Here's what started this poll:

Growing up, I never played Final Fantasy... ever. However, my friends have discussions/arguments/slap-fights over the Final Fantasy series on a weekly basis. Each one favors a different FF title from the 1990's.

Yesterday, I asked them: When was the last time you played your favorite Final Fantasy?

These were their answers (ordered in the series's succession):
VI- 14 years ago
VII- 11 years ago
VIII - 8 years ago

Each one claims that their favorite Final Fantasy is their favorite video game of all time. We're in our mid-20s now, so I asked them to go back and play their old favorites again, just to see how they stack up to recent games we've played.

I'm expecting they remember these games being better than they are in actuality. Especially since they tend to be more critical of recent games we play (such as Mass Effect, Modern Warfare 2, The Force Unleashed).

It was about four years ago when I last played VI. And... eight for Tactics.
Goddamn. I'm getting old.

You're probably right. Nostalgia is a sweet sweet seasoning. But also, there's the element of people changing over the course of 5-15 years. To me, the prospect of playing a JRPG doesn't interest me like it used to. Because I don't have the time to dedicate to it.

I played VII just last year. And I was just as enthralled as when I was 11 years old and started playing.

Jesus god I'm getting old.

I haven't played 6 or 9 in almost 5 years, mostly because I don't own a playstation anymore or a SNES.

Mine are VII and VI: these classics do not age. Just as Casablanca is still as good a movie as it was in the 40s, Final Fantasy games are classics and masterpieces regardless of time.

I think this is mainly because turn-based systems are not as susceptible to aging as other game types. For instance, it's hard to go back and play Goldeneye or Perfect Dark on the N64 because we've evolved into dual-stick shooter control now. Menu-based turn-based battle systems do not have such problems. So unless you care about graphics way too much, older Final Fantasy games are still amazing.

I played my favourite Final Fantasy within the last year or so and recently downloaded it off PSN. After I finish a couple of games that I'm currently playing I'll probably load it up again and have another playthrough of it.

And to answer your question, yes I still like it. Blame nostalgia if you want, but I love it just as much now as I did back when I first played it. Of course, I'm one of those freaky mutants that most people shun because:

This one is my favourite

I didn't play Final fantasy. Somehow I convinced myself it was not for me. A tradition I still adhere to today.

You know, I don't want to contribute to FF7 hate, but I want to ask something honestly:

For those who say it has aged well, what is it that makes you feel that way? Personally, I couldn't get myself to play through even the introduction less than two years after playing it through the first time. I really thought it aged badly. (And there was a time I quite enjoyed it.)

IX: somewhere between 5-8 years ago
X: a little over a year ago
Tactics: see IX

I'm going to correct this in a few weeks (I found my PS3 slim plays PS1 games, and my bro found IX for me. If the discs don't work, it's coming to the PSN soon).

However, since it was overshadowed by 7 and I played it around the same time as the other FF's, I played Legend of the Dragoon sometime last year.

Actually, I found that the beginning is just fine. It's getting farther from it that's the problem. As for it's aging, I find it funny how people hate on IX for "Cartoony characters" when VII has even worse (the original had chibis as the field/world map avatars).
