So the time has come for me to select a project of my own to study for my dissertation.

However, I want to know which direction you guys think research into video games needs to go.

We know there is an abundance of literature on the effects of aggression, so lets strike that one off. Also, the improvements in hand-eye co-ordination that video games offer and treating PTSD with Tetris has already been established.

As a large community of fairly educated monkeys and gamers, I would love to hear what you guys think on where the current research needs to be focussed. All ideas are welcome :)

For as many studies as there are about the negative consequences of playing video games,
I'd like to see a few on the good aspects. My brother crushed his left hand, his doctor prescribed video games as physical therapy, I learned how to read playing JRPGs, how many people have went off to learn more about history after playing through a video game version of it?

That is exactly the stuff I was thinking about. I don't want to contribute to an already negative public view of video games.

Those examples of you and your brother are certainly in the realm of something I'd like to study, and I've heard of similar stories "of friends of friends" who have over came dyslexia from having to read in video games. I'm sure there are more examples of this sort of thing too.

That's actually my case also.
