I was reminded of this watching the LRR about synchronizing time. Why would people even wear these things? They look and feel as outdated as a 'cell phone' the size of a toaster.

Conclusion: Old people are the only ones who wear wrist watches.

Edit: It ate my poll, oh well.

I prefer Pocket Watches over wrist watches (What Can I say, I'm in love with the style. Plus, it gives me a sense of Aeon from Castlevania: Judgement) I believe most people use their electronic devices (Cell Phones, Portable games, Ect) as a source to find out what time it is.

Wrist watches basically died out around 2000, when everyone already had cell phones.

Last time I used one, was during military service. Wrist watch was something you practically had to have.

Absolutely nothing wrong with them. I'd wear one sometimes, if I had one really proper.

Hah, I'll do you one older. I have a pocket watch on a chain. (Granted, it's a Fullmetal Alchemist watch, but still...)

Around here, people (the kids at least) use cellphones as their reference for time. With the exception of one of my friends, who has a watch that costs hundreds of dollars.

I can understand watches as a point of reference for running or if you are in an area with no cellphone coverage (if you are going on a long hiking trip or something similar they can also be useful), but nowadays in terms of casual use they are pretty much useless for anything but style.

I like 'em.

Not analog ones, though. Digital reader is faster to read than analog. Not that analog is actually hard, unless you're fucking stupid.

i would be wearing mine right now if the strap hadn't broken.

Let me elaborate actually, i can get really OCD about checking the time and it's much easier to use the watch than be digging my phone outa my pocket every 10 min. Though as it is i have to dig what's left of my watch outa my pocket every 10 min... Also i don't think that my cell phone has an alarm function, which i set and reset daily to keep myself from spacing out and missing a class. (also been using it to wake myself up because i don't trust my alarm clock)

Oh yeah, i've been known for my epic watch tans as well. (i think it's finally gone though now that it's both the end of winter and the lack of watch, but summer is coming and i'm gonna need to get a new one for my job... the watch not the tan... but the tan might come back as well)

I actually preferred my old wrist watch to my cell phone. My cell phone can often be jammed under my wallet, or in my coat pocket, over the back of my chair. It sounds like trivial little things, but as opposed to the ability to just look at my wrist and have it be right there, it gets annoying. Plus, I'm often in dark rooms for lectures, wherein I don't want to be lit up like a beacon just for checking the time. I'm a digital painter, so a lot of what I learn to do is time saving techniques that allow me to do the most in the fewest strokes and button presses, it's a similar logic to this. Rather than dragging my phone out of my pocket and hitting the middle button to light it up and check the time, I can look at a device conveniently already attached to my wrist and easily read the time.

There is also an association of watches with status. In the case of someone like me, who has a cheap Swatch, little status is implied, but there is something to be said about a man in a Rolex... mostly that he can afford a Rolex.

I wear one. It doesn't work properly, but it looks damn cool. It's a stainless steel skeleton watch that ticks just a bit too slowly to screw up its time telling slightly. You can see all of the gears and moving bits! :D

I do. You never have to turn off a wrist watch for everyone else in the room, their batteries last forever, it's easy to find a waterproof one cheap, and they take up less space. They're very practical when you're out of doors. Also, wrist watches look good in a way cell phones can't. A silver watch with a black jacket or shirt looks awesome.

I have two and they are both awesome! I have a crystal covered Marc Ecco one (the nice watch) and I just bought a black Adidas Originals calculator watch (everyday). Love it!

I often wear one, although more out of habit and as an accessory than because I need it to keep track of time.
