With the announcement of a new Xbox (and possibly Playstation, though I've heard rumors of Sony not debuting a new console), I have to ask; why? Why do we need another console? I've become accustomed to the way my Xbox360 works and do not look forward to having to upgrade to the new Xbox(720?). Maybe I'm just the odd man out on this issue, but I feel like so much more could be done with the current technology.

By the way, a lot of this comes from my hatred of Kinect, and for some reason I feel that the new Xbox will use a lot of the motion feature, which would be a deal breaker for me.

So, what do you want? The current generation, or the next?

Because, if everyone thought like you, we'd still be playing Super Mario Bro's style games. Technology advancement would stagnate.

Also, it would give modern game development a push, allowing them to advance beyond the boundaries currently set by the console limitations.

Newer is better sure, but it's also more expensive. As long as games continue to be quality on the current gen I see no reason why we can't have another 2-3 years in this console cycle.

I tend to prefer a longer cycle due to the investment required in console gaming. You get more for what you paid for your console the longer it's around.

Though we're starting to see some real limitations with DVD storage capacity on the X-box side.

I'm not saying to stay on this generation forever, but definitely give it some more time to live out its usefulness. It just seems like it has a couple more good years left in it.

A new console doesn't mean you have to buy it. It does mean, however, that everyone else can enjoy better quality games. The current consoles are already way behind what can be achieved on the PC, so an update would certainly be welcome. It's not as though this generation hasn't already been around for a long time.

All of this is also true. The price would be a huge factor, since the better it is, the more it will cost. And we'd be paying a lot for a product that is buggy, and that may just catch on fire (looking at you Xbox). We'd be buying an expensive prototype that hasn't had enough fixing. I also have sunk a lot of money into my current console and do not wish to see that go right down the drain.

But, the limitations would be one reason for the upgrade. I would love to see what the future has to offer for consoles, but as of right now, the cons just outweigh the pros.

Good point, that would give the current gen enough time to live out their life cycle and provide the remainder of fun they have left.

You have to remember that the limiations of a console doesn't apply to just the console market, but it also affects the PC market, since game developers have to create games that can run on both platforms - and thus design for the lowest common denominator(hardware wise).

I would like one, considering the most modern console I own is a PSP, but then I would also like an apartment and a job that can pay the rent for one.

But, if the money for a new console were to fall in my lap at this very moment, I think I'd wait it out for the next generation. Sony and Microsoft are already dropping rumors that they're cooking up a few announcements for this year, so I don't see a point in getting a PS3 or 360 now. Most of the games I wanted out of them I can play on my PC, anyway (and the ones that I can't will probably end up on Steam eventually).

I can't wait for the next generation to come out for two reasons:
Firstly, it would mean better looking PC ports/multiplatform titles as they wouldn't be hindered by six years old hardware.
And secondly, it would hopefully make the prices of the current console generation drop, so I can finally get a PS3 for cheap. (both of which unfortunately won't happen soon it seems, as the PS4 won't come out before 2016, according to Kaz Hirai)

I feel like this generation has at least another 2 years of life left in it before we need to move on. The main issue for me is that new consoles are expensive so I like to feel that I'm getting the most use for my money.

I'm surprised that nobody has said that "we don't need a new console generation because the current graphics are fine" or "New hardware will just increase the already high development costs for games" as these statements appear in just about every thread about a new console generation. So, I will preemptively argue against those two points.

Publishers will want games to continue to have better graphics regardless of weather new consoles come out or not. This is because graphics are a very easy and effective selling point (just look at all the praise for Skyrim's graphics).

So, developers have to spend lots of time optimizing code and making graphical workarounds, which add to development costs. And the more the graphics improve on the current consoles, the more time and money it's going to take to do this.

With better hardware, developers will be able to make better graphics without spending as much time and money on optimization, at least at the beginning of the console cycle.

Obviously, there are more factors to the costs of making a game. However, saying that new consoles will increase development costs for graphics is a partially untrue oversimplification.

Yes , this generation has gone on long enough , i mean what has it been 6 or so years ? We have long past the point where a new console should have been concieved ( around 4-5 years) . I only hope it will be backwards compatible .

No, I do not want new consoles.

For one thing, the selling point for the PS3 was "look at all this power! It's so advanced that even WE can't tap into all of it! This system will be good for at least 10 years!". For another, I don't think I got enough enjoyment out of it just yet.

And lastly, this will make developing games even MORE expensive. Which will make them more expensive for US. Is the processing power to render all of a character's nose hair really worth that? Especially with the current trend to make everything brown and gloomy anyway?

There's still a lot of life in these consoles. Well, except the Wii. I can definitely see why that console is getting an update. It kinda needs one.
