In my opinion, the best by far is Assassin's Creed, though I have a feeling most people will disagree with me.

There are three main reasons for this*:
1. AC2 and AC:B are hardly about being a badass assassin at all, and those few proper assassination scenes that are in it are lackluster and forgettable.

2. The sequels were bloated with all kinds shit they didn't need. I'm looking at you, City-renovation-sidequests. Generally, all the sidequests were utterly, utterly mundane and awful.

3. Menus. The first Assassin's Creed hardly had any menus once you were in the animus, however the sequels were chocked full of them. This may seem like a mundane complaint, but for me, I was really dragged out of the moment by all these jarring menus that were constantly and for no reason. It wasn't like the weird memory-wall things which are there to help tell the story (kind of); these things were just ugly.

*and yes, this is my opinion, not just a fact.

Ac:B
I like it the most because it improved its mechanics, the city renovation wasn't great, but it played brilliantly, the story was good, and multiplayer was a lot of fun.

AC:B for me, the crossbow works a lot better than throwing knives for picking off rooftop guards.
Also, being able to summon Assassins at will makes certain parts less hellishly difficult.

Since AC2 and ACB improved on the actual gameplay and still managed to give us a great story, AC cannot, in my opinion, be considered the best one (although I still thoroughly enjoyed it). Brotherhood, for me, has to be the best because it has the most stuff in it, most of the problems have been fixed, and it's still stupidly fun to play.

The latest one was definitely the best, mostly because of the multiplayer and Ubisoft actually fixing a few problems from the last game....though not all of them.

AssCreedBros, although the ancestor story was the weaker of the two for the first time - I imagine because it wasn't originally planned.

I was impressed with how good of a sandbox it was whilst keeping its narrative strong, even if the narrative itself wasn't all that interesting. There's just so much to do, and it never gets into mini-game boredom, nor does it feel like a waste of time.

AC2 was a massive leap forward from the first, in my opinion. It removed pretty much everything wrong with the first game, e.g. the incredibly boring yet mandatory pickpocketing, interrogating, and collecting flags that made up 3/4 of the game. Assassins creed 2 came and removed all that stuff, making every mission fun like the assassination missions from the first. Then Brotherhood came and changed almost nothing, just polishing the second game very slightly.

I'd say Brotherhood was best overall, but it's almost the same game as it's predecessor.

Assasin's Creed 2 as it was less repetetive than its predecessor and ACB was pretty much an expansion pack with very few new gameplay mechanics and only one city

This is how I look at the AC games:

Assassin's Creed: Best subtle story elements. The trips to the computers and the talks with Lucy and Vidic. Excellent stuff.

Assassin's Creed II: Best mystery. The glyphs and the puzzles and the eventual thing we saw, as well as the end of the game, blew my mo-fuggin' mind.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood: Best overall. Improved on just about every aspect of II.

Assassins Creed 2 I think was the one I had the most fun playing, Brotherhood was proberly technically speaking a better game, but it was with a taste of this has been done before (although alot less than I expecated.) So Assassins Creed 2 in my opinion.

They may have been few, but they were pretty big new gameplay mechanics.

Hmm...

I'd say Brotherhood. The original was boring and horrendously repetitive, and while the second took that and made it far more enjoyable, Brotherhood did even better with it.

I liked the first one better. It was set in a more interesting time in history, it was only based on assassinations and the story was not confusing. Don't get me wrong, the other two are good games but I enjoyed the first one more.

Go back and play the first one again. It sounds like you've gotten nostalgic about it (considering point 2 of yours). For every hour you spend playing, theres 10 minutes of speeches (which are admittedly usually pretty awesome), 40 minutes of repetitive and pointless subquests, 5 minutes of riding that FUCKING HORSE down the same FUCKING PATH out of FUCKING MASYAF and 5 minutes of actual fun assassination work.

Altair was way cooler than Ezio and his foes were better, and the deathbed monologues were just so much awesome. But as a game? It felt half finished. AC2 and ACB got it way better on that front. Try playing AC from intro to ending, on a new save file, after playing the new ones it feels really really boring to get anywhere.

Good news is though, based on the Facebook page, the next AC is gonna involve Altair. So that might just be game, set match. :D

I think Assassin's Creed 2 was the best one for me, the locations were amazing and fleshed out beautifully. The characters were great and I genuinely cared for all of them, and I felt that the combat was much better in this one.

As much as I love Ezio as a character, I'm happy that Altair is gonna be in the next one.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Some people call it an expansion rather than a sequel. I call it an expansion worth 60$. The story of AC2 was good, but hard to follow at times (though maybe it was because I was still confused about the names). Brotherhood implemented a lot of really awesome things, but they need tweaking.

Gameplay-wise Brotherhood was the best, not my favorite but you can't argue with mechanics. My personal favorite was AC2 which felt like a story not too far outside the realm of possibility. The mystery, was deep and you really wanted to know the answers, the plot was emotional to the point where you genuinely sided with Ezio, and the combat was (a little bit)more balanced. Let's face it in AC and AC:B you're practically invincible, Execution kills make it impossible to lose a fight in Brotherhood, and EVERYTHING in AC could be taken down with the sword counter. AC2 made you think a little about your fighting options though you could still kill just about everything with the Hidden Blade Counter. But those are superficial, the real reason is purely the plot, brilliantly done, introducing combat elements actually felt like part of the story and not a gimmick, Ezio's reasoning and motivations were easy to understand and hard to look past, and the side quests felt in place and part of the experience as a whole.

I enjoyed the first and second ones quite a bit, but the third one blew those two out of the water. I loved having help for a change. It really makes you feel like an awesome assassin, rather than just some guy all by his lonesome.
