Pretty much what the title says.

Im going to have to go with the Air Force, it has been proven time and time again that you cannot win a war without Air Superiority.

Yes I know you need Air, Land and Sea units, but which one matters the most in modern war?

I feel Air Force is pretty much the strongest. Sea is... Um, I don't know, what happens if you're invading a landlocked country? :p
Plus, if the going gets tough, you just send a plane to carpet bomb shit, or even drop an A-bomb.

For us who are not down with the military lingo, what's the difference between Marine Corps and Navy?

Also Air Force, since they have the remote weapons and aerial equipment that is what dominates modern war developments.

Where is the "all of the above" option? There is no one, simply because no country in the world which hopes to be a super power can just focus on one branch and expect to come out on top.
cough cough [i/]cold war[/i] cough cough.

If I had to choose only one it would be the Marines because for some reason it seems as if they do everything.

The marines are basically the navy's infantry.

So how is that different to the Army, functionally? I still don't get it.

They are all of equal importance.
The Air force can bomb people to hell sure, but what use is that in modern combat?

The troops do most of the work, but how will they be supplyed or supported without the others?

The Navy allows you to go anywhere, and hit any target. They also limit a foes ablity to do the same.

I'm gonna be the oddball here and go Navy, because classicly throughout history it's been the navy that commanded a nations respect. The air force is flashy and has some definite pros going for it(Namely speed), but a properly deployed navy can run the gambit from harassment to a blockcade shutdown, air space denial, and depending on the target, total, unmitigated decimation.

Also, keep in mind that an aircraft carrier and the planes on board belong to the navy. The air force doesn't have the only flyboys in the armed services.

Choosing between them all is like saying what part of the sandwhich is most important? They all blend together nicely to produce an army for crushing small nations of black people....I mean protecting our freedom...>.>

I'm going to say airforce, but thats because I'm a bit biased. but in reality, you CANNOT fight a successful war unless all four services are working in unison. all airpower, you're an unfeeling jerk of a military, and JDAM's are expensive. all boots on the ground, no air support, get your sorry butt kicked. all navy, and your enemy will hide inland. war must be a perfect concerted blend of firepower that culminates in the total destruction of the enemy, and the rebuilding of what you just knocked down. from the guy who hands out towels at the base on the homefront, to the tip of the spear in the skies of the warzone, everything must mesh.

Marines were originally (going back more than a century) used by the Navy mainly as enforcement/security on board ships and as soldiery, if the ship was boarded or on naval landings. Obviously, the enforcement role quickly diminished, when navies began to be comprised of all professional navymen. The marines then took on a short stint of being the primary branch responsible for controlling overseas colonies, before taking on the role of a sort of amphibious infantry (think the pacific campaign of WW2). That role expanded to include basically all air, ground, and sea elements. I suppose you can think of the marines as a more flexible response unit. They depend less on the use of overwhelming firepower and more on mobility and rapid response. I mean the first units in Afghanistan and Iraq were Marine Corps. units.
