Poll: Why do you hate Nintendo

Woah woah easy now just before you grab your torch and pitchfork it's worth mentioning that Nintendo is reason I'm a gamer today. I confess that the headline for this post was chosen to be inflammatory to engage discussion about the recent sale figures for Nintendo. Of a more specific interest to me has been the awkward transition from the global Wii phenomenon to the sales disappointment of the Wii-U. I personally am extremely happy with the Wii-U and look forward to seeing where nintendo takes it before the NX. So the general question I'm curious about is why at one point in time you thought that you needed to buy/own a Wii but don't have these same feelings towards the Wii-U ?


I really aim to cover all perspectives with this topic so please share your experiences. It may be worth venting your frustrations with nintendo on a platform with like minded contributors.

Well I personally don't hate Nintendo, otherwise I wouldn't own two of their consoles, a bunch of games and a load of merchandise.

Fanboys always seem to have a problem divorcing criticism of something with outright hatred of the thing as a whole, and from my experience Nintendo fanboys in particular seem to have this problem. You can call out Nintendo's out of touch attitude to YouTube and still be able get way more excited than a grown man should be about a new Pokemon game. You can lament their lack of unified account system but then throw money at the screen at that new Nendoroid Kirby.

It's not hypocritical or a betrayal to call out something you love, hell I'd say that's vital as a passionate fan. You want the thing you love to be the best it can be right?

Not sure how much you're going to get with a title like that, but I'll bite...

The Wii-U is the only current-gen console I own, and it will probably remain that way unless No Man's Sky delivers on its sales pitch. I've become disillusioned with the current video game market, what with triple-A publishers trying to nickle-and-dime everyone to death and the indie scene slowly destroying itself with drama. Even PC gaming has lost its appeal now that Microsoft wants to spy on everyone and talentless hacks vomit mountains of shovelware on Steam (I'm also bracing myself for the inevitable attempt to make paid mods a thing again). Nintendo is the only one of the "Big Three" that dares to innovate without shaking their customers down[footnote]Well, mostly *glares at Amiibos*[/footnote] and, while it doesn't always work, I applaud their efforts nonetheless. Simply put, they offer what nobody else does.

Having said that, I do have some major issues with some of its practices, particularly with regards to online footage of their games. It's clear that Nintendo execs are woefully out of touch with the current environment of streams and Let's Plays and the impact they have on the market. What others see as free publicity Nintendo views as piracy, and their hilariously hamfisted attempts at clamping down on it have resulted in a PR black eye. Then there's the localization issues and Nintendo's steadfast refusal to release many popular series overseas (give us Yanks Mother 3 already!). Finally there's the lack of support for third-party developers, resulting in sparse game libraries compared to their competitors.

Also, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't somewhat miffed by the NX announcement. I've only had the Wii-U for ten months Nintendo, don't abandon it already!

I'm the opposite. I avoided the Wii (mainly because I hate motion controls) and I own a Wii U. Although I will admit that until I bought a Wii U maybe around six months ago I had no intention of buying one. It was almost an impulse buy. I'm happy with it though.

The Wii U is actually only the second Nintendo home console I've owned, the first being the Nintendo 64. And the 3DS is the second Nintendo handheld I've owned after the Gameboy. So there was a period of several years where I wasn't playing Nintendo games at all. I'm happy to be back.

I don't hate Nintendo, I hate the corporate side quite a bit because they have some seriously awful policies but I love their games and I like the consoles, the only reason I don't own a Wii U is because I don't have enough cash but if I had the money I'd get it, I liked the new Smash when I played, Bayonetta 2 looks amazing and it comes with the first game which I didn't play, new Star Fox game looks interesting but the controls seem weird, Splatoon seems cool, I'd love to play Hyrule Warriors and the new Zelda, definitely want Mario Maker and Pikmin 3, hell there are a lot of games in that console that I want to play, the Xbox and PS4 on the other hand... I mean besides Bloodborne, Until Dawn and Guilty Gear Xrd I have no interest in the PS4 games and XBOXONE, well I want to play Quantum Break but that's not out and considering how Windows has decided to start supporting PC I might get to play it anyway on PC, much like Alan Wake, besides that there's pretty much nothing I care about enough to want to get one, sure Halo 5 seems cool but I only ever have fun playing Halo in Co-op and I know no one that has an XBOXONE[footnote]Actually I don't know anybody that has any of the 3 current gen consoles and my friends and I get together to play Wii and N64.[/footnote] so there's absolutely no point to it since it won't have split-screen co-op.

I never owned a Wii. I wanted one but being jobless and homeless for so long it wasn't an option. I skipped that console generation entirely. That's how I ended up with a laptop and went to pc gaming. I have a monster desktop now.

The moment I had the means though, I bought a Wii U. I'm quite happy with it, having a few Wii and Wii U games now. Bayonetta 2, The Last Story, Super Mario 3D World, and more. Just picked up Super Mario Maker.

Even without all the 3rd party games people complain about missing, I really like the console. I'm getting a ton of enjoyment out of all the games I picked up and dare I say it: they are fun to play.

I thought I was done with Mario since I didn't like Mario U or 3D Land, then I took a risk with 3D World and loved it. (I grew up on Mario)

Some of my favorite games currently are Wii or Wii U exclusive. If they weren't I'd just buy them on pc. My steam account is already 600+ games in size.

Nintendo gives me fun I wouldn't have had from pc, or the other 2 consoles. I have no complaints about the Wii U.

I suppose I'm using the recent sales figures to gauge brand loyalty and it seems that being reduced from the wii (100 million lifetime sales) to the wii-u (say estimated lifetime sales 20 million perhaps) seems a little bizarre to me.

I must admit I don't know all the specifics with this policy but this has changed now right. I see Nintendo games on twitch all the time.

Welcome back to the party mate. Kinda curious if you've been tempted to hunt down any Wii games you've missed despite your feelings toward motion controls.

I completely sympathize with your position in that regard and I hope you get the chance to experience all the games you listed there. Do you feel a price cut would work in Nintendo's favor ?

Just wanted to say I'm glad that your situation has improved, I can only imagine the obstacles you faced to get to this point so mad props. I'm also enjoying the PC(steam) combo with the Wii-U and like you said nintendo games are simply fun to play. I suppose I should also brace myself for the 3rd party aspect of this topic.

Well gaming consumers aren't as loyal as you think and don't buy purely on loyalty. If that were the case then the Saturn wouldn't have been a failure, the Xbox One wouldn't be trailing behind the PS4 and the PS3 wouldn't have had such a rocky start.

Companies need to earn a customers trust on a case by case basis, and quite frankly the Wii U was a misfire.

I still think Nintendo's only true fault with the Wii U was it's name. Sure, those of us who game on a regular basis and keep even semi in touch with the news surrounding the Big 3 knew that it was a new console. But how many people went in thinking it was just a new version of the Wii? Or some add on?

Name it something other than the Wii, make it obvious to the average consumer that it was something entirely new and it would of done so much better at launch.

Oh I definitely agree with that, the Wii name just confused mainstream consumers. Not only that but the launch games weren't all that either; 'remember Arkham City? Well how about spending $60 to get it again except with an annoying and gimmicky control scheme, even though it's probaly like $10 at GameStop on 360 at this point?'

It's a shame too because there are some really great games on the thing.

Well the only grip I have with Nintendo is they ruined a potentially increadible Rareware game "Dinosaur Planet" and turned it into Starfox Adventures.

So thanks Miyamoto, none of that would have happened if the game did not feature of fox-looking character.

Despite the Wii being the only Nintendo console I ever really had (mostly) unimpeded access to AND hating motion controls, I don't hate Nintendo. In fact, I'm considering picking up a Wii U at some point, not entirely unrelated to the release of the next Zelda. Having never played the pre-Twilight Princess ones, I thought the delight factor of the two Wii games outweighed the sometimes considerable aggravation with the controls and some glaring bad design choices. So I'd be up for moar of the goodness.

Yeah, don't do that with your titles. It's especially annoying to the people who don't own the consoles.

Anyway, I used to love Nintendo, but then I bought the Wii, and before I sent it back they mentioned SSB Brawl, which gave me new hope. Being the fucking awful shit that it was I decided I will no longer trust Nintendo on delivering a quality experience, and I'm so glad I did. I prefer the Wii U but I don't care for anything on it.

I don't hate them, but they're shitty business decisions will bring me around.

Their policies on YouTube are backwards, amiibos are a cool concept, but the fact that the are released in a limited number only encourages scalping, and I would like to see them go 3rd party, as opposed to making their own systems, but I don't actively hate them.

I'll buy good stuff they do from here on, I won't buy crap stuff they do. Simples.

I certainly don't hate Nintendo. They brought me so much happiness for a solid decade of my life (until the PS1 came out and we pretty much parted ways).

But I no longer love them. I think they have wildly squandered their potential by hamfisting existing IPs into what should be new IPs and consistently misreading the market on the console with the one golden exception of the Wii who provided a nifty gimmick that really resonated with us but now everyone has. They are way behind on network infrastructure and globalization. They also have too many IPs running through one man. As brilliant as he is, that's a bottleneck.

In the future, Nintendo has to have more IPs to survive, they have to have hardware that makes a compelling argument to purchase in addition to having diverse 3rd party support and they've got to be more mobile as an organization with the ability to transition to new and better practices.

Don't like them ever since the Wii came to the market, constant Mario game releases, and even moreso when Other M became a thing.
Still love my Gamecube and every game I own for it, but current days Nintendo is everything but about what I liked about them
