I'm gonna go ahead and say no I wouldn't. I believe dying or killing for a bit of land is a pretty damn backward thing to do, if we want to get anywhere as a race, we need to unite, not destroy each other.
Although obviously we're all going to tear each other apart before I get a chance to say that from any position of power, so....

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

In these modern days of warfare, how do I know that killing for my country will actually benefit my country? If I shoot a Taliban soldier and I'm in the army, have I actually help my country? Or if I kill a drug lord and I'm a civilan, am I not help my country just because I didn't do it out of patriotism?

Yeah, I have no problem end the life of someone who has threatened my country, and by extension all of my family and all but a few of my friends. While I respect a man of an opposing military who has not attacked civilians, he is still is making strides to end my life and those of my comrades and therefore I will return the favor, as regrettable as it may be. Now if the US was the out right aggressor with no pretext I would definitely have an issue but thankfully that really hasn't happened at all in US history. A terrorist on the other hand will get no sympathy or respect from me and I would end him like the dog he is with no hesitation or regret.

EDIT: I am joining the US Air Force with the intention of gunning for a Combat Pilot slot and requesting deployment at the earliest opportunity.Just thought that was worth mentioning...

Lets just say that I hope I never have to. Like First Aid and Emergency Preparedness, I hope that I really have wasted my time. The military is one of those careers that, in a perfect world wouldn't exist. But it isn't a perfect world, and we need a military. As George Orwell said, "Those who "abjure" violence can only do so because others are committing violence on their behalf." I am planning on joining my country's Navy

I hate it when people say humanity is a race. IT HAS BEEN PROVEN WE ARE A SPECIES! with many sub species or "races" in it.

If i truly believed my enemy was a threat to my nation and the people living in it, yes i would be willing to kill. but i think the song crusade by Voltaire fits into the wars we are currently in.

I wouldn't kill just for country. Is someone invaded the U.S and was killing people, I'd fight back. Or in self defense. But just because they're the bad guys and we're the good, no.

Yes. But for the country and the flag, not the government of course. Of course, if you're willing to kill, it stands to reason you had better be willing to die as well.

No.
I would kill for myself, and those i care about, and possibly for people i did not know, in order to protect them from unjust harm. Whether they're my countrymen or not doesn't matter.

As far as countries goes, all the people in my country whom i don't know are as much strangers to me as people in other countries. Just because we're born on the same piece of land doens't mean we're tighter with each other by default than anyone else i don't know.

I think a more interrestin question would be this:

Would you kill, without government mandate (you have no legal right) to protect people from your country, whom you didn't know, from an unjust attack by another country?
Would you kill, without government mandate (you have no legal right) to protect people from another country, whom you didn't know, from an unjust attack by your country?

Okay, that was 2 questions, but the point of them combined is, do you consider it different scenarioes, when ethically judging whether it would be okay or not?

Would I kill for my country? No. Would I die for my country? No. But would I kill and die for the morals and personal beliefs I hold? Yes, yes I would.

Let me just slightly modify the answer I gave for the other thread this is obviously inspired by.

Mr Thin said:
Killing for my country is essentially killing for 22.6 million people, so hell yes I'd kill for it.

With that many people in my country, odds are at least one of them is worth killing for, and that would make the taking of a life worthwhile.
Obviously it's not such a cut-and-dried question; context and circumstance can change things. It's a simplified answer to a simplified question.

But would you kill and die for a country that shares and protects some of those personal beliefs you hold?

I personally would, and that's how I justify doing it for my country. Neither Canada, or the UK is perfect, but I'd still be ready to pick up arms if the need for it came.

No. Die for the people? Maybe. I wouldn't join the army or serve my country's interests in such a way, but if we were invaded I would take up arms to throw them back. I'm not about to take a life at the command of someone else, or because our leaders disagree on something.

Yes I would. Because that is still fighting for what I believe in. What I would not die or kill for is my country just because it was my country. That to me makes no sense. A country is nothing more than just a name given to a piece of land. Only when meaning is attached does it become something more.
