I'm really bored at the moment, and I've always wanted to play a civilization game. But I have two options. I could buy the new civilization 5 for thirty pounds, or I could buy civilization 4 with all expansion packs for twenty five pounds. Both I would be buying from steam, I really don't know which one to get, I have no previous experience with the series. So I have decided to leave it up to the good people of the escapist :D

Civ4 + expansions is really Really good. I've spent hundreds on hundreds of hours on it and the awesome mods on civfanatics.com

Civ5 just seems rushed and poorly implemented in comparison, hoping that will be remedied with either expansions or mods though.

I think the civilisation series is really boring but from the reviews I've read it sounds like the newest one (5) is really good if you like that sort of game.

I've only played the Civilization 4 and it's expansion packs, not Civilization 5 so I can only recommend buying the former.

However despite my apparent bias, I think you should get Civilization 4 and it's expansion packs just on principle, that principle being that if you're new to the series it makes sense to buy the cheaper yet more complete option, then if you find you like the series you could buy Civilization 5 at a later date, when it's cheaper and is bundled with expansions.

Civilization 4 is an excellent game that will keep you entertained for months, even years (if you find you like that kind of game) and the fact that a newer version has been released doesn't detract from it's greatness.

Some of the reasons that I haven't bought Civilization 5 yet, even though I'm a fan of the series, is that I'm still entertained with Civilization 4 and by some people's accounts that's still the better game.

I'm not sure if I'll like all the changes Civilization 5 has brought, so I'm not going to buy it until a few expansions have been released and more features added... I feel that going from Civilization 4 with all it's expansions and features to the plain vanilla version of Civilization 5 would feel like a step back, despite it being the newer game.

As an owner of Civilization 4 I can without a doubt say that it's worth the money. Civilization 5 have brought a lot of changes that I don't agree with so I might be biased, but I would go for Civ 4.

Go for Civ4 for now, maybe Civ5 when they work out the problems and maybe fix some retarded features, and then it will be at a lower price so I think it makes the choice rather obvious.

That's a bit like choosing between crack and coke tbh...

Civ5 is, like EVERY chiv game since 3, not yet as good as it could be, but that will change quickly. Civ4 is now as refined a binary drug is it could possibily be, so if you want to spend a looooong time playing a good game, go for that and get Civ5 when 4 now longer works...

Most addictive franchise ever. :)

I'd say Civ 5, I haven't played it but I know they've got rid of stacking which is the thing I hate most about Civ 4. I HAVE A TANK, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO MOW YOUR 15 PIKEMEN DOWN!

Civ 5 seems to be more friendly to the newer crowd. 4 had a lot of work with the economy that can be difficult if you haven't played a lot of other Civ games before, also 5 has a hex system and no unit stacking.
