Poll: Why the Un-necessary Hate on the New SimCity?

I'm serious, the unadulterated hatred against the new SimCity game is absolutely ridiculous, and what's odd and annoying enough is that it's the same 5 or 6 opinions everyone keeps spewing, so for anyone not really paying attention, I'll list them out and give my two cents on 'em.

1. ALWAYS ONLINE REQUIREMENT

I completely agree with the dislike of forcing a game to always be online in order to play it. But, I only agree with it on single-player games, but SimCity is designed around building cities next to other players, so I really don't understand the hatred for not being able to play a game offline that is designed around playing online.

2. ORIGIN

I got tired and over of the huge fiasco over Origin a LONG time ago, but people still love to beat it up because EA EVIL, apparently. Really in terms of the architecture, how it works, and what it does Origin is pretty much Steam, the only difference is Steam selling a multitude of other games while Origin focuses on selling EA (and now recently Ubisoft games).

3. THE CITIES ARE TOO SMALL

It's true that the largest size you can have is about a medium sized city from the older SimCity games, but it's already been mentioned to death by Ocean Quigley (who has the greatest name and mustache I've seen in a long time) that the GlassBox engine and how they've designed the game limits the scale they had in games like SimCity 3000. Quigley has even mentioned how that it's easier to start a game small and wonderful, then expanding it, than making a large and average game beautiful.

And it can also make sense in terms of gameplay by forcing you to specialize what your city does, instead of having some kind of mega-city which does everything, which ties back to the region of multiple cities and the multiplayer connectivity.

4. ITS' BEEN DUMBED DOWN

We honestly need to end this idea now, that simplifying something automatically means dumbing it down. Take the game Dungeon of Dredmor, the game which took the rogue-like gameplay of older PC titles to a new audience.

Do you have to press ALT+SHIFT+F5 to use a potion? No, you can just click it on the inventory bar, but it's not dumbed down. We had these same arguments with Civ 5, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and now SimCity.

But honestly, SimCity needed to be simplified. I haven't played the SimCity games before, but I found an old copy of SimCity 3000 lying around, tried it, and was absolutely confused on what I should do. And that's absolutely terrible for trying to get people into a new genre is when they look at your game and don't know what to do.

But I can look at the new SimCity and think "Oh, that makes sense! I am interested in this game because the learning curve isn't a wall."

5. EA WILL JUST SHUT OFF THE SERVERS WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE IT

Honestly this one is just the silliest. Companies only shut down game servers when the negatives outweigh the positives to running it. When there aren't enough people playing a game, why should you keep officially hosting it? But of course, EA is literally the devil for not hosting a game about 200 people play.

Did I miss anything? Am I right? Am I wrong? Put your opinions, replies, and hatred in the comments below.

Nope, you pretty much nailed it, it's a new SimCity, designed around multiplayer. Less focus with large areas and more on quality than quantity.

It's a lot of fun and challenging too, as you need to focus and collaborate with your neighbors, and bad mistakes could result in nuclear meltdowns.

Here's the thing, for me at least. Even ignoring all of the always-online bullshit, I still just don't want to play a SimCity game with other people. I just plain don't want my carefully planned city to be affected by some other jackass that thinks it's funny to send all of their trash to me. I would rather my gametime be completely unaffected by what anybody else wants to do.

Now, I'm not saying that this multiplayer couldn't work at all or anything. I'm sure that there are a lot of people out there that would want to play a game like this with other people. It's just not something that I want to participate in.

The reason all of this upsets me so much is that I feel that this game could work as a single player experience. There's really no good reason that I've heard why there can't be a multiplayer option for the people that want to play it that way, and a single player option for the people that don't. Then, everybody would be happy, and I think a lot more people would be excited, or at least interested in this game.

That's the point. It's forcing people to engage in multiplayer. SimCity has never been a multiplayer game. Adding anything other than a completely optional multiplayer will take away from the game experience. This makes it seem more like FARMVILLE than a serious city builder.

I am indifferent to this, it's more the hassle of having yet another gaming client. More downloads, why do that when you can just put it on something that works... it's just a pain. Not quite like console exclusivity but just as annoying.

SimCity has for most of its installments been about managing huge cities, making them grow to huge proportions has been the end goal. The only limit is the sky and map borders. I like the idea of some specialisation based on resources, but if cities are forced to be dependent on others, it breaks the game. Why not have all of them? Smelting factories, casinos, everything. Versatility trumps specialisation. This will put off anyone who wants to build a thriving megalopolis.

4. ITS' BEEN DUMBED DOWN

We honestly need to end this idea now, that simplifying something automatically means dumbing it down. Take the game Dungeon of Dredmor, the game which took the rogue-like gameplay of older PC titles to a new audience.

It has been dumbed down. The only bit of "simplification" I agree with is reducing piping and electricity micromanagement, as these were a distraction. Though if you are absolutely confused by the game mechanics, I'm sorry, that's your problem. Maybe it's just not your thing? In any case, if you aren't prepared to deal with a learning curve, what's the point? My view on this that it has been far too "simplified" and is now oriented towards instant gratification and not strategy or planning.

The interface looks plastic, honestly.

I wouldn't care about it, except with always online DRM, what can you do? EA could shut down the servers in an attempt to force people to buy the newest installment. Can't trust them on this.

The only thing that interests me about SimCity 5 is glass box. However everything you listed as a negative is a big enough reason by itself to not make the game worth $60.

I really have no desire to create an origin account, log on to EA's notoriously slow servers (I play NHL and Madden series, terrible servers for major releases), to play a tiny rectangle of unmodifiable landscape that literally ONLY makes sense to build in perfect tiny squares of roads.

Some of the little stuff glassbox accomplishes are pretty cool, but that's 1 amazing bit of coding surrounded by a lot of stuff I don't like. I'm enjoying Cities XL, its not perfect but its way better than Sim City 4.

Remove this online garbage from my single player game, I don't want it, I don't need it, and I refuse to buy games that force it on me.

You know, in hindsight you probably should expand the poll for

1. Yes and I've played the beta/demo
2. No and I've played the beta/demo
3. Yes but I haven't played it
4. No but I haven't played it

Because a lot of the complaints seem to stem from people who haven't played it.

To be fair, you can't actually SEND the trash to other people. Instead you volunteer your various services, assigning extra ambulances, patrol cars, garbage trucks, etc., to other cities to pick up stuff. And you can buy another city's surplus resources (water, energy), or buy off the global market.

You can also make a region invite only, so no one can join, and manage all the cities in said region on your own.

And while people have complained "if you can do that, why not play make it offline SP then?!" but fail to realize that it's design has always been around the cloud and coop multiplayer. It's like Battlefield 3 where yes, you could play in single player mode, but you miss out as it was not designed to be played like that.

I just need a way to shoot the UFOs down... and make sure my police force is big enough to quell the zombie uprising.

Yes, all those things are understandable because of the way they designed the game. The fact that they designed the game that way is why people are mad. There's apparently enough SimCity brand recognition now that the people that used to play the games no longer matter, and should be left by the wayside because EA has decided that every game should be as social and mainstream as possible.

Also by just killing a game they created without giving out the tools to keep it alive somehow they're contributing to the slow destruction of our medium's history. If they want to bring a new game into the world it's their responsibility to ensure that it can be preserved, even if it's just letting people host their own servers.

It's simply not the type of game I have any interest in playing online, nevermind being forced to play online. Something like Battlefield 3 for example... sure, I can see it. I don't necessarily agree, but I can see always online having merit and fitting with the type of gameplay that series provides.

But SimCity? Not really. Not in my eyes at least.

Pity because I really do love the series, the older ones anyway.

Nobody is saying the online requirement is bad for both single player and multiplayer. They are simply mad about it being required for single player, me included. Unless I move to another place with better Internet, I am literally unable to play the game, single player or otherwise. I haven't heard a single person complain about being able to do things in online multiplayer.

I personally haven't had that many issues with Origin, except as I mentioned before it doesn't agree very much with my shitty Internet. Where Steam will reconnect itself whenever the connection returns and will continue a download where it left off, Origin throws a tantrum and makes me start all over again if the connection fails mid-download.

If ever I am able to play this game, I will wait to see how the gameplay pans out before judging one way or the other on this one.

4. ITS' BEEN DUMBED DOWN

We honestly need to end this idea now, that simplifying something automatically means dumbing it down. Take the game Dungeon of Dredmor, the game which took the rogue-like gameplay of older PC titles to a new audience.

Again, I'll wait and see for myself on this.

5. EA WILL JUST SHUT OFF THE SERVERS WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE IT

But again, this problem wouldn't exist if they'd just make it offline. Not only is it a terrible thing to do to your customers, but it's a terrible business plan in the long-term. They're basically giving their game a shelf-life. The games I've bought on Steam I can play forever, and on that same token people can continue to buy them forever. Sure Steam has lots of little games that probably don't get many sales on average, but when the seasonal sales roll around people will impulse buy when they can see they can snatch up four games for $1.49 a piece. If 500 people think the Cave Story + for about a dollar in a flash sale was a good deal, that's $500 for Steam.

But when (not if) EA decides to close down the servers for the game, then that's it. The game is done. They can't make a dime off of it anymore. Hell I bought Sim City 4 for $4 during the Christmas sale. Do you know how many years old that game is? Ten years. Probably about the same number of years until EA starts thinking about shutting down the Sim City 5 servers. Steam is still making money off of SC 4, and will continue to as long as they spend the minuscule amount of server space to host it. That tiny investment will give them a steady drip of profits as long as people keep using Steam. Yet here EA has managed to throw away the greatest advantage digital sales have over physical sales--being able to sell something again and again without having to produce more or "stock up." It's just staggering, really. It's almost as though they don't even want to make money.

As I understand it, most of the hate revolves around them trying to turn it into a social game, a kind of city-themed Farmville with brand recognition.

It doesn't help that the social/multiplayer aspects are being used to justify always-online DRM. People don't like that DRM as it is. Using something else that they're not too keen on to justify it is not going to improve matters.

I have no idea if the hate is justified. Luckily, I don't particularly care. I was done with SimCity sometime around 1995.

Now a new SimAnt game? That I could get excited about!

I'm mad at SimCity because I'm basically forced to play with other jackasses. I'm mad because I can't use an excessive amount of cheat codes to make the game ridiculously easy. I'm mad that I can't reload a save if I try something absolutely dumb and it doesn't work out. But mostly I'm mad because EA and Maxis assume they know how I want to play SimCity.

Look, if someone else buys it and enjoys it, good for them. But Maxis is making a game for a pretty specific type of SimCity player, and I am not one of those.

I think it looks great and I'm very excited to try the multiplayer aspect! Origin works fine, I actually transfered all my old EA games there via support with keys they will add games released on 2005 if you still have the manual and key, the support is quicker than Steam's and the cloud saving feature works perfectly, it's a way smaller library of course but it would be nice for Steam to implement some of it better, their store prices are terrible(here anyway.) but I only buy origin games from Amazon and Steam anyway.

Always online drm is no big deal I'm never offline anyway, them eventually shutting down the servers could be worrisome but the only bastards who ever did this were Gamespy and some MMO's far as I know.

I wouldn't care about it, except with always online DRM, what can you do? EA could shut down the servers in an attempt to force people to buy the newest installment. Can't trust them on this.
Why's BF2 still up then? Or C&C Generals or why did they delegate the legacy C&C servers to an interested party? It's not their modus operandi to shut down servers so people buy the next one and has no precedence, they're known for eating studios not ending multiplayer servers. Hell some MMO's probably not even turning a profit anymore like UO, DAOC and WAR still have their servers up.

Sim City was not designed around multiplayer. They would not be offering this multiplayer if they didn't want always-online DRM and thats just the truth. If they ever said they always wanted the multiplayer, thats even less true than when Blizzard insisted that Diablo 3 was fundamentally designed for online and yet somehow, for the PS4 version singleplayer is in.

And to be honest, as they've described it so far, the multiplayer is pathetic. They've given up serious important features of the original Sim City (like being able to save), so that you can get polluted by your neighbour.

In fact the design of the game even includes a singleplayer mode (because you just don't accept neighbours around your plot) except you have to be online. And I imagine thats going to be the most commonly played mode, because Sim City isn't some sort of competitive thing, it's meant to be a game about creation and free expression, not having the free expression hampered by other people. Sure it's nice to have a multiplayer mode, but that#s not close to the first thing people would have wanted in a new Sim City (although the following the people around, which they did include, and curvy roads are the two things people wanted most)

They're doing stuff where you don#t even get all the code on your side, they're designing it so the equations are handled server side to make it one of the first genuinely unpiratable non-honestly multiplayer games. This is purely about squashing piracy.

So I really hope it gets hate, I hope it gets review bombed and I hope no-one buys it so that publishers learn to stop trying always online DRM and next time, just give us frickin' Sim City instead

Why do people hate it? Because its always online.
Always online failed in Diablo 3. People who had prepurchased the game weeks ahead had to wait to play. Servers went down, and single player gamers were locked out of their games due to company shenanigans. The game's real-money auction-house infiltrated every aspect of the game.
Always online failed Ubisoft. They have numerous games which require always online. And servers go down. Players get locked out of their single player games because Ubisoft has to update. Or whatever.

Sure, some may say, "Oh, well you're only locked out of your game for a day, quit whining." Well, why should I quit? Always online confers zero benefit to the consumer. Me. However, it confers harm to me. I have to deal with their problems, at my expense.
"But it was built for online play. But it makes the game better." May be true. However, Sim City has been a single player game for its entire franchise. An optional online is great. But required online is ridiculous. Look at Spore. It was another creating game that was built with online in mind, but could be played offline as well. The "always online" requirement has nothing to do with making a better game. It's about piracy. Which is pointless, as people will hack and copy the game regardless of how much DRM you throw in it. So, its a practice that is a minor inconvenience to hackers/pirates, and a major inconvenience to gamers who shell out $60.

Finally, a game that requires online will not last forever. I just played some n64 the other night. And I know, generally, that most of my games that I have purchased over the years will still be playable in a decade. But this new Sim City? It will last only as long as EA has money. And considering how their stocks have been going the past two yearsish, it may not be very long.

I am not a big fan of multiplayer. I play a few rounds of TF2 from time to time and did my part in ME3 to get my galactic readiness up but that's pretty much the extent I wish to go to usually. I play games to ESCAPE from other people and their bullshit. I do not want to have to always look up at some grand "best cities" table and go, "Oh! My city sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls compared to donny6357's bustling metropolis". Also, on the always online front in general, I don't want to have to stop playing if I lose my connection and I want to be able to pick up the game a decade from now and still be able to use it because I bought the damn thing.

Peace out.

I was tempted to say I'm talking about real games, none of which I can remember having it's multiplayer turned off and then I still said it, yeah well what can I do.

This list tells me it's just sports games, games that heavily bombed and I never heard about(which sucks I agree.) and some social media crap. Most apparently not even on the PC so don't think it's relevant to the discussion unless Sim City is now part of the EA sports division.

Always online failed in Diablo 3.
I played it, it was fine except for a bit of lag on the first day and I'm not even close to the servers. That's highly exaggerated.

While there are a significant number of sports titles, there are others that aren't sports related. Additionally, the assertion was, "...what's stopping them from shutting off the online to get you to buy the newer version?" Well, the sports titles are a perfect example. Why is Madden 11 off? That's the only copy of Madden I have and I used to enjoy playing it online...
