I know this question as been asked a lot, but I haven't seen a post since the price drop and now there is a rumor about a new version next year from 01Net.

Basically, the issue I am having is that I have never owned a portable gaming system and I am a "business casual" gamer where the majority of my games are on my computer. I tend to do some traveling for work were I would spend weeks in a hotel and would like a gaming system for my non-working time. Also for conventions because there is no going home until it's over.

The main reason I am thing about a 3DS is because I like the Augmented Reality, it is backwards compatible, and I figure StreetPass will stick around for the next few generations. As for the games, I doubt there will be any I really care about for while (although Driver - Renegade looks neat).

So the question is; Do I buy the 3DS because it is sparkly and new or by the DSi until a "good" system comes out?

Rumor has it [http://wii.ign.com/articles/118/1189759p1.html] that a new version of the 3DS with dual analog sticks is on the way. If you're really interested in it, I'd wait for that one.

"Rumor" is the key word there. Nothing is confirmed, but they have a supposed big announcement on September 13.

I'd go with an older DS. I just got a DS Lite earlier this year (about a month before the 3DS launch). Prices are ridiculously low for them. I got mine for $60.

It's a good piece of hardware, the biggest issue being its lack of software (That can't also be played on a DS), a problem that will fix itself in a bit of time. I say get it. It's a matter of when.

Option 1: Get it now.
If you can find a bunch of good, cheap DS games (as I have), just get one now and by the time you get through the backlog, Kid Icarus, Mario 3D Land, Star Fox and so on will be out. Try going to the Eshop as well. There's some good stuff there if you're willing to look for it.

Option 2: Wait until November or December
Two reasons: One, most of the big games I listed above are coming out for the holiday season. While there is a large library of regular DS games, having something for the 3DS itself would be nice. Also, the rumors going around (which I honestly think is the Escapist jumping the gun a little) could be a good reason to wait as well.

Edit: Well, I should have read the OP a little better... considering you're interested in the backwards compatibility, I say go with Option 1, considering that gets rid of half of Option 2's argument.

Wait for 3DS evolution, that is what I am doing. If you do go with a DSi, get the XL, it is nice. My niece has one.
