So, after digging through my attic I came across a very special box. A box from my childhood. Upon opening it, there lay my Dark Angels. My favourite models ( At the time ). They were covered in dust and in varying states of disrepair.

Now, my conundrum is this; I'm starting 40K up again, a few friends are interested and are buying armies. ( Blood Angels, Grey Knights, Orks and Chaos/Tyranids )

I'm unsure whether to Repair my Dark Angel army ( Standing at just over 5000pts and mostly consisting of 1st/2nd edition models ) or too chose a new army/collect a new batch of speeeshmehreens.

I'm looking at the Tau with interest, because I think they look awesome and I like their longer range, though they'd suck in CQB unless supported with Kroot/Battlesuits. Other than that I'm not sure if I'd want to collect any of the other armies available.

So, my question to you is, what do you think I should do? Repair/Repaint my old army, Collect a new Space Marine army or start anew with Tau?( Looking at most of 1500pts battles ).

I voted before reading, so I'm gonna change my vote to the mysterious "repair your awesome old models to make everyone jealous then pick up something else you like" option. I like tau, one of my friends collects them. While they do suck in CQC if your enemy isn't prepared right or just unlucky, you won't have too much to worry about.

I say go for something else. Im not all that familiar with space marine changes over the years, but I'll just ask innocently unknowing, is the stuff they wear even "legal" by todays standarts? (Gods the question sounds even more retarted then it did in my head..)

By others... tyranids! Go om nom nom on these pesky space marines that pop up "everywhere" since the game got released.
Or if it has to be space marines, try the Sisters of battle.

I collect Tau, so here's my opinion :
It's not so much the overwhelming range (although they do have a lot of that, but Imp. Guard have more), but the mobility. Excessive hit-and-run tactics, switching around the battlefield to ruin your opponent's careful plans on-the-fly. You'll annoy, frustrate, and make a few enemies.
On the other hand, if you enjoy the painting aspect, they're not great. Vespid & Kroot are nice, but the rest is kind of dull.

If that sounds like something you're interested in, go for it.

I would, however, consider repairing your old models till you're sure your friends are serious about playing.

Repair. You've spent loads of money on them, after all.

Though, GW did change "Dark Angels Green" to "moderately Dark Angels Green" for no good reason a while back, they'd be the wrong colour now.

Also, having older models will make your army stand out amongst everyone else's.

:D

I collect 'nids, and they are very fun to paint and play. One thing that i thought was amazing with their models... they will make you bleed if you aren't careful. Lots and lots of little sharp bits and edges. Now imagine how your opponent feels when your models get up to theirs with all their little sharp bits and edges. :)

The guys who were starting it up all chose space marines ( Though so did I when I first started...though I was drawn to The DA's instead of UltraSmurfs ) So, I thought I'd go for something different.

A friend may be collecting Tyranids, so don't really want to go as them! Also, I prefer the shooty from far-away tactic. Probably because I played too much Necromunda.

"Take the objective! *Positions men to look at the objective and then proceeds to obliterate anything that tries taking it with overwhelming firepower* Takes objective. Win."

... Smells like guard. Just start with them and then work your way through the rest of the imperium.

Yeah, I might use them as a secondary army, after playing them for a fair few years I feel like mixing it up a bit!

I noticed about the paints too, I was comparing my older paints ( which haven't dried up miraculously! ) To the new ones and thought the colours had been changed. I still have a few bottles of the original DA Green left however!

Repair your dark angels. Though that does not stop you from converting them to another chapter (maybe one of your own) or even to Chaos.

I do have a few Imps. Mainly to field as cannon fodder! No idea where they've gone though...and I can't go back in the attic for another hour because I'm sneezing so bad now...xD

What the Turpster said, Nekrons are the way to go.

They're just so awesome.
Blah, I hate Necrons. They just seem so dull. I'm not sure about their rules, but I don't think they'd be the kind of army I'd enjoy playing!

I wouldn't think of repainting them to another chapter! These guys are my first army, forever in my heart as the coolest bunch of bad asses ever!

I would like to repair them, but I'm not sure I could be bothered to work through all of the units that would need touching up, because there's so many of them!

I would recommend playing around with mixing some of the new paints to get the original color. I have a couple necrons that I did in a turquoise/boltgun metal mix with a little black to darken it. Shiny deep blue necrons FTW.

Ultimately... do whatever the hell you like, provided you've got the money for it.

Personally, you've got enough by way of marines to be able to proxy virtually any model and while the model design has changed, most players will just melt with nostalgia when you crack them out. So do a dual project of building an army list of new marines (with or without character, up to you) using your DA's (who have been completely nerfed, which annoyed me to no end when 5th Ed came out) just with the new rules. Just repaint and give them a battle-damaged look, 'cos that's never a bad idea.

As for a new army, I'm with Vidi Kitty on this, go for Guard. They're easy to paint for the most part, have a vastly different playstyle so it's something new and go nuts with the tanks.

Personal recommendation would be: Eldar, but doesn't look as though you'd like them. *shrug*

Enjoy!

Shameless self quote.

I also have a bright pink and purple pariah that I did for shiggles. Never let your friends pick the colors "no matter what they choose".

When you are talking about ranged firepower, there are two main ways to go- IG or Tau. As you know, IG has tons of variety and can be both mech and infantry heavy.

As has already been said, Tau are a very mobile army, with jumping BS and Devilfish Firewarriors. An individual Tau is also much stronger (and therefore more expensive) than a guardsman.

I personally would prefer Tau, but it is all up to you.
