Poll: Why Killstreaks?

So one thing that has caught on from CoD is the killstreaks. I've been seeing these in more and more games. Why?

Killstreaks ruin balance. As soon as one person gets ahead, they suddenly have a tool to get a whole bunch more kills and cement their lead. I don't get why they are a good thing. I guess they are fun if you are in the lead, but if you are at the bottom, it makes it impossible to catch up and is only frustrating to get killed over and over by the killstreaks of the person in the lead.

Any explanation on how they improve the game? I just don't seem to understand the reason for why they are there. I'm probably not the only one to feel like this, but I would like to hear the other side explaining why killstreaks are a good thing

The origional 3 from CoD 4 were fine, just 3,5 & 7 were all we needed. Not too bullshin, and fairly balanced.

I think CoD 4 got the killstreak balance right.

All the CoD games after that have been a masterclass on how to hogtie balance, rape it's wife, kill it's dog and delete all it's save games. All while electrocuting it's testicles.

I'm not sure how this works in CoD multi, but kill streaks should symbolize the 'skill' of the player with the mechanics of the game, that's it (right?)

Pretty much this.

Perhaps if something more life death streaks from CoD where lesser players were given handicaps, maybe that could work?

I think it's funny that you think this should be the order of torture techniques - delete all saved games >Kill dog>rape wife.

If they're done right, they can be good, but it's kind of like QTEs, and that's once some game does them right, now everybody's gotta have them too.

Lucien, I assume you're not very good since you don't quite understand why they're good but do why they're bad. When players become more skilled, they are able to use better rewards, so it's not only a thing of "if I get this killstreak reward, I'll get ahead even more" it's also "HAHA look what I managed to do!" Aren't bragging rights a centerpiece of FPS gameplay?

It's a reward for playing good, or being on fire. You can't deny that giving players a benefit when they're doing well is a good thing. Sure they suck for the guys lower on the ladder, but there's also balance in how many are given. CoD only allowed 3 available, and that's good because it prevents that one player from going totally hog wild with killstreaks, while still having them happen occasionally.

They definately need a perk to help combat the campers, or give campers a hinderance as theyre all linked in my opinion. The campers camp in one spot all game, which is an irritation in itself, and in return they fill the sky with shit which often just turn into tools to "spawnkill".

I don't think that they are necessarily bad things. As a player, being awarded killstreaks just makes it more satisfying. The only real experience I've had with them is in CoD... and I thought it worked out, because none of the killstreak rewards were really game changers. Except for the tactical nuke... THAT I absolutely hated. Though it wasn't very often that it was used.

Anyway, killstreak rewards just add to the variety of the game. As long as they aren't ridiculously overpowered rewards, I don't see much wrong with them. I do see your point though, for sure.

If I could send you a high-five through the internet, I would do that twice.

Call of Duty 4 and World at War did them fine. They were helpful, but they didn't dominate the game. That's why I dislike Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops multiplayer.

This, the 3 from COD 4 were more of a support, they would kill the enemy team but only if they were not paying attention. In MW2 they are constant and almost all of them are extremely lethal.

Probably be more like the Reavers from Firefly.

Campers are fine as you know where to find them spawn campers are where there is a big problem but I do see why you would be annoyed at campers in a broad sense. Actually I just remembered there was a mod where if someone stayed in the same spot for about 2 or 3 mins the game would drop a piano on their head.

OT: I have nor problem with balanced killstreaks like in CoD4. The heli pushed it a little far with being able to see through walls but it was ok. The ones that they have now are really just taking the complete and utter piss.

Killstreaks are one of my least favorite additions to the Call of Duty franchise. The helicopter was a bastard. If more maps had MGs it would be okay. The dogs were manageable in WaW, but are obscene in Black Ops. I've turned entire games of domination around with a single dogs killstreak from a carepackage. The other team literally couldn't spawn with a dog tearing their throats out while we proceeded to capture every point.

If you're good enough to get a killstreak, you're good enough to kill more players, anyway. And if you're just camping to get killstreaks, you suck and need to stop playing. In MW, it wasn't uncommon for me to get two airstrikes in a row by calling one in, dying, and getting five kills with that airstrike. I could do that over and over again if I felt like it. I can kill myself with my own grenades then rinse and repeat.

How about this: If someone stays in one spot, a 5 foot radius maybe, without moving for more than a minute and a half, an orange dot appears on every member of the other team's radar so that everyone knows where he is. Orange because I don't believe that color is used for anything and it could quickly denote the location of a camper
I do like that, I remember Counter Strike used to have something similar, where a kind of green shockwave would ripple out of the camping player if they stated in one place for 10 seconds or more.
