Ok i just finished Dragon Age II and I really liked it. But I was in two minds about buying it after reading the mass of reviews saying how horrible it was. I thought the combat was much quicker, smoother and just much nicer than DAO and I loved the story. However I did find the last two acts disappointingly short and the ending was rather rushed.

But anywho, enough from me, what did you guys think about it?

I'm on Act 3 now myself, and so far I have been enjoying it rather much. Only thing I could see why anyone would say that the game is bad is because of reused maps, but it honestly doesn't bother me.

I really enjoyed DA2 but I thought the only improvements made over Origins were the graphics and the combat, the story, environments, characters, all seemed to lack in comparison...

It was alright, but had some serious issues.

Those issues being re-used environments, lack of mod-support, weak narrative(I like how they're breaking off from their usual formula, but they definitely need to work on it more), and I didn't like how the game told you what items are for what companions. I enjoyed having to learn about my companions, in order to figure out what they liked.

I agree, I heard lots of moaning about that as well but I just found it mildly irritating, not really a problem

I enjoyed it.

I had no problem with the gameplay. I can sort of see where all the criticism and hate was coming from in that regard, but I think people overreacted.

The narrative was a bit of a mess though. Not terrible, but could definitely have been better. I can see what they were trying to do, and I approve, but they didn't quite pull it off. In particular, there was a distinct lack of overarching plot thread.

The recycled dungeons got a bit ridiculous. Although, to be fair, DA:O had a bit of that as well.

The characters were good. I loved Avaline, Varric and Merrill. Especially Merrill.

I thought it was enjoyable, but not as much as Origins. I feel like with combat they took one stop forward, and two steps back. While they did make it more fun and fast paced, they ruined it by sending endless waves of almost identical enemies at you, with little to no variations in attacks, except for the rare mage or assassin enemies. Also, the high dragon boss in Act 3 was probably one of the most tedious, boring bosses in any game I've ever played. The half dozen dungeon designs that were used over and over again did not help.

I like half of the main cast. I liked Varric (He's awesome), Isabella (Yeah, I know that she is really annoying with her humor sometimes, but at least she isn't so serious all the time), and Merrill. Fenris was too broody for me, and they completely killed Anders for me in this game. Aveline is okay, but there's no reason for her to be helping Hawke after getting to Kirkwall because Hawke constantly is involved with criminals. Bethany was completely unremarkable, and the only thing remarkable about Carver is how much I wanted to murder his ass by the end of the game. As for Sebastian.. fuck that guy. Seriously, the DLC for him was a joke.

Story was unique, but not very well executed. I thought with Kirkwall being the only major location, it would change over time, depending on your choices, but nope. Very little changes over the game.

Act 3 is where the game crashes for me. Nothing you do has any effect on what happens in it.

I enjoyed myself while playing the game, which is what I look for the most in a game. The story was fine in my opinion, was interesting enough to keep me going in the game. The ending with the templars and mages was the most annoying part since I sided with the mages. I have not finished my playthrough where I side with the templars, but I feel like it won't be that different.

Also I did enjoy the fact that we had a different main character, I am kind of hoping that there is a different character in the next game, and we go into a different region, I'm assuming as well.

It was good, but I got tired of being in one city almost the entire game, as well as seeing the same 2 or 3 dungeons over and over and over.

I liked the game.
I "still" have a personal issue with the Char-Creation editor locking me out from creating a pretty character. I mean, for fucks sake, what about some simple but stylish long hairsyles? Same applies to mass-effect, really...

Mentioning Mass Effect and Dragon Age 2... did someone else noticed that the "orderign a drink" sequence in the hanged man is exactly the same row of animations like shepard has?

Pretty much this. Wave spawning, a disjointed narrative, and reused maps made the game a "meh" for me. It did net me New Vegas at my local game shop, though. That's something.

I really enjoy the gameplay, characters and even the story to an extent, but it really just feels like a cash-in to me. It seems to only exist to set up for another game.

I agree with your assesment, the reuse of maps didn't bother me so much as it seems to have other people. My only complaint is that it was significantly shorter than Origins, and ended rather to quickly for me.

Whats so wrong with Dragon Age II?

Basically, it wasn't just a DA:O expansion pack.

Not that I believe that to be the case, but outside of a few obvious issues that everyone has (re-used maps, too many randomly spawning enemies, etc.) that's just about all the haters complaints boil down to.

I enjoyed it, but found it to be quite poorly made. Characters regularly ignoring you being a mage. Discussion wheel extremely unclear. Lots of little things like that adding up.

Edit: I also didn't appreciate certain decisions which were railroaded.

I personally loved it [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.276414-JK-Reviews-Dragon-Age-II]

Much more so than the original and found it to be far superior.
The only problems I had with it were the overused maps and layout but other than that, it was great.

Rush job, and the truly disturbing part is people prefer it, now let's have a wild guess what the next one will be like...
