ok so ive had the same computer for the last 7 years and during that time it has crashed a total of 3 times and was actualy useable for gameing about 0 times but now i have a shiny new computer with 2gbs of dedicated graphics for all the shiny new age games and has a case that will put most alienware computers to shame but there is one small problem stopping me from playing my favourite classic on a graphics level higher then -3 or just sitting up and buying the newest game without studying it.
The name of the simple fat unmovable cow is *gasp* windows vista thats right let me allow the fact that a computer that is little more then a 4 days old has vista.

ok you done well the thing that i dont get about vista is why the hate i mean yeah it is a bit stranger then what the norm is but it seems to run fine and hasn't shown any hatred for anything
that isnt a game i mean my god how many games are exclusivly XP and 7 it just pisses me off to no end for example what is proberbly my favourite game ever (oblivion) is unable to work on this becouse oh look its XP only.
so yeah why all the hate to vista and why all the hate from vista to my games.

Is Vista unable to run games in compatibility mode for XP? I would have thought that it could.

Windows 7 is definitely better though.

I played Oblivion on Windows Vista. It's definitely possible. A simple google search will help you fix any problems you encounter.

Also, your post was really poorly written. I had a hard time figuring out what the hell you were trying to say.

**Edit**

Also, how in the hell did you find a *new* computer with Windows Vista? I think you bought a computer that's 2 years old, that just hadn't been sold yet. Seriously, I don't even know where you could find a new computer for sale that runs Windows Vista. Manufacturers pretty much ditched Vista at first possible opportunity because of how bad the press it got was.

If you're wanting to get the most out of what i'm going to assume is a direct x 11 capable graphics card and setup, windows 7 will be the best for you. You can buy a one-time install OEM version of windows 7 to upgrade with (you don't even need to re-format the HD, it's a simple UI upgrade) which is cheaper than the retail version.

I'm not saying Vista is bad, I agree with the 'why the hate' question because in my time with it, it was perfectly usable; but windows 7 is a HELL of a lot better than vista, and is an absolute must if you're gaming.

Vista isn't as bad as people like to say it is... After some work. With some customisation I had it working fine, and it is undeniably better for high end computers. But, now we have Windows 7, which is easily the superior OS.
Anyway, Vista had nothing to do with any troubles I had with gaming, it was my laptop that did that. I played Oblivion, for one thing, so it definitely should work.

Don't computers that come with Vista offer a free upgrade to Win7? If you can get hold of a Win7 install disc, try wiping your machine and installing 7. When it asks for your license key, I think it will accept the Vista key from the sticker.
You could try an upgrade install, but I wouldn't trust it. I'd want to remove all traces of Vista from the drive and do a clean install.

Win 7 is pretty much what Vista was supposed to be and failed at.

I'd suggest going Windows 7, and then have dual boot to XP if there's stuff you really want to play that just won't work.
I used Vista on a business machine, and it was fine, but that was after the first service pack (or two?).

On my machine, XP native isn't an option because the installer just loooves to bluescreen... so I have been known to run an XP virtual machine on rare occasions.

I've been using Vista for the last 3 years or so and I've never had any problems with it, granted I don't use it to play games so it might be a let-down on that side but for what I use it for it's fine.

Vista sucks. i had vista for three years and it kept crashing, losing and corrupting data, and slow the computer like hell. Then I did the upgrade install, that worked fine for around, um, three weeks I think. I then did a clean install and haven't had a problem ever since.

I found Vista to ACTIVELY DENY ME MY GAMING LIFESTYLE. With Vista, the sound for most of my games was nonexistant, and half of my games were incompatible with it. I downgraded to XP,and things worked FINE. Then a couple of years ago,I upgraded to Win7,expecting another Vista fiasco. That, gladly, didn't happen.

Long and short is update your OS.

Because Vista sucks.

I just checked the wiki age for Oblivion and Vista - Vista came out after TES IV. That means that it's not Beth's fault, it's because the OS is terrible beyond belief.

BUY WINDOWS 7.
I uhh, I hate to be that guy, but oblivion consistently ran better on vista than XP since its release. Oblivion absolutely works on vista, I can personally testify to it's level of working on vista, since I was playing it on a vista system since oblivion was released (my younger brother has also never had problems with it on his vista running desktop).

Vista is a better system than XP ever was. I don't care how much you love XP, do not bother quoting me and posting replies, I don't care why you think I'm wrong. Not even a little. Xp was windows 2000 with a slightly different gui tacked on. The only reason it was popular was because of the sheer longevity of its lifespan (I don't remember seeing it majorly being used in business until something like 2004/5) and it's basic attempt at no looking like complete ass (which, as is true for most people with primitive computer skills, is irrelevant since I modify how things looks anyway). Yes, I know vista wasn't adopted by business. That's probably because it was never designed to be, with support for huge amounts of ram and processing power (not needed to run excel, word, outlook or ie and therefore not needed for most professional computer systems) and no included version of Microsoft office it obviously wasn't aimed at that.

So, here are a few reasons why I'm willing to actually stick my head out and defend it:
Vista was not simply a dumbed down version of the OS before it (ala my issues with windows XP). It was a new system, had a new interface, new features, new directX, a proper 64 bit system (that was actually stable), inbuilt anti virus software legitimately capable of doing something etc. Sure, it was a pointless upgrade for most professional computers (as stated above), and outside of gamers keen to be early adopters, there was little to no reason for it to be the standard system of the average homeowner. What it did do, however, was utilize the power of then current gen CPUs....Yeah, that's right, windows XP couldn't properly support dual core processors until well into the development of windows vista, but hey, the software only being 3 years behind the hardware isn't that bad, right?

It had the user control shit, yeah I know 'computer literate' people hated it, but then again, those who don't need it were capable of spending the 15 seconds it takes to locate it in control panel and turn it off....All the people complaining that it could not be disabled are utter morons (again, I stress, I've been using the system since RC1 and am positive that, at no point since then, has the UAC been mandatory). The UAC stopped the stupid people (my family) from running 'virus.exe' on my computer when I looked away for 5 minutes. The system was considerably more stable than people made it out to be, I had unbelievable problems with XP, from it flat out refusing to run on my old laptop, to it's retarded performance with dual core processors (early on, at least) and it's stupid bug where it keeps grilling me for audio drivers (which, naturally, it wanted audio drivers for my PCI-E device.....which was a videocard, and had its drivers completely installed).

TL;DR
Vista is fine, there's no immediate reason to go out and buy windows 7 (which, admittedly, is a nicer system to use), and you'd have to be a little beyond stupid to go buy XP. There should be no problems with compatibility, if there is it's on your end and google should be able to help you diagnose it. If all else fails, run the programs in compatibility mode. Oh, and if you really need firsthand evidence that vista>XP, try running XP without SP1 installed and see how fantastic it is.

Isn't there such a thing as compatibility mode for games that require lower OS? You should be able to run Oblivion through Windows XP compatibility mode.

I never really had any problems with Vista. I also have no idea why you can't play games on it. This never happened to me (although I did switch to Win7 as soon as it came out, so I don't know about newer games).

I'm really curious though: how the hell did you get a new computer with Windows Vista? I thought roughly 100% of them had Windows 7 now.

Once you set your system right you shouldnt have trouble with any games.
Ive been using my gaming pc for 4 years with Vista, i still play all the new releases on maxish settings (maxish because there's no DX11 compatibility though unfortunatly)

If you're having problems playing something, try running it either as administrator, or in compatibility mode, should fix most problems. And make sure you've got the latest drivers and patches for everything.

I think Vista definatly is underrated. Its by no means perfect but definatly not as bad as most people let on.

well vista sucks and you should upgrade to windo......WAIT WHAT!... You haden't bought a computer in 7 yearsand wanted a Gameing computer, and you choose to buy a computer with only 2 gb of dedicated RAM...and VISTA?!

I bought my computer about 1.5 years ago and it was fairly cheap, with a good GeForce graphic card and 4gb of dedicated RAM, AND Windows 7.

Sorry dude, but next time you should do some research before purchase!

Why did your software come with hardware? Usually when I buy a new OP I don't have to get a new GPU. Oh wait, did you buy an already built computer? makes sense

OP:
Windows didn't even like Vista, so much so they released 7 after a year

You might need to re-read what he said. 2GB of dedicated graphics memory. He mentioned nothing to do with system RAM.

Considering he only got it recently, i'd say that it's probably a 6950 or 6970.
