For me it's MGS1, this game blew my mind when I first played it. I love the incredible soundtrack, the timeless boss battles, the gritty dark atmosphere, the voice acting, and the simplicity of the story compared to the later games in the series. Plus it also had two different endings depending on your performance in the torture room, which for the time was pretty amazing. I still play this game 2-3 times a year on my PS1 emulator because it's just that good to me.

What's your favourite game in the series and why?

Only played 1,2 and 3 then I sort of lost interest although I have played a little of 4 and 5 round a friends house just not enough to say I have played it properly as such.

For me Metal Gear Solid on playstation is by far the best and most fun. The later games just seemed to lose that spark that made this one so special and the VR missions were amazing I even got the special missions disc so I could play more and ofc play as the Ninja. I got some enjoyment out of 2 and 3 and actually really liked the characters in 3 as well but I was sort of done by then the series had started to push towards a direction I did not find as enjoyable.

MGSV has the best gameplay, MGS3 was (probably) the most coherent. MGS4 is pretty much just MGS fanservice all the way (and I don't see that as a bad thing - not the entire time anyway). But I picked MGS2. It's certainly not flawless - hell, some would argue it's the most flawed of them all. But I think I love it because it's the most ambitious of the lot.

Gameplay is really all MGSV has going for it to be honest. The story, the atmosphere, and the soundtrack all pale in comparison to it's predecessors.

The original Metal Gear on the MSX, because it's the only one that I've played.
I guess that also makes it my least favorite though.

Snake Eater. Cold War Bond references abound. Definitely felt like the director was throttling back the craziness and 'art at the expense of gameplay' factor to a reasonable level before opening it back up all the way for Guns of the Patriots. The only one that I wish was longer with more tropical jungle segments, interspersing guards with native predators.

MGS is my favourite series, and I pretty much love all of them.

Snake Eater however stands out as a cut above in nearly every department, and I'd go so far as to call it the best game ever made. If someone really wants I can explain my reasons, but I fear it'd end up being an overly-long essay.

While I can't in any seriousness say the stories are the best ever, Metal Gear Solid 3 kept my attention and actually inspired me to go play 1 and 2. Kind of lost interest then but I will still pick 3 up from time to time.

I love MGS V, but Metal Gear Solid 3 still stands as my favorite in the entire series. I just love the 60's James Bond/Cold War storyline, mixed with fantastic boss battles and excellent level design and one of the best endings in all of gaming.

Definitely Metal Gear Solid 3 for me. I've enjoyed almost all of the Metal Gear Solid games I've played ad they all have their good points - Metal Gear Solid was a technical milestone, Sons of Liberty was an engrossing piece of art, Portable Ops and Peace Walker have a cracking squad building core mechanic and Guns of the Patriots wrapped up the game in an incredibly satisfying and exciting way but for me Snake Eater pips all of them. The primarly jungle-based environment was gorgeous, the plot was not too mental, a lot of the goofiness was dialed back, the basic stealth systems and management stuff was wonderfully immersive and the boss fights were at their absolute peak.

MGS3. Story and gameplay.

I can understand people saying that MGSV has better gameplay, but I disagree. Kaz and Ocelot can't stop talking in your ear all the freakin' time. It's more than annoying. You have to stop upgrading your stuff very early on for gameplay to stay fun because once you upgrade some stuff it just becomes retarded easy. And buddies, while a cool addition to the game, make that problem even worse. It's not a very well balanced game. The fact that you're constantly on the lookout for best soldiers means that you're not playing the game as much as you're focusing on extracting personnel with good stats. And then most of them can die anyway because shitty game design and story are shitty. And you have to keep collecting resources so you can pay for your deployment in the field. Jesus fuckin' Christ.

But my biggest gripe of all is that weapon selection is limited. Weapon modding is cool, but why can't I bring two pistols with me? Why do I have to select just one assault weapon and one sniper rifle? Or whatever the hell else I like? Why do I have to collect so many resources all the time? It feels like playing two separate games, none of which are very fun in the end because of it. The motherbase is a useless addition to the game as well. There are so many things in this game that exist only because the entirety of MGS V was designed with microtransactions in mind and it shows.

People wanted to know how a fully priced game would look like if it tried to milk people for microtransactions, and MGSV is that game. Motherbase exists because KONAMI wanted to implement microtransactions. They did that with FOB bases and what is basically a protection racket that you pay Konami to keep your base safe. All of that bullshit could have been avoided if there simply wasn't a motherbase to begin with. No motherbase, no FOB's and no microtransactions. Without that there would have been no need to collect boring resources all the time, and the game would actually feel like a real stealth game instead of like some stupid fuckin' grindfest.

Or you know, maybe you can have a motherbase that is actually fun to play with if it was designed to be fun. But it wasn't.

MGS3 is definitely the best overall and is my true love.

That said, the actual controls and mechanical gameplay of 5 is amazing. If we had that smoothness in MGS3, I don't think I could ever be compelled to stop playing it.

For story, Metal Gear Solid 3, I cried near the end when instead of doing something in a cutscene like I was expecting they made me push a button
For mindfuckery, Metal Gear Solid 2, if you've played this you understand
For gameplay, Peacewalker, I love strategy games.
