Here are the magical archetypes used in fantasy works. What do you think is the coolest, and why?

If the coolest isn't the one you would choose, explain why and which you would study if you could.

Time manipulation is one of the best things, IMO.
To be honest, the first thing I thought when I looked at that poll was "oh look, World Of Warcraft references!" because pretty much everything there is completely relevant to the various classes/talent trees:
Which isn't a bad thing because WoW's universe is incredibly well fleshed-out. Your Temporal/Time magic would fall under Arcane, just everything related to spacetime-manipulation (portals, teleporting, etc).

Obviously, the best magic of them all is the one that you forgot to include in the poll: FRIENDSHIP!

Well-written magic that isn't just plot driving bullshit.

But probably Arcane magic, since it implies understanding of the fundamental mechanics of the universe.
I'll also chime in with Temporal magic as mentioned above as a second.

I'd say Necromancy. Anything involving shadow, darkness, death (or undeath, rather), demons, the underworld. That sort of thing is all very, very cool as far as magic/sorcery is concerned. My favourite game, Gothic II, taught me the awesomness that is dark magic.

Why isn't lightning/electric magic on the poll? Chain lightning is so absolutely broken in everything that has it.

Look at this shit, it just destroys EVERYONE:

Out of the ones listed, probably arcane or necromancy. Arcane wins out over necromancy though, because summoning the undead probably involves dealing with a lot of rotting flesh.

Gotta say nature is my favorite, followed by arcane. Nature magic is wonderful because it would give you control over the raw materials for anything you wanted and needed, plus the allegience of animals whenever you needed them. Nature magic is one magic that others really have no fair comparison to, and no real control over.

Arcane magic would be good if you were seeking ultimate knowledge or if you were trying to discover a way to understand and defeat an otherwise undefeatable foe. Arcane would be the most useful if you needed to ever manipulate the very laws of physics and time, whereas nature magic would be best if you're entirely earthbound and in the present with no need or desire to mess with the deeper workings of the universe. Arcane is probably more powerful than nature, but I would definitely choose nature since I'm a bit of a hippie type girl and I know that I would want safety in and control over the natural world.

I am going to 2nd lightning magic. I have always imagined myself becoming some kind of super lightning powered hero, and it has so many applications! In every game I play I will always make a lightning magic character if it is available.

Way better than fire since lightning can create fires!

Also the WoW way of structuring magic was BS. Like how lightning was under "nature", but cold and fire got their own trees, like, what the heck, mages should have had access to lightning.

I support Lightning becoming a choice as it is really just electron manipulation
which can be by controlling charges and electrons.
Water as it is polar,
Also controlling acids and bases
Fire as it is just combustion which is forming of new electron bonds.
Earth as you know the fun part of moving electric fields you get magnetic fields as well,
which can also give us a rail gun!!! (so you have a ball of fire i have a small object flying at you at an absurd velocity and i have fire as well)
and chainsaws or just swords of iron.
Almost complete control of computers and other tech.
Which can also be extended to controlling living/dead bodies as you control there nerves tissues.
and who needs regular gases when you have plasma!
You could probably fix wounds or just make it worst.

As you can see anything more op the lightning magic is just going to be powers of gods or just invulnerable and immortal
So screw that poll from wow
As the true lightning mages just know we control just about everything

so we win life and most other things

I think I should pick mine since I started this thread...

I am seriously drawn towards necromancy, but IRL I would pick arcane magic, because magic is awesome enough without having to risk your life, soul, and sanity for a bit more power. Plus, I'm pretty freaking nice in real life, I feel really bad when I open the food bag in the car and realize I took someone else's order, so I don't think I'd be a very good necromancer.

But seriously, just raising skeletons alone is freaking awesome. Not even zombies, just skeletons, no flesh or traces of humanity about them. The flavor of the dark arts is just scrumptious, which makes me sad at how few times games have TRUE necromancers. I've only played a real necromancer in Diablo 2. Diablo 3 only had the Witch Doctor. World of Warcraft had playable undead but they could only be Warlocks (which, if you know the lore, Undead would be least likely to be). Skyrim did have conjuring, but IMHO, the magic component was just sad in that game. Game designers need to get on this. Just let me raise a skeleton, people!

As for the lightning debate, there were only 8 slots in the poll. Apart from casting lightning, there's not much else in the category of lightning magic, so I don't think it deserves its own slot anyway. Perhaps it fits into arcane.

If magic existed, I'd be the bearded wizard leafing through tomes at the top of his private tower, who, when prompted, gives you amazing advice and words of wisdom.

Granted I don't have an arsenal of every weapon ever but it'd still be cool to have.

Lightning manipulation has the same amount of uses as fire, if not more.

Fire and ice (and lightning) should all just be grouped under Elemental magic, it'll save having to have 20 different choices just to please everyone and it means no one's favorite element is left out.

Getting back on topic, out of those choices I'd go with necromancy.

Necromancy for the shizzles! Seriously, Necromancy's got the baddest of rap sheets. Think about it? What better way to investigate a murder scene than with necromancy? Heck, it can be used to study how a body died, the way diseases work on the flesh/organs, so much could be done for the good with necromancy. But noooo. People cry for the nearest priesthood/paladin training ground to kill the necromancer. Bah.

from the list i woudl chose arcane, lets just hope illusions extend to behaviuos modifications.

I've always been a fan of Earth magic, I know it's not as common as the other ones probably because it's rather hard to execute in a video game but something about being able to manipulate the environment just appeals to, shaking the earth, making pits, raising mountains, catapulting my enemies or simply making myself a tall tower to shoot arrows from is what I like, it's not the coolest, the flashiest or even the most useful but it's the kind of magic I'd like.

Got to go with necromancy, I can't think of anything cooler than raising up skeletons to be my own personal army.
