When I say Dreamcast for those of us new to the gaming market, the Sega Dreamcast was the final console for Sega before they stopped making consoles and sticked to games only.

Slightly different circumstances... ok radically different circumstances for Nintendo than there was for Sega, Nintendo is rich, Sega wasn't, the Wii is a 'market' success even if it isn't a success for gamers, but even still, if this thing is a flop, it has to hurt.

And, of course, Sega didn't have a handheld, not that Nintendo are doing particularly well with their last one, likely due to iOS/Android infiltration of the market.

Whether or not they proceed is the question, and if the Wii U is a success, the chances are slim that they'll stop, I'm posing this question under the hopeful circumstance or 'What if' it doesn't succeed.

So even if they aren't in the same financial situation as Sega, they may decide that all the money is in the software, and release games for the other console manufacturers of the 9th (and possibly 8th) generation onward, perhaps even PC.

Or the best thing, would be for them to start making good consoles again, like, back in the 64 days... mind you, I converted over to the PlayStation camp long ago, but still, if they make enough exclusive titles I want, then I might consider having it along side the PS5.

I don't think so. Nintendo is big enough at this point to where even if the Wii U is a total flop, I can't imagine it would set them back too much. Plus...they're Nintendo. If they ported Majora's Mask to the 3DS (not even full remake, just port) they'd already be back on track for their power house.

On another subject though, I remember hearing a rumor that Sega is gonna try to jump back into the console market with a new handheld. I don't really have anything to support that, but it'd be kinda neat if it were true (and very sad if it flops...)

hmmm I can sort of see the comparison since in my limited knowelge the dreamcast was almost a generation of its own

and the wii u seems to be coming in early..then again the other players are bringing theirs out as well..

You say that like the DS series handhelds haven't sold a million billion units worldwide. The 3DS could have sold exactly 0 units and the DS would still be the topping selling handheld ever (the DS original alone has almost outsold all three Gameboy variants). And funnily enough, the 3DS has already outsold the Dreamcast by almost a million units.

The situation is not remotely the same. SEGA of the late 90s/early 2000s was horribly mismanaged, prone to in-fighting, and losing money in nearly all markets. The Saturn was a bust, the Sega CD was a bust. I'm surprised they even greenlit the Dreamcast in the first place. Meanwhile, if any game company can be said to "have it's shit together", its Nintendo. They make money like they own the presses. The Wii and the DS pretty much destroyed the console market share. They are nowhere close to desperation.

Even if the Wii U was a Dreamcast sized failure, Nintendo would shrug it off. It wouldn't be the first time one of their systems bombed (Virtualboy) to no apparent effect.

Oh no, that isn't happening anytime soon.

And the Wii U won't flop. Every person starved for a new console this year will buy it.

And it's "hopeful" that the Wii U flops? I would not hope that at all.

So... there was once a company is a particular situation that made a console that promptly flopped and from that day forth they never made another console.

Now we have a different company in a completely different situation about to release a console. Will they suffer the same fat as the other company?

Not quite following your reasoning there matey.

I'd vote for an, "I hope" option.

I really wish Nintendo would stop making home consoles and just make games.

Nintendo systems are really only good Nintendo games. Can anybody seriously tell me a game that would not have been better on the PS3/360?

How on earth does that make sense?
well (personally that is)

I probably dont know enough about the Wii u or other consoles to judge

I dont know what its 3rd party suport is going to be like, for me thats very important, more so than exclusives...like if the Wii U had "Mario super 3D galaxy land 3" thats good and all but if I cant play the latest assasins creed game,Bioware game or Dead space 4 then thats a problem

as for power...well if the other consoles are going to be more powerful...*shrug*

and anyway...core gaming focus, I know for a fact the other consoles will have a (more or less) core gaming focus...not so sure about Wii U, though they said it will..it has to be powerful enough to be able to compete

If that's the type of game you enjoy, why on earth would you get a console?

Those all come out for PC. Consoles aren't for wRPGs and FPS games. Heck, if a game is multiplatform, always get the PC version. I follow consoles because I don't as much care for most multiplatform titles. Heck, I wouldn't have bought %90 of the games in my Steam library if they were only for a console, they're only there because they're the limit of Steam's selection and because they costed like $3. I don't even understand the point of getting them for the console.

And yes, the Wii U will have plenty of third party support.

Heck, people don't somehow realize it, but the Wii itself had plenty of awesome third party games.

FPS?

...*looks at list*...

Im not seeing any FPS there

my PC works well but its not Ideal..plus pretty much outdated by the time the next gen will come out..I am thinking of upgrading for the next gen.

(besides theres always the apeal of "put it in and it will generally look good and play good")

plus DRM, lack of retail suport for PC and used games and the fact that most AAA games get related on consoles

also I like PS3 exclusives...nintendo exclusives .....HAHAHAHAHAHAHA this is 2012 not 1999, nintendo

Sorry, guess I jumped the gun. Dead Space is a shooter from EA, so I automatically figured it would be in first person.

Well, all the types of games you mentioned come out for PC. If they're the type of games you're interested in, I'm sure you'd be better off upgrading your PC.

If you like PS3 exclusives, also, though, then I'm sure there will be games on the Wii U that interest you.

Dead space is anything BUT a first person shooter, hence why I love it so much

anyway my point is, you might say "consoles arnt for WRPG's and FPS" which may have been true...like 10 years ago

but just look, ANY AAA games first place to go is the console, even somthing like dragon age or one of the biggest WRPG's around right now..skyrim...consoles

dont get me wrong, I prefer PC (I still dont like playing shooters on a gamepad) but somtimes owning one seems kind of pointless, because things thease days are so console focused, and Im not into indie games..MMO's or RTS's

HOWEVER I am interested to see if things shift at all for the next gen, Im beggining to feel the whole industry is getting a bit bloated, especially with the extra cost of another generation....it will be interesting to see

but anyway, eather way it doesnt matter WHO is making the conole, Im not going to rush out and buy one come launch day (or at least Ill tell myself that now :p) I want to wait and see whats best for me..because for a while Ive been torn between my tryst PC and my more reliable PS3

Skyrim would definitely be better to play on a PC than a console.

I don't see how you're seeing things these days as "so console focused". Heck, Steam itself is one of the most powerful forces in the entire video game market. And a petition for a game like Dark Souls gets 100,000 votes or more. The PC is more successful and practical than ever.

Especially if you enjoy a sort of game like Skyrim over something like Tekken.

Probably not. Sega flopped big time with the Saturn and that caused a lot of distrust with developers and consumers. Wii's ability to draw even more of an audience while still making good typical Nintendo games, probably did nothing but boost trust. Even more developers want to create games on their systems now. Not to mention so many games coming out on multi-platform now. But if it is like the Dreamcast, I might get it. Cuz the dreamcast was great.

I don't think it will, but I hope it does. I don't play the Wii that often, but I would love to see the likes of LoZ, Metroid and Pokemon on the Xbox. But I don't think that, even if it does flop badly, that Nintendo will be in that bad a shape.

No, I'm pretty sure Nintendo are secure for years to come with consoles because of their avid raging fanboy mass that would buy a Nintendo Microwave if you could play Mario or Zelda on it. It'll probably do fine like the Wii.

Sega flopped because of a lot of stupidity from Sega of America trying to squeeze out the 32x just before the Saturns launch and Sega of Japan dropping the Saturn really quickly. Also not having a Saturn specific Sonic game that was good.

That said I'm not getting the WiiU, I didn't like the motion controls of the Wii and now it's a controller with a bloody screen on it. No thanks. Now that I hooked my PC up to my TV there's not much reason to even get another console since I can play it just like console. Even got a 360 and PS2 controller hooked up to it so that's fantastic.

it will not flop, because of all the diehard nintendo fans who will buy one (myself included).
