It seems that every few topics, the role of female characters in video games comes up. Well Bayonetta provides us with a potentially iconic new female character in the protagonist role. Everything about the game Bayonetta is excessive - the sexuality, the violence, the story - so how does this reflect on the characterisation of Bayonetta? Does she represent any real development in the sexual politics for games? Or is she just another big-titted ***** in the Lara Croft mold?

Well... let me think, what goes through my head on the average 5 minutes...

Girls, sex, kicking some douches ass, girls, tits, ass, more ass, more ass, tits again, sex.

Too me that makes Bayonetta a bitchin game.

TBH she's not that hot. She's got ugly 1950's ten foot tall hair and wears glasses. And she's lacking a little in the chest area compared to other sexier females.

She's just what the developers find sexy in a woman and made her fight angels while her clothes transform into a bikini from time to time.

Why is there such an uproar about this bullshit?

I said "none of the above".

Simply put I don't think this game has a message in that department to be honest. Not sure when (or even honestly "if") I'll pick up my own copy, but from what I've seen I think people have REALLY been reading into this game and trying to make it out to be more profound than it was intended to be. I don't see Bayonetta as an "objectified woman" created soley for male amusement, since she's no worse than a lot of the Mary Sue characters women create for themselves in all generes. I don't know how many girls will admit it in forums and such, but I'm pretty sure she's going to have a lot of lady fans. On some levels she hits that whole "paranormal romance" vibe, and while she's a lot more martial given that it's an action game she kind of fits into the whole mould from Kim Harrison novels and Anita Blake stories. Too gorgeous to be believed witch woman, fighting between heaven and hell... check out the back of Paranormal Romance novels in your bookstores, you'll probably have no problem finding a ton of stuff that's very similar. Heck I seem to remember glancing over a series featuring a character called "Dante Valentine" with books titled things like "Working For The Devil" and so on. The whole cover art and everything basically seemed like someone was trying to write a Devil May Cry inspired character a lot like Bayonetta on a basic level.

She's empowering enough for a level-headed female to derive some amusement from her, and blatantly a sex object for the people who are into that sort of thing.

Really, she's a happy medium when in context of a game you'd have to be crazy to take seriously.

[small]And the rocket launcher stilettos are[/small] Kickass!

Because too many people out there have to ***** about something. And if it is something that might be enjoyable to someone else, then let's ***** some more...

If you don't like the character they created with Bayonetta, don't play the game... end of story. Doesn't matter how you see the character, but you can STFU about it and quit trying to spoil good things for other people. Personally, I love the game, best game in the genra IMHO.

It stands at the direct centre of a circle labelled "Awesome".

She herself stands as a parody. Her entire character is a satire of how women are objectivised in videogames and the media, and she not only epitomises that, but does it knowingly so.

The main character of the game has a gun attached to each limb and kills giant three-headed angels for reasons that are poorly explained, if they're explained at all, and people still take it seriously.

Come on, now. Isn't this a little like trying to analyze whether or not Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is racist, or examining the psychological implications of Jackass Number 2?
