So, someone at my work decides to take three days off. I'm amazed he got away with it, because he wrote no reason as to why. I asked him. He said it was birthday Saturday, and that he wanted to get drunk all weekend. I wouldn't care if it weren't for the fact that I got stuck with the position he was suppose to work Sunday night. A position I can't for the life of me perform without losing it completely (i.e.: yelling out profanities).

I asked around to see if anyone else can take it, but to no avail. So, fed up with the guy's B.S., I called him and told him he had to take that shift. Now, he started putting blame on one of our managers, who wrote out the schedule for the week. I do not blame the manager, for she has to work out the schedule for EVERYONE who actually works.

He truly believes he is not at fault for taking off so many days for a senseless, selfish reason. I wish I could say I was a hypocrite in this situation, for I didn't work on my birthday, but I never requested off. Plus, I spent the entire day worrying over the well being of my grandfather, who passed out early in the morning (and we still don't know what cause it, but he's fine now).

Now that that's out of my system, I can have a reasonably fine day.

Your birthday is just an excuse to have a party - he should have worked like most people do.

School won't let me, but I would go home early, not a whole day off. Maybe do only afternoon the next day from the party, but that's it.

3 days is overkill.

I think you should be able to have your birthday off,
if you don't have time on that date to party, do it on the following weekend.

The birthday cake is a lie.

Nah, my birthday's in summer so I'm at home then, since I don't work (I'm at university). I doubt I'd ever pull a sickie for my birthday, although I'd quite like to get weekend tickets for the V Festival this year since my birthday is right in the middle of that :D

Surely people can take their holiday entitlement for whatever reason they wish? If he's got holiday left to take, then what's the problem?

I have gotten boned so many times in my life from work. I don't remember the last time I had my birthday off, and I always got stuck with the fun holidays as well (new years, halloween, boxing day). I refuse to believe that birthdays are any different than another day in the year, and can be celebrated whenever, so no need to book it off.

Letting your colleagues down for a reason like that is lame. If you don't have the time to party, then too bad, but can't just skip work.

I'll probably still go to work on my actual birthday, but take the next day off so I could have a kick ass party on my birthday.

question, was it his 21st birthday or his 18th?

I take off any day I can. So yes but I don't celebrate it. My boss also owes me big time so I can get away with it.

he's not at fault, he took off 3 days that he requested and got approved for his birthday party.

saying he's selfish is kinda like me saying you are selfish for not wanting to take the shift that was assigned to you by the managers.

but I'm am definitely not saying you are selfish, i am saying that regardless of reason if he requested 3 days off and got approved he has the right to his leave period. The reason he took the days off shouldn't really be anyone's concern besides the managers.

in short, he is right, if you are going to blame anyone its the person that approves leave and makes schedules, aka the managers.
