I came across an old 'Extra Punctuation' article on people who completed Pokémon 100%, and it got me to wondering;

'Gee, what is a normal/adequate play through of an average game?'.

This does obviously exclude MMOs, most fighting games, and probably a few other types, but for the majority of story/achievement based games, how far should you go till you've got your money's worth?

I vote option 4, but I'm sure there are those among you who believe more or less is appropriate, to see what 4= reveal the spoiler below :).

When I saw someone else do this, at first I thought 'you bastard' then I thought 'well, I did read the OP as a result' (although I usually do anyway) so I too did my latest poll this way.

1= 100%
2= 99-90%
3= 89-80%
4= 79-60%
5= 59-40%
6= 39-10%
7= Less than 10%
8= Just the story once/twice

Until you stop having fun.

Be it 10% or 100% twice.

EDIT: For a game that's heavily story based, you get you're money's worth once you've finished the main story, and had fun with it.

You should atleast try every mode. I am currently playing alot of MW2 online, and the nosey person I am, I often check out people's profiles. Know how many 10th Prestiges have 0 Gamerscore? Just do one Spec Op mission or the first story mission and bam, achievements. To play online for that long and not even TRY story once!? Its...beyond me.

I often shoot for 90% to 100% but I'd say average is anywhere between 60% and 85%.

That does seem crazy, I know some people who just about do that however.

The reasonable percentage varies from game to game and person to person. I can't name them off the top of my head but there are quite a few games in my library where completing the main story only unlocks a fraction of the completion meter. Though it's as Rabish Bini said; the reasonable completion percentage is the point at which you stop having fun and you're only playing because you want that 100%. The game is no long a game at that point; it's become checklist of chores for you to finish.

If someone genuinely has fun getting 100% of the achievements or w/e the game is using to measure completion then their reasonable percentage is 100%

Your poll also doesn't make much sense, it only goes up to 8; which I'm guessing means 80% completion. What happened to 90 and 100% completion?

Achievement completion percentage is way inaccurate as far as I'm concerned, unless you really think people are missing out in Grand Theft Auto IV by choosing not to hunt every pigeon in the city. So you can toss that definition of completion in the garbage.

All that matters to me is getting the story done and then whatever else I find fun. If I like a game, I'll likely play it again. I'll probably even play it even more after that (I'm currently starting playthrough #13 of Mass Effect). I definitely get my money's worth out of games.

Until you stop having fun for more than 5-10 minutes (depends on the game). If I get stuck somewhere because of a Mt Everest difficulty curve, or because the game descends into grinding -- or if the story/setting becomes intolerable, why should I continue to torture myself?

I won't quit at the first point it starts sucking, but if it doesn't improve in 5-10 minutes (the next scene) or proves impassable because of difficulty, forget it.

If I like a game, I will complete it as close to 100% as possible until it gets into grinding territory. Achievements/trophies? Nah, unless they also give in-game benefits.

A mediocre game? I'd just beat the story and the side quests I find interesting and let the game calculate how far that is, whether it be 40-80%

Apparently you have never heard of Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2 or Halo 1-4.
Yes. I never heard of the game I JUST SAID I WAS PLAYING and was the "inspiration" for my post.
And just because people do it alot does not mean we should just accept that. Yes I am aware most CoD players are horrible people. As I play with them often right now, I have first hand knowledge. I buy a game, I play all of it. I hate Zombie mode in Black Ops, but I played it a few times before I stopped. It is just a waste of money to completly ignore a big part of the game.

Depends on the game. If it's Just Cause 2...80% will be more than enough. Assassin's Creed? Complete the story, forego the flags. Little Big Planet, Flower, Flow, games like that? As much as you'd like, or until you feel the need to burn something down. Pokemon? Get as many Pokemon as you'd like, a few legendaries, and beat whoever's at the top, and bam. Dragon Age? Until you have no more quests in your journal.

My general rule of thumb is I'll do the reasonable collection quests. 100 pieces, with a Seer type character, where you can be informed of where they are, a la Paper Mario or Zelda? Those I'll do. Hunting feathers and flags in AC 1 and 2? Nope. I'll play until it stops being fun, though, is my usual practice.

Oh, and scripted, linear sequences where you have only a millisecond to react during specific stretches and have to shift planes continuously are the ones I'm least inclined to collect.

I didn't vote, because my opinion is not represented. I think the most reasonable point to stop playing a game is when you're no longer having fun, regardless of your percent completed.

Incidentally I tend to go for 100% as long as the game is fun to me.

I play the game for as long as it entertains me, % complete or achievements be damned. Seeing as games are short and easy these days and don't have a lot of replay value outside of multiplayer, that leaves me with overall low gamerscore. Around 50% achievements you often get from a single playthrough, that's me. Games that lets you, or encourages you, to eff around though, like Saints Row (2) or Dead Rising (2) or have a solid co-op (RE5/Halo series) nets me much higher numbers.

Totally dpends on the game. I won't get to 100% if I don't enjoy the game - since I'm careful what I buy and I'm willing to give things a chance, I'll usually 'finish' the story or whatever - for whatever percentage that gives. If I like the game, I might go back and try to clean things up/get the achievements etc.

I don't think I've ever 100%-ed a game before though - some of the achievements I'm just not that interested in grinding out.

I can't really vote here because some games I enjoy enough for a 100% completion, some games anger me to the point I want to get 100% completion just to laugh at it and tell it I kicked it's ass, some games I really don't care about 100% and enjoy it for what it is story and character wise.

Just depends on the game. Completionism is not universal to me.

It depends really. usually, it's just the story, but in RPGs I can't miss any sidequests, as that feels like I miss out on content of the game. And the rewards usually make the story quests easier.

But stupid "search for 100 items" challenges in Sandboxgames I can do without.
