Why do we choose online gaming? Is it the online anonymity that allows you to do / be whoever or whatever we like? Is it the thrill of fighting against other real people as opposed to bots or AI? Why do some people choose to stick to single player games rather than multiplayer? I personally choose online gaming because I love the competitive side of it. What about you?

I would choose it so I could play the game long after I finished it. Playing Halo 3's campaign for a 10th time is beginning to grate. Fighting against other people is a reason why I cannot wait to get back on LIVE.

Personally I play both about an equal amount.

Single player is a relaxation exercise. Play through a game of challenges at my own pace.

Multiplayer is about the excitement for me. Whether its outright competition in CoD4 deathmatch or stressful, no-pause co-operation in Left 4 Dead.

Campaign is good, but in multiplayer you know it'll be different every time and competitiveness always draws you in.

It's the satisfaction of taking noobs to school. "Oh, is that the school bus? Is that the school bus Doug? Is it your stop Doug? Oh come on Doug!"

I just tend to play single player, competitive people online always annoy me.

allows for more diversity, more of a challenge. It gets to the point in games in single player where you know what the ai is going to do next, where to go next, etc. Multiplayer evades this problem :p

I am not very picky when it comes between the two, but I do prefer single player.

However, I'll easily hop on to an online match or just an online romp when I'm asked. I am however better on the PC than I am on the Xbox 360, but that might be due to the fact I am using a router with the Xbox 360 since I tend to lag a bit too often or more than I'd like to. PS3 you ask? I never played on it online and don't plan to, yet.

I play both generally, I like the online games for the social networking but I do tend to prefer single player more because I can play at my own pace and not look like a total noob to other people.

The enemies think like real humans do. You can always tell the difference between a person and a bot. I love a challenge as well and just love taking off the head of an enemy and knowing that there's a reaction on the other end.

But I do play a lot of single player games along with multiplayer.

It depends. I'll play RTS games online because I love to obliterate armies and prove my tactical greatness. But other than that, offline single-player is fine for me. Especially if it's a sandbox game like Fallout 3 or Mass Effect or Sonic Adventure 2...

I like the chao rasing.

I like online multiplayer but I prefer single-player games because I don't like being compared to other people.

Most of the games that I buy are single-player, or games whose multiplayer function is insta-join during campaign stuff. It's not that I don't like multiplayer, it's more that the games I like are centered around single player. That being said, I still enjoy Halo3 and TF2 online, Gears 2 online, and even the occasional Mario Kart or Smash Bros match online, just because it varies up what I'm used to. It's not a "Hey there's someone on the other end reacting to me" thinking, it's more of a "Hey, I'm getting bored of campaign where there's little challenge any more."

i used "who cares" as "both", since there are advantages to both;
single player is better for getting a player into a story (thinking of baldur's gate and other great, older rpgs here), while online gaming... well, you play with/against others, for the sake of playing (or grinding, griefing, laming, whatever :p) and basically is fun, and isn't predictable. unlike a.i., no matter what game developers claim.
