Well if you like genuine psychological horror then you can't go wrong with Silent Hill... never played the first ones because I was denied access to them in my fragile youth but from what I've heard it's a real nightmare.
But if you are more into campy not entirely serious horror then I would say Resident Evil.
Of course you could always start with Dead Space, it feels like a logical introduction to the survival horror genre.
However I voted Silent Hill.

I advise "Eternal Darkness" over the rest, but "Penumbra" is an EXTREMELY underrated game that deserves some more cover.

Very true. It's a great game that makes up the lack of any originality by excellent execution (and maybe the best Sounddesign of any game ever).

Another Game that would be a good introduction to Survival Horror is Alien vs. Predator 2 for PC by Monolith. Aged a bit, but the Marine Campaign is very intense and a good mix between atmosphere and action.

Penumbra is also excellent, thanks to great gameplay and a very scary mood, but as an introduction to horror games it lacks too much in the presentation department. Put it on your To-Do List but don't start with it.

In the end i voted for Silent Hill too. While Resident Evil is kind of enjoyable and while the older games were scary at times, it's not really that...horror...ish.
Silent Hill however is, despite some weaker games lately, the best horror gaming franchise of all time.

if you just want the biggest scare you can get, go for the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series. they will make you shit bricks.

Depends. Do you like cheap pop-out scares, or deep mind-fucking isolational horror? If the latter, then go with Silent Hill 2.

Well I prefer the deep pysco-horror to the carnival pop-out ride, but from what ive heard, Dead space is basicly creutures from the Thing (great movie) popping out at you.

I have every Valve game except L4d. How can a game without a story be scary? Im pretty sure that isnt the focus of the game, though.

Penumbra, it's not very well known but it's god damn creepy. You have no weapons, only your wits. Your character gets scared himself when hiding, so you can't stare at the enemies while hiding because you'll freak out and stand up.

I also voted for Silent Hill. I'd suggest getting all the games (or at least the first four).

Either the Silent Hill series or Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. The first is a consistently good series, and the second is, in my opinion, one of the greatest horror games ever made.

i think it depends. what do you mean by something nice :p resi evil is a good way to get into the horror genre, it's not really very scary for the most part. silent hill can be genuinely pretty disturbing at times. which is good if you like it, but otherwise i'd try resi first.
