Me and a friend play in several orchestras, and we are constantly slagging off each other's instruments, he being a flautist, and I a trumpeter. As I was reflecting over these I figured I'd ask the Escapist's opinion.

So, what's your favourite Orchestral Instrument, and why?

On an unrelated note, is or is not the Viola a terrible instrument?

Trumpet, it's a very versatile instrument, with a loud, clear voice. I love it

The cello, by far. It's just so, I don't know, relaxing and powerful at the same time. You can make anything amazing by adding a bit of cello sounds here and there.

Violin for me. I play a bit, but mainly just because I adore the noise they make, especially Electric Violins. Completely revived Violins for me after I abandoned them Three Years ago.

Cello ^^

And yes, the Viola is a shitteh rip-off of the Violin. :/
Good to have someone who agrees with me.

For chords they're ok, but as a solo...

*Shudder*

It's like someone didn't have enough wood for a Cello, and too much for a Violin, so, after a 'waste not want not' fashion, the Viola was born.

The cello, with its human-voice range and such rich timbre and range of expression. An instrument you can feel the music flowing through you, and play so very mournfully. A single cello can fill a hall with emotion.

Oooh. Bach would be pissed.

OT: I play trombone, so I guess I'll say that since I don't care that much for playing orchestral music. I enjoy the sounds of all instruments executed properly, but whatever. Without the low brass, there is no punch to the sound.

Violin... I'm a little biased, though. It's the only instrument I've ever learned to play.
I love telling my mom that this song was written by a metal band. Blows her mind every time.

Clarinet, naturally.

We rock the wood sound like you wouldn't believe.

I'm required by the code of woodwind solidarity to take his side. This is further exacerbated by you being a trumpeter, and therefore competition.

...punk.

Oh look at you and your fancy mellow-ness.

*Narrows eyes*

It's amusing, because in an orchestra I play in I sit behind the clarinets, and I've given at least two of them headaches on several occasions (Not by playing especially loudly on purpose, but because I have some especially loud solos (March to the Scaffold springs to mind)

So say the guy with the instrument so lazy it uses eight fingerings to play fifty billion notes!

Never had to worry about that in my band (we had the saxophones behind us). The flutes had to deal with it, though.

Heh. Ever get mutes as gag gifts?

French Horn fanfares, especially in John Williams' music, always sound epic and powerful.
