In Portal 2, Wheatley (voiced by Stephen Merchant) has some of the best lines. He's witty and when he makes a mistake, he never seems to get flustered. He forges bravely on, never seeming to lose his edge even though he clearly has no idea what he's doing. In fact, he reminded me of "the Doctor" from "Dr. Who." As a bonus, the actor already has a show on the BBC. Does anyone else think he'd be a good choice for the next Doctor?

This topic = winning, and yes this is something I would love to see, but I am not in a hurry to see Matt Smith go.
As much as I love him and think he's hilarious Merchant is too goofy for the Doctor. The Doctor has to be goofy yet still suave at the same time and I don't think Merchant could pull that off. Plus he's a lanky bastard.
I wanted Mark Sheppard as the next doctor.

Really? I'm calling shenanigans if he survives past this season, he's reckless even by the Doctor's standards. He's surviving by the graces of the writers if he sticks around much longer.
I don't know, I've not seen him have any significant part outside of Ricky Gervais stuff, but unless he really has to try to put those roles on I don't think he'd be a good choice. All the best doctors have had to do very little more than be themselves to pull it off.
I could see it happen next time they reg cycle in a replacement. I still like Matt Smith as the doctor. I only have the previous two to compare him two since the original series never aired in Canada and Stephen Merchant is defiantly a better fit then Christopher Eccleston was.
Actually they could, there's precedence for it. Romana, one of the fourth doctor's companions was a Time-Lady and she regenerated into a form identical to a person they'd met on a planet. It was commented upon and she kept the form. You could have the Doctor regenerate into him, as long as you comment that there must of been some mental influence or something from their meeting.
