Politics, religion, sex. Just three topics we are often told to avoid discussing at most social gatherings. The same subjects will usually always result in an argument on the internet.
But what I'd like to know is what sort of topics you personally tend to avoid on sites or forums such as The Escapist. Video games, movies, comics or even more general topics like the three above - when do you try to veer away from the comments section to avoid arguments, backlash or because you know you yourself might end up saying something brash.

To start the ball rolling, I'll tell you all the reason I've started this topic. TMNT.
That's right, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I saw the trailer and I liked what I saw. Now, I won't go in to full details of why I like this, but I will say I'm not in the group of hating Michael Bay productions or generally hating anything that "ruins my childhood". I read a few of the comments on the article from the Escapist news section and the opinion was pretty much the same. Everyone hates Michael Bay, this movie is blasphemy and the Turtles look stupid. This is why I didn't post my opinion as I felt it would either result in a lot of negativity towards me or I would simply be ignored. So I'd like to know if any one else gets these sort of feelings from time to time. Or do you just avoid the comments because you simply don't care what other people think?

Please note, this topic is NOT being posted out of any anger or in an attempt to insult people with different opinions. I have chosen the example above simply because it was a recent event that got me thinking. Believe me, there are many subjects I tend to avoid!

If you want to contribute to this discussion, please be aware that this is not a place to argue with or try make your opinion seem more valid than other's. Please be respectful to one another and let's keep it friendly!

I'll avoid mentioning the obvious ones and go right for "discussions about Metal Gear".

Now, with many qualifications, I'll talk up Metal Gear Solid to anyone who wants to listen because I absolutely love that franchise. But, as with many things, the internet has managed to turn discussions about it into vile, hateful, vitriolic nonsense that ends up even more convoluted than Metal Gear Solid 4. So many people jump right into the mindset of "This fucking sucks and anyone who could ever possibly enjoy it must be a goddamn moron" and immediately become hostile, while the other camp takes the overzealous defensive position to try countering them and it all ends up being a warzone that just isn't worth wading through. Of course, the same could be said about many game franchises (especially Sonic the Hedgehog, another of my favorites), but it just seems more prevalent with Metal Gear for some reason. What I'll never understand is why people can't seem to understand how them not liking something doesn't mean it's bad.

Aside from the odd comment I tend to avoid discussing sexism or gender politics on this site, I'm just no-longer interested enough in the subject to actually debate it. In-fact, I don't talk about video games very often here either, with the exception of Pokemon, as I don't find debating game's good and bad points particularly interesting, that's why you'll rarely see me in Gaming Discussion.
