Every time she gets a new episode we get multiple topics dedicated to her but it always seems to be by people pointing out flaws in her argument. I can't recall the last time I've seen someone say they like her, even her defenders don't seem to care for her they just hate the amount of crap she gets.

Can we please make Making An Anita Thread a wrathable offense? If only for a couple weeks?

OT: I don't care. I am unable to care, because I've been inundated with endless Anita threads. In theory, I think she's all right but inaccurate, but in practice, I've run out of feelings to have. You people took them all. ALL OF THEM. Stop. Please. Stop.

I'd like to see to just one day go by without a feminism or Anita Sarkeesian thread. This shit is getting really old.

On Topic: I don't care. Tried watching her show on youtube once, and it was very boring.

As lacktheknack said, in theory I think she's all right, but she isn't very good at conveying the message. I really don't care about her or feminist frequency. She makes some valid points quite often, goes overboard on other occasions and in general just gets way too much attention compared to what her message and impact is.

The irony is that her detractors really turned her into a monster of their own making. Instead of having Tropes vs women become yet another obscure series on youtube it is currently the most high profile work on gender in video games.

It'd be nice, even with the fallout from the perceived precedent the community would think it sets.

I barely cared in the first place, and all of my interest has still been drained. If anything, I have a more positive opinion of her now because there's no possible way she could be worse than the hundreds of people (at least) who routinely act like she's worse than Mecha-Godzilla-Hitler.

But yeah, I haven't watched any of her videos even. I just think the fact that people still can't let go of her two years later is just... just sad. The hilarious part, of course, is that if they had let it go a year ago or so, she probably would've just faded back into internet obscurity and no one would've cared. Now, though? Like Gethsemani said, now the detractors have turned her into a juggernaut and even if she vanished completely, the impact she had on the gaming community would still be felt for months. And even better is that they managed to get the spotlight on her to grow so large that she actually began attracting the attention of developers and publishers. I honestly don't know if the entire thing is some reverse-troll mastermind plot or something, because she would've never had any impact on the industry whatsoever if people hadn't lost their minds two years ago.

It's called the Millionaires Effect.

Two sisters in high school messed around with garage band and made a trashy little song about nothing, called themselves the "Millionaires" and posted it online. That should have been the end of that.

Unfortunately, everyone haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated it.

So they got their friend onboard and tried again.

Everyone haaaaaaaaaaaated it.

The attention got them signed onto a label, so they put out more trashy music.

Everyone haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated it.

They began raking in the ad-view cash, performed on MTV, and released an album.

Everyone HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED it.

More albums came out, millions-of-views singles came out, and they went on multiple sold-out tours.

Everyone HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED it.

One of the girls then took her share of the money and got a Masters in Mathematics at university, doing the trashy "Ke$ha On Steroids" act on the side.

Everyone HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED it, and were all played like fiddles.

The really sad part? The girls stopped giving a rip partway through and began releasing stuff that directly insulted and trolled people who watch the Youtube videos specifically to hate on it, and people still keep falling for it. And now it's happening again with Anita. She couldn't have done it without the hate, so congrats, guys. You're giving her platform exposure, and lots of it.

I do. She manages to wind up large swathes of the internet by doing basically nothing. It's kinda hilarious.

Right now I'm working on finding more gamer feminist critics on the internet, and my results have been sparse, with so far the best one not even being female. So right now for all of her flaws Sarkeesian is the best female feminist gaming critic on the entire English internet. I'll keep working on it for at least the next few days.

"Like" is not really the word I'd use.

I simply call out bullshit arguments when I see them. That goes for both sides of the debate.

But we still have to ask the Question.

The first Question.

The Question that must never be answered.

The question you've been running from all your life:

If Anita Saekeesian threads, the Mass Effect 3 ending threads, and the My Little Pony threads were drowning in a river, and you had to save one. Which would it be?

I'd have EternalNothingness combine them into one megathread, fish it out, then let Sonic carry it far, far away.

I'm not a fan, just because she has decent points backed up with very poor arguments and lackluster research.

I still can't wrap my heads around why people still care about her though. I can't get much more going than "Utter indifference" when she comes up. And with everyone that screams their heads off when she says anything, I have a hard time viewing her as the bad guy.

I think the issues she raises are worth discussing, but the basic factual mistakes she makes (such as saying Hitman doesn't punish players for killing civilians, or pointing out that murdered strippers in Saints Row drop money without noticing that every other NPC does the same thing) make her videos hard to watch. Basically, I like what she's trying to do enough that I wish someone more competent were doing it.

I neither hate her nor do I look forward to her videos. I do, however, watch all of them.

I like to view other people's opinions and beliefs. Even if I disagree with them it at least allows me to solidify and consider my own positions.

Anita is incredibly dishonest and makes wild leaps in logic that make me dislike her videos. But they're common discussions that other people seem to rally behind so watching them is par for the course if you're a gamer. It's also somewhat interesting to see what a person who isn't a fan of gaming thinks about gaming when they consider themselves a harbinger of a cause.

But as for hating her. I don't know the woman. I also don't know what she really believes or thinks. For all we know we're looking at a sort of Steven Colbert moniker.

I selected the top option, but technically I don't watch her videos. I love the fury she inspires.

She's a c-grade Youtube commentator at best, she started a small beans kickstarter that blew out of proportion, she proceeded to attempt to improve the quality of her videos alongside trying to cash in on her 15 minutes of fame, she keeps up her relvency pretty much based solely on the people that hate her at this point, if the OCD people on the internet could stop obsessing over how wrong she must be for 5 minutes she would go right back to being a c-grade Youtube commentator that no one outside of a few thousand followers would care about.

I watched her early videos, the premise is sound in some cases, but her early stuff was too much just picking examples from TVTropes and talking in a very dry manner. Her video quality has apparently improved, but she still has issues with taking things out of context, and I'm not sure how many of the games she's commenting on are things that she has any real knowledge of. The Hitman thing would be the most egregious example, since there are things to criticize about Hitman's use of female characters (the Saints), but she seems to have gotten all her knowledge of the series from wikipedia articles.

What she really needs is to throw a few thousand of those kickstarter dollars into getting some editors who have thoroughly played the games she talks about who can collaborate and fill any contextual holes she may have missed. I can understand mistakes when you are talking about the 10's of thousands of video games that have come out over the course of history, even avid gamers who have played their whole life like Total Biscuit, Jim Sterling, Angry Joe, JonTron, make mistakes or miss context in games that needs to be pointed out to them. The issue is that she is talking about such a wide variety of series, she really can't be playing or experiencing them all first hand to a degree that would adequately inform her commentary. Some collaborators with prior experience, or who can at least share the research load, would go a long way to improving the factual accuracy of her videos.

Beyond that, yeah, she is pretty much only relevant because the people who hate her seem to obsess over every little thing she says, and are compelled by some kind of cosmic force to post new threads every single time. Hell, I can't even remember the last positive thread started about her, if people would stop trying to cry to the rest of the gaming community everytime she does anything remotely questionable, it's very likely I would have completely forgotten about her by this point in time.

In this at least, Jim Sterling is right, she is a monster created and sustained by the people that hate her, and she is not the next Jack Thompson, no matter how much people keep insisting she is.

*sigh*

I think her video are a bit dull and sometimes needless. (I mean, did anyone really require a half hour lecture on what a 'Damsel in Distress' is? Isn't that common knowledge?)

I also think they're benign and harmless. The amount of anger they generate speaks volumes about the online gaming community's raging insecurity and issues with women.

I find many of her detractors so petty, venomous and/or just plain dumb that I almost end up siding with her by default. Anything to not be associated with the other side.

I often agree with her general points but often disagree on specifics. Her examples are often poorly picked and poorly used.

The only reason I end up watching her videos is because they inevitably get posted here by someone screaming, "OMG, look at this filth!" Or going for their mega-thread badge.

I look forward to every episode. Now, I don't agree with everything she does/says and I do find the style of her videos can be as interesting as watching paint dry at times, but I do like the content overall. Even what I don't agree with is food for thought and I'm glad she's around to make the content she makes.
