Don?t get me wrong, it makes a lot of business sense: re-release old games by just polishing them up a bit and adding trophies.
But do you appreciate the HD remakes from last gen? Do you think they?re a waste of resources that could be better spent making new games? Do you like the idea but would rather they remake games from older generations?

I like the idea in theory but I would rather they just re-release the games for the current generation as they originally were. How a game looks and plays is an important characteristic, even if it doesn't compare to the current generation.

If there are good games that younger gamers missed, why not, but only the best triple A titles, and remaking saves a lot of time and resources on the concept and gameplay and redirects them to polishing, graphics, and realization.

I'm fine with them, but only if they add much more than the original.

If its just a HD remake of a game I already own then no, but if they were to add more content(achievements, online multiplayer, maybe extra stuff) with the HD then I'm all for it.

I feel like these have more value to the people who missed them the first time around than actual fans of the game (since they already own it). I know I've been thankful for HD Re-Releases, Director's Cuts, Gold Editions, and what-have-you for giving me a chance to get the full experience of a game that I missed or initially wrote-off.

I'd like to see more games do this that were critically-acclaimed, but poorly sold. Things like Psychonauts could have benefited from a second release since most people didn't find out about how good it was until it had pretty much disappeared from most retail outlets and gamers had to rely on second hand copies or illicit methods to experience it.

Some games need a HD release. Shadow of the Colossus wasn't meant for huge, wide-screen LCD HD TVs, because of this, it's so blurry it makes my eyes bleed.

You left out... allows me to buy games without buying a console to go along with it.

And... allows me to play older games on my HDTV without them looking like total ass.

I did pick up a PS2 to play older games and I'm simply not happy with the way it looks on my TV.

But mostly I think releasing HD remixes of last gen's game is a very smart business move. The games are still recent enough that they're still fairly fresh in gamer's memories. Therefore you don't have to be dealing with a really popular title to get a fair number of sales. And when you have games that get name-checked a lot as some of the best games released in recent memory (such as Shadow Of The Colossus), that's a game you really want to be available on a current gen system.

There are a few games that i would love to see re-released. the original Deus Ex for one. I was also quite happy that Serious Sam came out in HD. Of course i do still play the original Deus Ex every now and then, but the new graphics add a layer of immersion to it.
Or in the case of Serious Sam hilarity.

sure why not? especially if its older games which old farts constantly reflect about saying its the best but youngin's don't play since the damn thing is over a decade old. (I'm looking at all the ff6 cult extremists. you know who you are. you infect every thread relating to any jrpg ever. )

I like them. They bring video game history to kids who might not have heard of old games they might enjoy, although admittedly the ones that work on current software, like Serious Sam, might be a waste of resources, depending on how much money was actually put into them.

Games that don't work on current platforms, on the other hand, are always worth it, in my opinion. I don't have my Nintendo 64 any more, and some people have never had it, so Perfect Dark HD on Xbox Live was a good idea. This doesn't only apply to consoles either. There are PC games like Fallout and System Shock that take some work to get working on today's computers, so I would greatly appreciate remakes of those.

If a game is re-released, why not remaster them? It brings something new to the games for those who have beaten them a million times, while still maintaining the gameplay mechanics that would be lost in an all-out remake, and it appeals more to those who haven't, so they can be more easily pulled into the video game history.
That's the thing.
I would love to play the original Fallout and Fallout 2 in the Fallout 3 engine (rather, whatever they're replacing it with; that engine's a mess) but something like God of War 1 & 2 isn't old enough to be that much different from the last gen version. It just costs the consumer more to get the new ps3 version.
I'm all for remaking OLD games like the original Fallouts and original Phantasy Stars but remastering/rereleasing games from last gen just seems like a cash grab.

They're cheap to make, and easy to sell - but a hard sell on their own, which is why you normally see "compilation" packages. In a way, though, it's dishonest - for example, when Sony sells a compilation package of PS2 games for your PS3, having removed PS2 backwards compatibility, it is asking more money for games you may already own. Is the "remastering" enough to be worth it? I do not know.

I honestly believe that the only re-make from the last gen game I'm looking for is the Ico/SotC remake cause I played SotC but could never find a copy of Ico anywhere, now I have a chance to play it. And I am looking forward to to see SotC in HD to see what Team Ico can do to push the games already great graphics into HD.

I'm for them because I missed the entire last generation. I'm looking forward to Beyond Good and Evil HD, the Ico collection, and the Metal Gear Solid HD collection.

Assuming you own a later model PS3 and you want to play God Of War 1 & 2. The only way buying the older version is cheaper is if you already own a PS2. Factor in the purchase of a PS2 and at least one memory stick into the equation and suddenly spending about $10 more for the PS3 version of the game seems like a pretty decent deal.

And it doesn't look like ass on your HDTV.

I've only recently made my way back to consoles. I had an Atari 2600, a NES, then switched over to PC gaming. Now that PC gaming and console gaming are on a fairly even footing, I went over to console gaming for the convenience. I did end up buying a PS2 to play older games... but I've barely played it. Simply too far away from what I'm used to. I'll probably end up giving it away when I finally play through the games I bought for it.
