in less than a week, I figured it would be fitting to take a look back at this classic and groundbreaking series and see what is indeed the best in the series, before the final installment in the Metal Gear saga from Kojima lands into the public (it seems like he really is done this time).

So what do you guys think his best game has been? I myself have only played MGS3, but I thought that game was phenomenal, really impressed by the level of depth in the gameplay, accompanied with a compelling story with a really charismatic cast of characters. Really interested to see what other things he has managed to do with previous and later installments.

I say the first MGS was the best. Not only does it hold nostalgic value as one of my all-time favourite PS1 games, but it has some of the most enjoyable gameplay I've experienced in ANY game. Plus, it has the benefit of seeming far more grounded and realistic than the latter entries into the series.

The first MGS was by far the best for me and it went down hill from there imo. The first one struck that perfect balance between game and realism which the later ones never managed to do. It also had the best boss fights imo although I liked the bosses in 3 slightly more.

I have not played the 4th however as 2 and 3 killed a lot of my enjoyment of the series. That said I am still hopeful for the 5th entry and may pick it up but it will probably be in a few years.

Also I loved the VR missions in the first one and the special missions add on pack was also great fun.

The first MGS was really great.

But I'm gonna have to go with MGS3. That game, imo, took everything I loved about the first game and multiplied it several times

Metal Gear Solid 1

It's the most down to earth of the series and also has a more subtle emotional core, as opposed to 3 which kind of hits you over the head with it. I like MGS3, but the instant The Boss gets introduced she basically spells out the game's entire emotional journey in that one codec conversation.

MGS1 also has the best rogues gallery. Heck Psycho Mantis alone is better than every other villain from the sequels combined. Add to that, Revolver Ocelot, Sniper Wolf, Vulcan Raven, and Liquid Snake and no other team in the series even compares.

David Hayter performed his best work as well, making Snake sound gruff but not playing it up as much as he did in later entries.

2 is Kojima blowing a big fat raspberry in our face, and 4 isn't even worth mentioning.

Toss up between the original Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 3. Both have what I'd consider some the best and most memorable moments from the series. I would have to go with MGS3 has my overall favourite. It was the pinnacle of the classic Metal Gear gameplay plus all the little extras you could find it is also one of the most replayable.

MGS 3 by far. It's not even a contest. I don't think MGS V is going to change my opinion. MGS3 was something else, man. It was a game like no other back in the day. Revolutionary in so many ways as far as I'm concerned. And then Subsistence came out with better camera and I was in love yet again. I even enjoyed all the talk on the radio about weapons and equipment and movies etc. Everything was so enjoyable. I'm only saddened that we'll probably never see a PC version of MGS 3.

One. Pretty cool.

Two isn't bad, but Rose kinda bogs things down, as does Emma and Vamp was never a good villain.

Three is alright, but LADDER CLIMBING, and the Snake Eater song aren't that great. Not to mention the Cobra Unit is one hit wonders with no character. Eva isn't really worth mentioning, the revelation the coolest thing Ocelot did was revolver spin a bunch of bees to death does not redeem the boring big bad. The Boss herself is pretty cool, but too obvious and too much other crap weighting that down.

Four is a overblown mess of bad narrative and uncoordinated gameplay. It has a bunch of cool shit, but nnghghuuuhhh. 18 twenty minute cutscenes is 16 too many.

Metal Gear Solid 3 without a doubt.

While the story and characters of MGS1 and MGS3 are about the same in quality, MGS3's gameplay is vastly superior and still holds up to this day.

On a side note, Twin Sankes might have been a contestant if it weren't for some of the changes they made to the voice acting and sound design.

From best to worst:

1. MGS 3: The third entry in the series had a weaker set of villains than the first, but almost everything else was stellar, despite the story being heavy handed it was still pretty solid. A good mix of serious story beats mixed with the usual MGS brand wackiness and jokes. The gameplay is still solid and I would consider the best of the MGS series. The Cobra unit, Ocelot, and Volgin are some of the best villains in the series, only really exceeded by FOXHOUND and Liquid from 1. The gameplay segments were also lengthy but still broken up by its entertaining story.

2. MGS 1: Easily the second best in the series, only really for the aging gameplay that doesn't quite measure up to 3. The Twin Snakes remake is also solid with gameplay and graphics improvements that save the game from the same kind of jarring effect a lot of PS1 games experience when trying to go back to playing them. FOXHOUND still sets the standard for MGS villain teams, and the likes of Psycho Mantis still remains one of the best mind screws in MGS games today. As others have said, like 3, the story manages not to get too zany or up its own ass with messages.

3: MGS 2: This is kind of a love it or hate it kind of game, I didn't mind playing as Raiden, but he just wasn't as cool as Snake, and the rest of the game just doesn't measure up to that awesome first tanker chapter. It doesn't help that Dead Cell is mostly composed bosses that just can't hold a candle to FOXHOUND or the Cobra unit, I would say they are even more lackluster than the B&B unit from 4, only Vamp manages to stand out in my mind. Solidus was ok, but he was no Liquid snake. The Big Shell was also kind of just a boring map compared to Shadow Moses, all that orange just became samey and dull after awhile. What saves this game from the bottom slot is that Big Shell was still an open space with large chunks of gameplay that managed to stay entertaining throughout, the final sword battle atop Arsenal Gear was also a nice finale. The story got weird towards the end, but ultimately still ok.

4:MGS 4: I wanted to like this game at first, the first two acts are fine, great graphics, sensible if still silly story, and good chunks of gameplay that featured the classic MGS action with some fun new tools and weapons. Then the gameplay falls off a cliff after the motorcycle chase in Europe, you end up with pathetically short gameplay segments punctuated by excruciatingly long cutscenes. There was an infographic on r/metalgearsolid a few days ago, that showed the amount of cutscenes in the game and how long the average cutscene was, for all the other MGS games, the average cutscene length was about 4-5 minutes, for MGS the average length was 9 minutes, with the larger ones being a series of scenes 20+ minutes long.

I can stand a lot of cutscenes when there's enough gameplay in between to justify it, in a 50 hour game, 7 hours of cutscenes is just fine, but in a game where the gameplay is about 15 hours, filling up 7 of those with cutscenes makes it feel like I'm watching a movie rather than playing a game. the last 2 chapters feel almost embarrassingly short, with a lame sneaking sequence back on to Shadow Moses where you are mostly sneaking past unmanned drones, and the final level on the submarine that seems to just be one hour long gameplay sequence between the intro and outro cutscenes that goes right in to the even longer epilogue cutscenes.

Coupled with the kind of lame B&B corps, and Ocelot being the only other villain made for one of the weakest boss lineups in the series. It doesn't help that the story never seemed that interesting either.

The gameplay parts that were there were good, but I don't think I've ever played another game that seemed so hellbent on having me watch it rather than play it.

For the spinoffs, I would probably place Peace Walker between MGS 3 and 2, and the ACID games right around MGS 2 on the list.

Peace Walker is my favorite, simply due to the sheer number of things it has for you to do.

I see theres alot of MGS3 here, but MGS3 never let you get your hands on an M202 [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M202_FLASH], nor did it let you go monster hunting [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdXJV2dSGGk], and it most certainly never sent you on missions where your objective was to take pictures of ghosts. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vktt4g1jKqU]

I still like MGS3 though.

You know, I'm not sure I can even really answer that, they're all pretty great (yes, even Guns of the Patriots)

I suppose it really comes down between Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater... hm, my personal favorite is Snake Eater, but damn, Sons of Liberty is pretty amazing really... except for Rose.

If it doesn't have a number then it's a spin-off, that and I'm bitter that a game essential for understanding 5 comes out on a handheld, frikken Kingdom Hearts, having to own like 4 different systems to play all the games.

Still, it's a good game, it's just most people didn't play it compared to the numbered entries, a pity considering that it's pretty much the story prequel that sets up TPP and its gameplay elements are practically the prototype for all the base building stuff in 5 as well. I've heard numerous comments from people that think MGS 5 will be the first game to feature the fulton system.

I remember when ground zeroes first came out and most people were kind of confused over who the hell Paz and Chico were, a lot of gamers kind of expected 5 to follow from 3 rather than missing a massive chunk of storyline in between

I voted for the first one because out of all of the MGS games I've played it's the only one that I played through the completion...more than once. I've played a bit of MGS2 but I don't recall making it too far into that one. I recall a boss-fight on top of an oil rig. I've never played the third one and I made it to Shadow Moses in the fourth one. I straight up didn't like the fourth, I was bored by the second outside of marveling at how far gaming has come (ie; my favorite thing to do in MGS2 was to just shoot bottles at the bar in the boat as Snake and shoot at other small things to see various object reactions.) MGS on the PSX though is a game that I just thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end.

Note that of those on the list, I haven't played 4 or Peace Walker. But 3 gets the vote for me. While 1 has far more nostalgic value, 3, IMO, represents the pinnacle of the series for me. It even gets the #9 spot in my top 10 favourite games.

Also youve made yourself clear that you know the events of Peace Walker are relevant to what happens in Ground Zeroes, and possibly TPP as well.

Compare this to Portable Ops, which only had a veiled mention at the start of Peace Walker, literally telling us to forget about it.

Peace Walker is on PS3 as part of the MGS HD collection, so you dont really have that excuse anymore.

MGS3 by far. As the earliest game chronologically, I didn't have to worry about getting bogged down by continuity issues. It also has the most self-contained story, and the most clear theme. It also felt the closest to a real James Bond game than any actual Bond game.
