I was recently gifted Terraria through Steam, and all I have to say is my god. I've played MMOs and other open-ended, addictive sorts of games before, but this one takes the cake. I've spent WAY too many hours playing it the past few days, and I still want nothing more than to go back and waste a few more days in there.
I've been told that Terraria is basically a 2D version of Minecraft, though I wouldn't know as I've never played Minecraft. It just looks so...ugly to me. I find Terraria to be much easier on the eyes. I've also been told there are a few differences between Minecraft and Terraria. In Yahtzee's review of Minecraft, he complained there was no tutorial or helper telling you how to start off (for example, gathering wood to build a workbench so you can build other tools). In Terraria, you start out with the basic gathering tools you need and a helper right there to tell you what you can do and what your basic goals are (for example, how to build houses in such a way so that people like merchants and nurses will move in).
And now I've been wondering. Terraria seems to have the bar of entry set a bit lower, but it hasn't been around as long and doesn't seem to be as refined or vast as Minecraft. So, to those of you who have played both: which do you prefer to play? Did Minecraft really get it right the first time, or does Terraria have a few advantages Minecraft just can't touch?
