Star Wars: The Old Republic is undeniably one of the most promising and impressive MMOs i've ever seen. Speaking as someone who saw some of it at PAX East a few weeks ago, it's amazing and it can't come soon enough.
Which is why it's baffling to me why they don't put out an open beta of it.
Over a million people already are in line for closed testing, and I'm sure i'm not the only one who hasn't been picked to play. So why wouldn't Bioware just put out a beta?
Start doing pre-orders, and ensure beta access to buyers, something like that. The game I saw at PAX looks just too damn good to be almost a year away, and I think that putting out a beta of the game would whet the appetites of the public for a fully-fledged release.
What do you guys think?

I voted no, but I really should have voted on "I don't plan on playing." I have yet to find an MMO that can hold my attention after the new game month runs out.

Also, it's an MMO. Forced social interaction with internet trash is a bit of a deterrent for me.

I assume they're testing the game itself, open betas on MMOs tend to mainly be for testing the servers (from my understanding at least). Also, gamers these days seem to be so stupid that they simply equate the word beta with demo, and so it can do more harm than good.

Join the Escapist's TOR group if you're interested in the game by the way: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic-SW-TOR

Now only 3 of our initiation tests are sexual in nature, so sign up today!

In its current form no, the game is just not looking like what was promised, hopefully they will release some decent player footage soon instead of the weak looking ones that are out now.

I think the main reason there has not been an open beta even though its pretty much done is that Bioware/EA realized they put together a $300 million dollar shit sandwich. The rumor is they are still trying to balance out the classes even this late and having to completely revamp lots of game play and entire planets.

Don't get me wrong I do appreciate they are not trying to push a shit sandwich on us and at least attempting to resolve it unlike some recent MMO's that have been released(i.e. Warhammer Online). However, that is probably why they are not having an open beta yet and have consistently pushed back the release date. The servers for the game are all online and the whole thing is up and running, but I do know its still being completely run inside Bioware/EA. Hopefully they will resolve it and we'll see an open beta appear here in the next 2-3 months at the most.

Would never pay for an unfinished product. Beta = buggy & unfinished. Nothing you pay for should be buggy and unfinished.
This is Bioware remember, Released = buggy & unfinished too.

Why the hell would I pay for a BETA?

That's just 'pants on retarded'.

The whole point of a BETA is to iron a few bugs, get some user feedback, and - hopefully - lure people into buying the FULL game.

I think they're 4 years too late for a MMO. Personally I hate MMO's, I dislike that pay $60 for a game and keep paying monthly just to be insulted by kids who can't spell or think grammar is a cookie.

Huh?

Only really buggy BioWare game I've ever played was DA: Awakening.

you should see Dragon Age 2... it's even worse! that's funny cause i just remembered there was a PC offer that if you buy DA2 you get Mass effect 2; doesn't that smells like desperation?
