I've just recently Read the full thread on the Anti-Obama posters and a lot of it mentions Obama being a Socialist and Obama not being a Socialist and what not. Now my question isn't really Obama related I just want to know what's so bad about Socialism in General?.

Edit: Okay from looking at peoples reactions it seems I may a phrased this wrong, I'm not talking about the purest of socialism, I'm more talking about what we have in the UK and most of Europe (I also believe Canada as it but I won't speak for Canadians incase I upset some one although I'd be grateful if some one would confirm this).

Also an Edit: This hasn't been a big issue at the moment with the posts but I imagine others may look and post on this later on and I just want to make it clear that this thread isn't about saying Capitalism or Communism sucks or about comparing Capitalism or Communism for socialism. You may do this of your own free will(Compare and such) but please remember that this isn't what the thread is about and try and not start and flame wars over "Mines the best" "No mines the best please".

I guess socialism can work in some occasions I guess but people are against it because it leads to communism and people overreact to it.

Pure socialism is a bad thing, but so is pure capitalism.
A perfect country would have a mix of the two.

I really don't know.

(And for the record, that thread just failed. All I asked was 2 simple questions and it went lose. First and last time I ever do a political thread.)

Because people associate "Socialism" with "Giving away all their money via tax dollars to prison cells and people on welfare who do shit-all"

In other words, people want to protect their hard-earned Benjamins and I can't say I blame them. Obviously there should be things like a minimum wage and whatnot that makes sure every working person gets an honest day's pay for an honest day's work, but the problem is people don't want to contribute too much of their own hard-earned money to help people they don't even know and probably never see.

People are always going to ***** about everything. Yes, socialism is bad if you have too much of it. Still, I think we should reïnstate slavery to convicts because it's a good thing, if you keep an eye on them that is, but is any one asking for that?

Here we go again. Whats on the Escapist flame thread docket this week?

Socialism!!!

Thats right Pat. Last week was atheism and theology. A whole week without a socialism thread just begs for a reboot. The problem is, one thread leads to another, and to another, and before you can say hey, hey, hey, you've got economic threads up the ass!

OT: Socialism in its purity requires altruism. Which is a pipe dream. Its like asking a dog to live its life bipedal. It works for a few seconds, but then bam back to four legs. Its a bad idea because the four legged dogs take advantage of the bipedal dogs whenever and where ever possible. You need a little bit of capitalism to keep people aspiring. People are just worried Obama is going to make us too socialist.

There's no incentive to excel in a socialist nation. Not only that, you still have a "have or have-not" structure to society, only more severe. In addition, why would anyone be a proponent of a society in which everything is handed to you, but nothing really works?

I think your missing the point, my thread has nothing to do with Obama except that a thread that combined Obama with socialism sparked the idea in my head to ask why Socialism is a bad thing.

socialism doesn't work because if you make a plan for everybody to fulfill, and base your whole economy on that, then if one person decides to step out of line the whole thing collapses like a house of cards made from glass cows. People strive for power of their own, either politically, financially, you name it, and that will always clash with the system of "uniting" the citizens of a state, country, or continent, because, honestly, do you want to do the same darn chores your no-good anti-social neighbor (imagine you have one) is planned out to do?

I like the concept of communism, tbh. If the plans are customized to fulfill everyone's potential, of course. And the cost of that, coupled with the aforementioned reasons, makes the system utterly difficult, if not impossible to work.
