I was recently gifted Terraria through Steam, and all I have to say is my god. I've played MMOs and other open-ended, addictive sorts of games before, but this one takes the cake. I've spent WAY too many hours playing it the past few days, and I still want nothing more than to go back and waste a few more days in there.

I've been told that Terraria is basically a 2D version of Minecraft, though I wouldn't know as I've never played Minecraft. It just looks so...ugly to me. I find Terraria to be much easier on the eyes. I've also been told there are a few differences between Minecraft and Terraria. In Yahtzee's review of Minecraft, he complained there was no tutorial or helper telling you how to start off (for example, gathering wood to build a workbench so you can build other tools). In Terraria, you start out with the basic gathering tools you need and a helper right there to tell you what you can do and what your basic goals are (for example, how to build houses in such a way so that people like merchants and nurses will move in).

And now I've been wondering. Terraria seems to have the bar of entry set a bit lower, but it hasn't been around as long and doesn't seem to be as refined or vast as Minecraft. So, to those of you who have played both: which do you prefer to play? Did Minecraft really get it right the first time, or does Terraria have a few advantages Minecraft just can't touch?

I haven't played terraria yet, but I have played minecraft.
Though I have heard that shouldn't really be compared since their completely different games.

Both are very good, but i prefer Minecraft. Terrria gets boring after you've gotten every decent item in game and are just facerolling hordes of monsters, while in Minecraft you can spend hours and hours building almost anything (assuming you like building stuff at all).

Yes, you _can_ build in Terraria but it just doesn't feel the same at 2d.

I like both, but I wish Minecraft had more Terraria elements, to be honest. You can only do so much in Minecraft before you no longer have the inspiration to do anything.

They added the underworld, the "Nether". Interesting concept, but.... there is almost nothing interesting about it. Once you see it, you've seen it all, and there is almost no point to it. A relatively shallow addition to an otherwise shallow game (when you think about it). Minecraft needs more updates, it's getting stale. Hopefully the adventure update brings a lot to the table to prove once and for all that this "beta" version we've all been playing is really a beta, and that a "full release" is on the way.

I prefer terraria. It's just that I'd rather spend a night killing bosses on a server with a few friends, rather than spending a night reconstructing the enterprise...

Spent 20 hours on Terraria, then went back to playing Minecraft. The game just felt so...empty I couldn't play it anymore.

Minecraft really needs some random events to spice things up a bit. Something like the meteors would be great.

i've played terraria for a few hours, and it didn't really catch me, i've spend many hours watching my brother play minecraft, when visiting my parents house, but haven't bought tyhe game myself.

If i was to play one of them, i'd choose minecraft, no doubt. Gameplay wise, neither are impressive to me, but the creative platform they provide, is waht would make me play one, and minecraft just seems so much cooler to me.
But for the very same reason, i'm not gonan play either, cause i'd rather spend the time i would spend building stuff in minecraft, building it in autodesks maya (3d graphics program) or just putting pen to paper and draw the stuff up.

They are both different games in different genres based on different ideas... How do you compare them?
Minecraft focuses on surviving and building. Terraria is based on RPG elements.

Terraria isn't basically a 2D version of Minecraft, its more like a Zelda/Metroid copy-paste with some building abilities.

I haven't played both for a while, but I like both. I guess I prefer Minecraft because I have been playing it much longer, but more recently I have been playing Terraria more.

Minecraft, I just love that you can be as creative as you want in the game. Plus I am not fond of the 2d thing Terraria has going.

I've played Minecraft and I haven't played Terraria, I'm aware that they are supposedly quite different, but to me Terraria simply looks like a 2D minecraft, and I'm not paying twice for effectively the same game.

Gameplay = Terraria
Creativity = Minecraft

But since the opportunity to be creative in Minecraft is unmatched by any other game and plenty of games can match Terraria in terms of gameplay, my vote goes to Minecraft.
