DISCLAIMER:
Please note the following contains a spoiler about Portal 2 and possibly Half Life Episode 2. If you haven't played either, do so as they are fun as hell. You have been warned. and by the way this is concerned with mostly there single player games, but some bits on the multiplayer. And yes while im aware DoTA wasnt originally theirs, its still worth mentioned

I know its been discussed to death with the example of Half Life 2 Episode 3, but it does make you wonder, why has Valve never released a 3rd version of the current properties? Now one would give an example of there being 2 expansion packs for both of the Half Life games, which would count as three releases, but they are merely expansions, and since then Valve has declared it is over its Episodic phase and has now moved into using games as a platform itself for releasing new content, which means Portal 2 is going to continue on as Valve will support it as they have with Team Fortress 2 and to a lesser extent Left 4 Dead (because L4D already has its replay value in the different ways the campaigns play out). Now with the DoTA 2 coming out, and the amount of support Valve will give that, it makes me wonder, will they ever release some that ends with 3? The most requested would be Half Life 3 (and personally im willing to give Episode 3 the skip because i thought number 2 ended the story in such a way it would lead up to the story and events of Half Life 3), but even Valve have stated something about Portal 3 being in the works but again they ended Portal 2 in such a way that having Chell as a protagonist would be redundant and to bring her back considering the puzzley awesomeness she's been through. so that asks another question should Valve make a third version of their current games which one will it be?

Left 4 Dead 3, if they introduced a ton of new mechanics the campaigns could be the best without taking away from what made the series great. I still have to play all the Half Life games first and I have no idea what DoTA is.

When did they talk about Portal 3 being in the works by the way?

thats true considering how hyped Portal 2 was. but then again this is Valve we are talking about, and i havent seen them release a flop so far. well from a financial money making perspective.

In a lot of cases, I'd rather development studios invested in new IP, rather than churning out sequels and flogging dead horses. That's not a blanket statement of "all sequels are bad", since things like Mass Effect or Assassins Creed work exceptionally well as a series of games.

But sometimes, enough is enough. Don't ruin a franchise by making sequels just for the sake of bleeding more pounds out of consumers. I'd rather a series goes out on a high (same goes for a lot of TV shows actually. They should have stopped Heroes waaaay before they did).

Like you said, Valve likes expanding on what they've already got, so TF2, L4D(2), and DoTA2 will all be expanded upon, while single-player HL is most likely to need an update.

i would agree with most of that but you cant end on a high note if you havent even finished the story which is the case with the Half Life episodes.

True enough. I should probably have clarified that I was making a swooping generalisation rather than commenting on Half Life or any other game specifically. Franchises like Silent Hill for example - enough now, it's turned into a parody of itself. Frankly I'm sick to the back teeth of bloody Mario. And don't get me started on yet-another-reboot of Tomb Raider. I'd also say that Portal should stop while it's ahead.

But in cases like Half Life, where there's a gaping open end to the story arc... Yes. Finish the plot!

Lol Tomb Raider has gone on for too long XD, as long as Nintendo exists there will always be a Mario. Valve wont make another Portal because Portal 2 will become the platform for DLC, New maps and co-op etc. Other examples i would add is Resident Evil. although i would say Rockstar seem to have gone beyond making just GTA cames with L.A Noire and Red Dead.

I'd guess L4D3. Just have a feeling. Of course, i don't want it to come out soon, and hope that when it comes, it'll have a lot of new features and stuff.

Half Life Epsiodes ARE Half Life 3- and according to Gabe Newell, were improperly named.
What they should have been titled is Half Life 3: Episode #. Thus the first two poll options are the same game. Anywho, I think Episode 3 will be the next game, since Portal, L4D and Team Fortress are all well-built terminators if you will, of any given sequelage, and DoTA 2 hasn't even been released yet.

Guess: Valve will never come out with Episode 3. Ever.
Left 4 Dead will get a 3rd installment.
Half-Life 3 will come out within the decade... Probably closer to 2020 than we think.
Portal 3 will come out within 5 years... Be significantly less amazing than P2.
Team Fortress 3 will come out sometime before Portal 3 as a "We're sorry we're not shelling out games as quickly as you want" release for the public.
DOTA3... Remind me why Valve is making DOTA2? They didn't make the first one as far as I know.
