Many of you may have already seen this article here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108081-We-Dare-Gets-12-Rating-Parents-Go-Nuts], but for those that haven't: We Dare is a Wii exclusive title that is essentially a big old game of Wii Spin the Bottle. There is an obvious sexual undertone to the game, but it appears to be working on cheese value more than anything. If you are seriously interested in checking the game out, view the trailer below.

However, the main point of the article I previously linked is the actual rating the game has received. Currently, it is to be released in the UK with a 12+ rating. There has, predictably, been a bit of outrage. And by a bit, I mean a metric fucktonne. So, my question is to all of you, what would YOU rate We Dare at?

I myself would probably sway toward a 15+ rating. I don't usually find myself agreeing with the mass opinion when ratings of games come into question, but in this case I think 12+ is a bit too low. In a video game like Dead Space for instance, you go about shooting limbs off zombies - something which would obviously not lead to any limb shooting in real life as it is contained within the video game. However, as tame as the trailer for We Dare is, I think purely based on the interactive nature of the game that it wouldn't be something I'd want my 12-year-old kid playing with their mates due to the focus on playful and sexual content that is not actually contained within the game. That, however, is just my opinion which, to be quite honest, I don't have much to really back up.

So is 12+ too low? Or just about right? And for added discussion, could you see the nature of this game leading to anything risqué happening between kids or am I and the other's calling for a higher rating just being a little anal?

well, let's see, none of us have played it, so none of us can accurately judge. all we've seen is a stupid, stupid, incredibly stupid advert. the actual game content could be anywhere between E and AO (E=all ages rating in the US, Ao=Porn=banned). thus, at this point, anyone who isn't a dev or tester or ESRB employee who has worked on this game is engaging in total wankery by speculating.

*edit* ok, apparently some of the people commenting here have played it.

Just to see if anyone buys it for their kids. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
Also it amuses me so much I don't care what happens.

Well without actually having seen gameplay beyond that terrible commercial, it'd be impossible for me to say what the proper rating is. That said, it seems to me that this game is specifically geared towards sexually active adults so its only fair that the rating reflect that.

eh i think there should be a 15+ rating, just because, but honestly, it's a fucking game, at that it's a "lite" collection of mature games, so really it's nothing to squabble over, if your squabbling over that rating, then you clearly need to watch your children more closely because i have seen (and done so myself) much much worse at younger ages.

I don't think this is the kind of game you can supervise your kids with when all the action is geared toward spanking and the dreaded touching of lips. DAMN IT TO HEL-- ahem, I mean, the gameplay is not something you could really make your kids play in a correct fashion. I'd also be kind of worried why any adult would be watching kids playing this game at all, let alone playing it with them. Urgh, bad thoughts.

Nothing in it is explicitly bad, but I have a strange feeling it might switch from 12+ to 15+ due to outrage, and making it 12+ at the start may have been because of that, otherwise people would've complained and it would have had to switch from 15+ to 18+. This is just a guess.

I'd rate it F for fail.

Though really, the little tiny bit of content shown looks fairly tame, it's the retarded things the people were doing that was off.

yeah true, that's not what my point was getting at, yes the game has some very "lite" mature sexual functions, but if your squabbling over your kids getting it, then you really need to take a reality check because withOUT the game i see kids (and like i said, have done myself) much more and worse than that around that age, so the game's rating is not much of a matter to me, although i don't think it should really be in the hands of 6-7 year olds, as it would make near zero sense to them at the time and we don't need to pervert our youth that badly =]

Though the game is "tame" by the standards of visuals and gameplay mechanics (you dont have to put the controler in her ass and spank her im sure laying it down on a table and hitting it will work?) its intended reception, audience and overall feel of the game leans it towards a adult and or swingers party, who the hell at PEGI thought 12 year olds like to swing?.

And you've played the game, like that mass of people, have you?

If it's rated as a 12, then that's because there's nothing in there that's not appropriate for a 12-year-old. How its marketed is irrelevant, because that's not what they're rating.

If you look at the gameplay clips in the ad, it seems pretty clear that the only sexual undertones are coming from the advert itself. Two people try to eat an apple in one, and the other one they're flying.

Big fucking whoop. If they want to spank each other whilst they're tapping the remote then more power to them.

They rate it on who the content is appropriate for - the game isn't rated based on what age group might like it.

You'd think a bunch of gamers would know how age ratings work.

In the advertising it is (aimed at bunch of sexually active morons, yes) - looking at the short bits of gameplay, its bloody harmless.

I'm sure most of the stuff on the history channel is appropriate for anyone over the age of 7, doesn't mean any 7-year-olds want to fucking watch it, nor should the rating reflect that, because that's not what the rating is for.

Again:

You'd think a bunch of gamers would know how age ratings work.

Not because of any sexual or immoral content, but because it looks so stupid I fear standing near the case in a store may diminish a person's intelligence significantly.

Also, the overdubbed laughter in that commercial hurts my soul.
you phrase it so much better than i ever could. BEST ninja ever!

And like i posted in the other thread, wasn't 'project rub' a 3+ (on DS)? The game itself only features people flying and eating an apple, if somewhat in very silly positions. In project rub, i found myself doing a variety of tasks, some of which were hilarious and others much closer to erotic than this game.

Like some very intelligent woman said, its a nowaday attempt at spin the bottle. I didn't find any bottled drinks having age limit restrictions, so why should this?

This. Was going to say the same thing. I had to pause the video several times before I could watch it fully, and I didnt get to the end.

I cant remember but I think I started doing algebraic fractions just to see if my IQ was intact

Given that teenagers have obvious sexual undertone towards everything and anything, stamp whatever number you want there. Twelve'll do the trick.

Other than that, I can't really say as I've never really payed any attention to ratings, which seem to be somewhat of a fetish around here.

T for Teen, not that any real teens would be caught dead with a game as bad as this one...

Kids "discovering" (might not be the best word) their sexual side (again, this all sounds a little weird) is all good to me (really, out of context this is horrible) as long as it's a natural progression. Teenagers are going to be interested in sex, and that's fine. It's natural, as I said before. The focus on it in a video game, however, still strikes me as bit off. I just think kids should find all that stuff on their own, not through stroking a Wiimote with their face.

Well done, you've won the award of most hostile user of the month. Feel proud.

Relating to your point however, just as I did in the part of the post you snipped out, I agree that I don't have much to base this on. It's just a trailer for a cheesy piece of shovelware. What I'm getting at however is that I wouldn't want my kids playing the game in that fashion (not that I have any), which they would be allowed to do by purchasing the game legally. Whether the rating will change or not is not my point, it's more my opinion on whether or not the content we've been shown deserves a higher rating.

If Thomas the Tank Engine was marketed as some sort of high class porno (bear with me here), but the actual show obviously didn't contain any of that, would you then expect the show itself to be rated for adults only?

That begs the question why anyone would market it that way in the first place if not to pull in the porn-loving crowd.
