Guildwars is great but...you will reach level cap before you get anywhere in the story.

Try EVE Online, there's a 21 day free trial if you get invited by someone who plays it. Try them all out before you decide, that's what trials are for.

Pen and paper ftw! Actual human interaction. Plus I find the actual playing is a lot more fun when your character can actually completely change the course of events just by killing someone they weren't supposed to.

This happened when playing Vampire the Masquerade (before it became all more emo).
Me: I'm going to take the piss out the werewolf again.
GM: But he's trying to help you guys!
Me: I know, but my character's an asshole, it's not my fault.
GM: Fine *rolls for it, werewolf goes mental and attacks us, we kill him*
Me: Few that was a close one!
GM: Give us a minute whilst I rethink the plot.

Regular RPG's are the way to go since you will actually feel like you are having an impact on the game. Pen and Paper is only good if you have a good group and a better GM.

I'd get Morrowind/Oblivion if I were you, as a good rehab game, but if you really want to play an MMO, I suggest you get EvE - It isn't really addictive, nothing like WoW, and it's complicated enough to give you enough of a challenge to rehab you off the genre -- there isn't much incentive to play hours on hours because skill advancement is based on time, not grinding (though the grinding - missions - is quite fun provided you have the time. And if you played WoW then you definatly have the time) and it's possible to buy game time in game with the virtual currency (ISK) - though it's quite expensive, after a few months of good playing you should be able to start making enough.

It's a win, win, win, win situation (i gave four points, didn't i?)

Morrowind's story is excellnt; oblivion has stronger technology/more refined gameplay. EvE is the rehab MMO.

ANOTHER REASON TO PLAY EVE: [link]http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.78645?p=1&page=2#992926[/link]
People can get REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY addicted to EVE, more so than WoW, because the game is so immersive. People get addicted to WoW because they want to level up so they can get the next big thing and be even more badass. People get addicted to EVE because the world is so realistic, the backstory is so fleshed out, the community is so great, and it's so immersive. There's nothing you can't do other than walking in stations, but in 4 months, you'll be able to do that too. CCP is even going to add (in 2010, but still)fully 3d gas giants and planets with simulated weather and rings, planetary conquest and control, managing planetary colonies and cities, even more graphics upgrades, better physics, dynamic lighting, ship customization , and of course, even more t1 and specialized t2 ships.

Are you on crack sir?

Also for the record: Station walking is end of 09, unless they changed the dates again, we have tech 3 ships first. The Planatery Management side isn't slated for a long time, not as early as 2010.

New ships come all the time, and graphics updates will be comming early enough (CCP Iris - the guy who did the FMV for the Empyrean Age trailer - is doing the graphics now. That FMV was done in a DX9 environment).

Either or, people don't get addicted because of immersion, realism, backstory OR the community. They get addicted mostly because unlike other MMO's what you do has consequences. Even though they only really effect yourself.

Sorry for hijaking the thread folks!

In answer to the OP, I would give Morrowind, Fallout (any of them from 1 to 3) and Guild Wars a shot at detox. You -could- try EVE, but if you do give me a yell as the infamous learning cliff applies even after they made the game easier for newbies =/

Maybe part of the point; it's not a grind-fest where getting to the top level and getting the best gear and the best skills is the main priority, there's much more of a focus on good skill buulds and combinations, and using them properly, as opposed to PVE combatin WoW, which one friend can do with a single button as he uses a macro he took from someone else in his guild that gives him the highest DPS rate of attack skills (and he was proud of this...).

Add in very good PVP (alliance battles in Factions are great fun), nice graphics and the lack of a monthly fee and I'd say it's well worth buying (nb, there are 3 stand alone campaigns and 1 expansion; I'd recommend getting all the campaigns, but I know nothing about the expansion as I didn't buy that.

@EVE; I'm trying to play the free trial at the moment, and while I found it engaging for the first few days I'm really starting to get fed up with it. The combat system is boring, and the sheer amount of warping you have to do for a quest which amounts to little more than kill x enemies is just ludicrous. Which is a shame, as I want to like it; the design and backstory of the world is fantastic, and I can imagine that the high end PVP is very interesting and tactically challenging. The game just doesn't seem to want to let you get there easily though. Definately not something I'd pay for.

Personally I'd try CoH/V. Lot less thinking/grinding and a lot more fun. But with a group of mates and a pack of munchies, nothing beats a good old P&P Dungeon Bash.

I know I do have Guildwars special edition and Guildwars Nightfall Collectors Edition. I just wondered looking at some of the other games in his list weather he wanted a grindfest or not.

Fair enough: I just can't quite see the appeal of a grindfest and so find it hard to believe that anyone would buy a game in order to grind

There should be a 'none of the above' choice.

EDIT: My personal favorite was SWG, but not many people play anymore so, I doubt you'd have the same experience.

I have started to play WoW aswell now though but sheerly for the fact that loads of my friends play it and it has voice chat. Also I like meeting random people in the middle of no-where and becoming friends with them.

The only problem I have with City of Heroes/Villains is that there is no auto-attack, so combat is kinda slow. Flying around is fun though I will admit.
