Although I haven't cared for the last couple of iterations (SF4 and SF5), I'm a Street Fighter person at heart. I've enjoyed many of the others over the years, but SF remains my favourite series, with Alpha 2 and 3rd Strike being my favourite games.

For me it was a very hard choice between Tekken and Soul Caliber

I Have logged dozens if not hundreds of hours in both (and still suck)

But due to both childhood love as I started on my Gray blocky PS1 and modern Enjoyment with my girlfriend my vote had to go with Tekken

arcana heart as well(good to see it has fans on this forum). followed by nitroplus blasterz/blazblue

this list need more non mainstream fighters. or atleast blazblue/guilty gear should be there since all fighting game fans know about it even if they don't like it.
There's only six slots available when creating a poll. I just had to go with the most well known ones, and Guilty Gear since it's doing well right now.

The bedroom.

No, seriously now, Soul Calibur. Only one I've ever gotten somewhat decent in. I'm terrible at all other fighting games.

I have exceptionally fond memories of Bloody Roar on the gamecube (outside of Shen Long's broken-ass supercombo loop), and the first BlazBlue game.

Both were easy enough to grasp that I could do well without dedicating tons of hours mastering it, but deep enough that there was a lot to dig into.

Mortal Kombat

I had this really weird phase as a teenager where I felt like I wanted to be violent, not towards real people or even animals, I had absolutely zero desire to harm anything in real life but I had this weird bloodlust for fiction and Mortal Kombat completely satisfied that.

I'll freely admit I'm a filthy casual, I have no desire to become truly great at it or any fighting game. I know some fighting jargon, can properly block and got some combos under my belt but nothing that'll get me close to tournament level and you know, that's fine by me.

Just got Killer Instinct on Games for Gold on Xbox One and it seems pretty cool, problem is using the stick is terrible for movement and the D-Pad is terrible for special moves so I'm thinking of investing in a cheap fight stick.
Hey, I'm broadening my horizons now, that seems good.

hate for liking any game is stupid

DOA would be my favorite too, if you only count 3d fighting games. Most of the badmouthing seems to be from tekken fanboys, who never tried it. my theory is because Tekken was the 1st popular 3d fighter on playstation(most popular console for last couple of generations), like SF is the 1st popular 2d fighter. so even though you can say things like kof, darkstalkers, airdashers, etc are better(subjective opinions) sf retain most popularity, and you get some fanboys/fangirls who won't try others.
i tend to like most things from arc system and examu most. so I'm more of a 2d air dasher player. I've got my tastes but dont mind trying different things.

I came to this conclusion over a decade ago and I am quite saddened that in that rather long amount of time I've yet to find one single fighting game that I enjoy to the level that I enjoy these 2, which for me are just Fighting Game perfection, though admittedly I'm not much of a Fighting Game person, but anyway.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves.
For me, this Fatal Fury spin-off just works better than any King of Fighters or mainline Fatal Fury game, the controls are simple and elegant much like any SNK fighting game of that time, but they are super responsive and every hit feels just right, aesthetically it's beautiful and the use of the T.O.P. system contributes quite well to psychological games during fights, not to mention that if left for last bit of health it can give you quite a comeback, in any case just a fantastic game.

The Last Blade 2
Another beautiful and stylish game from SNK, though this one is about Samurai at least for the most part, in any case disregarding the beautiful sprite work, interesting story and stunning attention to detail, the game is still good, again very simple controls with only 3 attack buttons and a dedicated parry button it just works, it's simple responsive and elegant but at the same time has a lot of depth and you always have a ton of options for what you can do, not to mention that the parry system can make for quite interesting mind games, after all, if you guess the enemy's movement you leave them quite open to the attack, and much like garou[footnote]Which I failed to mention this part.[/footnote] it has a very varied and well-balanced Roster and all the characters have so much personality that it makes you wonder what the rest of their story is, and of course it has Amano, who is awesome.

Other-Blazblue

It's the game that got me to become competitive at fighters, will always be my fav. I also love Guilty Gear, Arcana heart, Nitroplus Blasterz, Under Night in Birth, Dengeki Bunkou and Persona 4 Arena as well.

Fate Unlimited Codes is prolly my fav 3d fighter but it mostly plays like a 2D fighter with sidesteps, think tekken 3 but with actual special cancels and stuff. DOA is pretty great too though, lots of cool moves and chars.

Reminds me of KOF maximum impact. plays mostly like 2d, but theres sidesteps, and punch punch, kick, kick, etc combos

Soul Calibur 2, followed by the last 2 Mortal Kombats. Still need to try those movie characters they added actually. Maybe that'll change the opinion. Never cared for the others, not through lack of trying.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the Sega Dreamcast remains my favourite fighter ever, though I hated the Xbox 360 Arcade release which made the middle attack distance sensitive rather than letting you have it on a button. That nerfed my fighting style so much.

Man, that's a hard one. I'd probably have to go with Street Fighter Alpha 2. Not because it's the best of the series, but because it was the one that I was most into back in the day. Nowadays, I have little enough time (and too many games) to ever get into one game that much.

...But if we look at team fighters, too, man do I love me some Capcom Vs SNK 2 and X-Men Vs Street Fighter. I still play those on a semi-regular basis. I just wish that the PSN version had better controller support in CVS2 (and that modern ports of XVSF existed).

King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 (KoF 2006 in the states).

As far as I'm concerned it's the penultimate "so bad that it's good" of fighting games and I'm still salty as all hell that the sequel got cancelled.
