hey, in all the recent activity surrounding half life, i was wondering what my favourite chapter was in HL2, then i realised i wanted to know what everyone else thought too! personally my favourite is highway 17, the long, lonely vistas and haunting music, with the remains of society on open display, with the little shacks that have been shelled telling a tale of desperation and desolation. look forward to seeing what people think. There are more chapters, but you can only have 8 options so, if you pick other, please comment and say what "other".

No love for Sandtraps or Follow Freeman?!

My personal favorite is Anticitizin One, with Nova Prospekt following. Its when the combat starts getting more interesting, and when the story actually gets moving beyond "Freeman goes here, then travels to here, then here, etc."

When I first played Half life 2 I was about 13 and "We Dont Go To Ravenholme" really freaked me out with all the sounds from the zombies but I've gone back and played it recently and now really enjoy it. It's got enough quiet moments to make you jump when you run into stuff

Either "Highway 17" or "Anticitizin One".

Highway 17 is like this great roadtrip adventure where you bump into abandoned houses that tell their own little story.

Anticitizin One makes you feel like your a part of this much bigger revolution.

I also greatly enjoy those small segments inbetween actual levels. Like the moment you made it past the dam in "Water Hazard" or when you reach the light at the end of the tunnel right after Ravenholme. It's those little moments that make you sigh with relief and think; "Finally made it!'

Ravenholme. It was brilliantly designed as both a playground for the newly acquired gravity gun and as a tense and terrifying experience. It also played well as a nice break from the enemy breathing down your neck riverboat chase, to something which was slower paced, but no less nerve racking.

For me its a toss up between Ravenholm and super fun mega gravity gun fun times.

However, if you were to ask me which was the best level design I'd be hard pressed to choose. It's Valve, they just do good level design everywhere.

Ravenholm was easily the most successful of all the levels IMO - the atmosphere still scares me every playthrough, even if I play my own music in the background.

Never really liked Highway 17 or sandtraps - for one, they felt like they could have been shortened and merged with little effect on anything, and for another, the vehicle controls are just annoyingly bad.

Definitely Ravenholm. It's a superbly constructed level, with a great atmosphere, creepy music, loads of stuff to play around with for the gravity gun and is the first level where you get the shotgun, which is easily the most solid weapon in the game.

Oh, and Grigori. Much love for the good Father.

Highway 17 for me.

A massively long road, gorgeous beach scenery, and a whole bunch of fun fights along the way. Darkened Tunnel with Zombies, Crane & Shipping Yard, Gunship at the Lighthouse, etc.

Honestly, I'd say the intro and outro with the G-Man.

The intro with him really sets the tone of the over-all game and how you're not really doing things out of your own free will. You're doing the actions you do because there's a higher-up pulling the strings. You were placed in City 17 by him at that specific time, and he makes sure to watch over you as things go on.

Then there's the outro, where the G-Man returns to inform you that you've done a very excellent job, so good that he's received some 'interesting offers for your services'. He's just about to put you away again for future use when the Vortigaunts get in the way at the start of Episode 1.

While neither of these are actual levels, they're the highlights of the game for me because they add so much to the story. Everytime the G-Man speaks up, I feel a chill down my spine and feel giddy waiting to see what he has to say this time. It adds a real mysterious element over the entire plot.

But the this thread was about favorite gameplay level and I've gone off on a rather long tangent about the two parts of the game that takes the gameplay away. Silly me. Heh. As for favorite gameplay level, Dark Energy for sure. I loved running around the Citadel with the Super Gravity Gun, as well as the final confrontation with Doctor Breen.

My personal favorite would be the first level. I don't remember what it was called so I guessed red letter day. You start out with a creepy person talking in a raspy voice, and most of us not to have played half life recently, forgot who he was. Then your on a train with people. You walk around in this new world thinking "what the hell?" and "But I wanted to kill something!" next thing you know you're running away from people trying to murder you with no defense what so ever.
