So I've been revisiting Fallout 2 while afflicted with various illnesses, and I've got to thinking about the Fallout series, and how different a lot of the games were. Fallout 3 is rather infamous for alienating a lot of fans of the series with certain decisions made in it in regards to lore and writing, but I don't think it's entirely fair to to call that game out as the black sheep of the series when each Fallout game has it's own identity. Fallout 1 feels much more like a traditional post-apocalyptic setting, lacking a lot of the things that would come to make Fallout what it is, for example. A result of these differences, I think it's fair to say that each game in the series is going to be some people's favorite (except for Brotherhood of Steel because Fuck You), and I was curious to hear what you all thought was your favorite game in the series.
For me, it's gotta be New Vegas. It feels like an evolution of all the things that worked from Falout 2, while excising a lot of the stuff that irritated about that game (ludicrous difficulty, tedious combat, pop-culture references), while at the same time maintaining an identity of it's very own. It's got a great main story in the base game, utilizing a faction dynamic better than any other game I've played, and some of the best examples of DLC I've seen in any game, with the genius idea of having a metaplot run through each one.
