Just wondering if anyone knows what this all solid black arm tattoo is called and if its recommendable for a first tattoo or at all. Tattoo in question: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2173/2131235368_4703dcb56e.jpg

Preferably looking for people with some kind of knowledge of tattoos to answer but to each his own, Thanks.

They're called "sleeves", and I wouldn't recommend them at all because they're extremely noticeable, and people will assume you're some sort of criminal. It'll be hard to look respectable with those.

Yeah sleeves are pretty trashy, so isn't the "friendship" tattoo on his neck. Also remember there are several places that won't hire you if you have exposed tattoos, so consider that.

The best kind of tattoo you can get is one the represents you personally and speaks of your personality or interests, try and be original with something your preeminently putting on your body rather than clichƩ.

Never gotten a tattoo but were you planning on getting it all black like that? If so that isn't very original. At least get something more interesting and personal.

Solid black sleeves? Wouldn't recommend it at all and certainly not as a first tatt.

First off because that's a lot of fill work to be doing on a cleanskin (person without tatts), so they got no idea if they can hack it or not... It's also a fair chunk of time out of the tatt artists day and they'll charge you for that time whether the work is getting done or your passed out in the chair.

Second, big solid colour fills require touch up work more often because the colour going blotchy is more noticable.

Third, and this is just personal opinion, those solid black sleeves look like shit - makes it look like you needed extensive coverup work done and couldn't think of anything.

Don't get it. I'm not at all opposed to the idea of tattoos, although I don't have one myself, but that's just a long-sleeved shirt that you can't take off.

Yeah, they're called sleeves like other people have said. I wouldn't recommend them, they aren't very personal and it seems like they would be the type of tattoo that would wear thin with you pretty fast. And unlike a body tattoo they would be almost impossible to cover up. I would suggest something that means a lot to you so you won't get sick of it, or else make it small and inoffensive.

I wouldn't personally go for them, they look unoriginal and not personal at-all. I'd recommend going for something personal to you that's small and can easily be covered up for work.

My recommendation on tats is to get a single tat first, of reasonable size, in a location you can cover or not as needed. Pick something you like that has personal meaning.

Once you have it and have gotten used to it, go from there.

That is not advisable. It will ruin your employment prospects, will cost you and arm and a leg [or two arms, ho ho] and it looks like a half-assed version of blackface.

Don't get a tattoo that means something to you, because your outlook on matters will most likely change while the tattoo will remain remain the same.

Get something on purely aesthetic grounds, devoid of any meaning or symbolism. I have a square near my elbow, simply because I think squares look nice. Doesn't represent anything.

Only one guy I've seen has made filled black sleeves look good...

They go down his whole back too. He's Tim Commerford of Rage Against The Machine by the way...

And since he has the lifestyle to back it up, it doesn't look utterly retarded on him.
