theoretical situation, a complete stranger is in danger, you can chose to save them and die quick and painlessly in the manner of your chosing or abandon them to a horribly painful death.

what do you do?
edit, that was meant to be let the stranger die and save yourself.

I would never abandon someone to a horribly painful death in order to spare myself of a painless death. That's just not fair.

Besides: I don't mind dying much.

I can't see myself even considering sacrificing myself for a stranger for any reason. Even the thought of it makes me feel somewhat sick. I'd just hope I wouldn't have to watch, cuz I think I'd still feel like a dick about it, but I'd rather feel like a jackass than nothing at all

You've not phrased the question very well. Your question was "would you do A or B?", but you've given "yes" or "no" as the answers which doesn't make sense. Could you revise the "yes" and "no" answers to "I'd let the stranger die" and "I'd sacrifice myself".
On topic based on your scenario, I'd like to think that if it was a quick painless death for me to save someone else from a slow horribly paiful one that I'd sacrifice myself, but who can really say unless they were put in that situation.

I think I'd save a 6 year old girl earlier than a middle aged man.

So it depends.

(I'll go with the female option, yeah I'm sexist, sue me)

Heck no, I am too selfish for that. I'd maybe do it for a good friend, or a relative I like, but not someone I've never met. Sorry strangers.

thanks for pointing out the flaw in the question.
edit: apparently I can't fix it.

I can't die, who would the world revolve around then?

In all seriousness, I can't empathise with them due to knowing nothing about them and I value my own life more than others.

It pretty much boils down to 'Would you kill in self defence?'

That's ok. The more interesting part will be what people write rather than what poll answer they click anyway.

Call me heartless if you want, but I would not sacrifice my life for that of a strangers, nor would I expect a stranger to sacrifice his life for me. plus If he is a stranger then I know nothing about him, he could be a murderer for all I know, and if I gave my life so that he could live, he might then go on to kill every one I cared about. just food for thought.

No way in hell I'd sacrifice my life to save strangers.
Survival instinct baby, when faced with death, we'll do powerful things to save ourselves, don't BS and say you'd let yourself die, because you wouldn't.

Pretty much this, I would die to save a small child I didn't know from danger, but I'm not selfless enough to give myself for a teen or adult stranger.

Fuck the stranger. My life is more important to me than life of a complete stranger. How the stranger dies is none of my concern. I would do my best to save the stranger without risking my life, but if it's obvious that I would die saving the stranger I would just abandon him/her. I would feel bad afterwards, but at least I would be alive. Win some-lose some.

If it obviously suicide to help, screw them. If the chance of successfully saving us both is quite high I'd consider it, more so if it was a female in danger (natural male instinct is to protect the women).
It also depends on the situation itself.
