So, with the Sega deal on this weekend, I was wondering... Which one should I get?

I've played the first Medieval Total War, and I thoroughly enjoyed it... So, out of this list, which one!

So... Go ahead! I'd also like you to give reasons for your choice, if it's not too much bother.

EDIT: I'm trying to add Rome...

I've tried twice now. It just won't let me...

My opinion:

1. Total War: Shogun 2
2. Medieval 2: Total War
3. Empire: Total War
4. Napoleon: Total War

but I've probably spent the most hours on Rome: TW.

If Rome was on there then I'd definitely have said Rome but, since it's not, then Medieval is the way to go. With the mods and stuff for it you can bring it more up to date too.

Rome... No question, hands down, Rome.

It is the best balance between an engaging historic period and controls / gameplay that is complicated enough for you to feel like a great general when you succeed, but simple enough for you to play without having to have a PhD, three arms and two brains.

Every time I buy a new TW, once I finish it I also replay Rome one more time.

Medieval, definently. Most variety, a hell of a lot of fun. But with some of the mods for Empire and Napoleon, (especially NTW3 for Napoleon), the strategic battlefield elements are just so awesome that in terms of actual battles, Napoleon and Empire can give even Stainless Steel a run for its money.

Shogun 2, the battles are pretty fun and if you have the computer for it, the graphics are freakin amazing. After that, I'd say Rome, Empire, Medieval II. Though if I were you, I would just buy the mega pack that comes with all of them and the DLC. If I didn't already own all of them, I would probably buy the mega pack and then Shogun 2, possibly with the Sega bundle.

I second this.

I've yet to play Shogun 2, but Rome to me is the best compared to Medieval 2 and Empire/Napoleon.

I was looking forward to Shogun 2 so badly, with wonderful memories of the first Shogun making me certain that Shogun 2 would be the greatest Total War game of them all. However it strangely enough became the Total War game I played for the shortest length of time. For some reason it didn't quite capture me the same as the first one which makes absolutely no sense and I can't explain why. Maybe its the lack of really noticeable tech innovation that the middle ages allows.

Medieval 2 however got everything right for me as a sequel and I think is the game that captures the spirit of Total War the most. Inter-breeding mad royal families FTW!

Empire could have been awesome if they just fixed the sea battles and that glitch that towns would NEVER surrender or that armies found bridges bizarre contraptions and impossible to cross.

In that list....Medieval 2.
With Rome in the List...Medieval 2
*raises flame shield*

I like all though. I think I like Empire the least though.
Medieval 2 was just...WhoO.
Rome is also great, don't get me wrong.

Rome Total War and Medieval 2 Total War are some of the best strategy games of all time. Get them both.

If you're choosing between Empire and Napoleon, choose Napoleon. Empire is a steaming pile of shit.

You're right, Medieval was great but the mechanics were super simplified.
Unlike Rome, you didn't have an end game goal (Defeating the two other families/surviving the romans). That's one of the few problems I had with Medieval when I compare it to Rome.

I think in that case, it depends if you want a story with a start. Like if you roleplay, you have the faction start with Rome. While with Medieval 2, you can think and do everything you like for roleplaying. I made quite the story with medieval 2 that way :)

But Simplefied? I haven't noticed that much if I am honest.

Shogun 2 and Medieval 2 are equally fun, but since Medieval 2 is so much cheaper I think you should get that first. Shogun 2's graphics and gameplay are superior though.

If you get Medieval 2, check out the "Third Age: Total War" LotR total conversion. It's very good.

Rome but its not in the list.
Also Barbarian invasion exp for Rome is just as good imo
My pick was Shogun 2.

With a total war game or any game youre gonna be investing a shitload of time into playing, the price of the game is secondary to its quality. Why spend 100+ hours playing a 2nd rate game your thought you were buying for an bargin a £5 when you could be having a much better time with a £30 game.

So my advice is to pick the game that you think is best.

In that list, Shogun 2 and Medieval 2 are close. If you want diversity in playstyles, go for Medieval, even the European factions can play vastly different ways. If you want better graphics, better diplomacy, better/more interesting use of agents but less diversity in units, go for Shogun 2.
