Puppies. I only say this because we use to have a kitten as a family pet and he tore everything to shreds. He was an evil, evil kitten! Though, now he is mellow, fat and quite adorable. He is fun to hug and squeeze now. :3

Dogs have better and more varied personalities and tend to fit into your needs.
A dog isn't just (or only) a pet. It's also a friend.
Cats are not your friends. They are pets, much like a goldfish or a bird. (Which cats eat.)

Puppies. Kittens are cute, but their cutness is reduced because I constantly know they'll grow up to be disinterested food-removal machines who only LOOK at you when you have food or when you're trying to masturbate. But puppies...they love you all the time, love being round you, love to play, they're all happy-go-lucky, and they rarely change when they get older.
