Quick question Escapists, I've always enjoyed strategy games and since getting a new laptop I am now able to play one better than Rome Total War. Looking on Steam I've got the choice between Civilisation 4 or 5 and normally I would get the cheaper (older) one, especially because I've heard some complaints about 5. However there is a sale on at the moment making them the same price, and now I've got 10 hours to decide which one. Any thoughts?

TLDR: Civilisation 4 or 5?

If you're familiar with 4X games, get Civ 4. If you're new to that particular genre, get Civ 5. The AI in Civ 5 can't war its way out of a paper bag. You could hypothetically increase the difficulty, but that only gives the computer bonuses while making bad military choices, aka "Their arrows will blot out the sun."

Try the demos, I personally think the new combat in Civ V takes it completely out of sight of the previous games with their stacks of doom.

Civ 4 was Civ 3 plus some, Civ V feels like a real revolution.

I know! I happen to think the hexagon grid with 1upt is fantastic. So much better than civ 4's stacks of doom. Its just a shame that the AI is rather incompetent at using it to it's advantage.
