Video games, chances are we all love them here. Now the question is how much some of us love them.[footnote]This is a joke, as I can see someone here taking this literally.[/footnote] So, question is simple. Have you ever used a vacation day, moved your days off around, or called in sick to play a video game? If so, what games did you take off for and which method did you choose? For those who said no, any reason why you haven't? Do you think this is an acceptable behavior?

For me, I've done it twice so far. Once for Fallout 4, when I worked a day off to get Tuesday off. I also did it for Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor and worked my days off again to get Tuesday and Wednesday off. I have two more planned for this year as well, one for Total War: Warhammer and Overwatch, as well as Pokemon: Sun and Moon later this year.

Nope. I'm a patient man who can wait for the weekend for my binging. That and the fact my my company doesn't tend to call back the next summer for my seasonal job if you have more then 3 sick days without a doctor's medical note doesn't help, as well as the fact my collage days aren't particularly used on nonsense given I can only miss 3 classes without an automatic fail mark for each class, and I'm a stickler for keeping those in case of emergency.

It also doesn't help that I'm not really into buying games right when they come out. I think in the past few years the closest thing to a release I've bought a game was Xenoblade Chronicles X about a month after it came out, with other games being on average much, much longer after initial release.

The closest I've done was plan to get off of work early one day to attend a Smash Bros tournament at a Convention, if that counts.

Back in college in England, whenever people would wonder where I was they would just check the release calender: "Hey, how come Jake's not here today? Oh right, Dawn of War 2 was just released."

In my defence, I attended a pretty crappy college and am much more committed to my university education (read: "Continue to push assignments right back to the last minute to play games instead").

I used to play Eve Online. Enough said?
Though being in a position that I create my own schedule I could take off whenever I wanted. If the Mothership is being attacked.. it doesn't matter WTF you are doing, you defend it or game over. LOL

Nope. I don't get paid to not work and I'd rather save my vacation days for something actually important. Now I have been tempted in the past to take a day off of school/work to game, but never actually have.

Well, my job is on my own custom hours so provided I'm satisfied with my earnings, I can take a day off whenever I feel like it. Work a few hours/days/weeks, take a month off and binge on anime and video games.

But a 1080 isn't paying for itself.

I gambled failing my exams last year for Witcher 3 by playing it the entire goddamn day instead of studying. Still got good grades, but that was too close for comfort.

Other than that, no, I've never taken a day off of work or university to play a game. Both are way too important to me to just drop either for the sake of entertainment, it's a thing that my parents hammered into me incredibly well.

No. My paycheck is alright, but far from enough to motivate being able to take a day off. I can't even justify staying home when I'm sick. I do, however, have a flexible job so I can leave a few hours earlier when I feel like it as long as I still make my 160 hours each month. I've gone with that route a few times when I've been ill, but still never for a game.

Yes I sometimes do.
And why the fuck not. It is my hobby.
It is like a fisher taking a day off to go fishing when the season opens...

I of course use either overtime or vacation days.

Faking an illnness is not my thing. I'm usually about 3 days sick each year due to mostly colds and thats it.

I had never done this. I mean, I like videogames, but responsibilities are priority for me.

If you are super into a game to the point where you want to schedule vacation time to play it more power to you. That is your time and you can do what you want with it.

If you are calling in sick to play a game, and making your coworkers pick up the slack, that isn't right. When you are young you don't realize that people are relying on you.

I love games but never enough to take vacation time to play them.

I have never done it. I have waited for X years (pending how long I've known about the game), I can wait another eight hours until I"m off of work. I don't begrudge anyone who takes vacation days to do it though because it's your vacation, if you want to spend it to golf or fish or hunt or attend that BDSM Convention or play video games then what do I care?

However...

If you work at a job where you have responsibilities that affect other people and take a sick day for a video game (or golf or fishing or hunting or that BDSM convention because have you SEEN the new whip by "Bad Boyz Whipz"!?!), then someone needs to give you a smack upside the head. Vacation days are fine because they're planned out and we can have a plan in place to pick up the slack but you're leaving all of your co-workers to hang in the wind when you drop a sick bomb on them.

I have not. I work a seasonal job so if you're not basically crippled or it's a serious issue you're going into work.

Yeah I've done it. Both vacation and sick. Most recently for FO 4, though I suspect I'll probably do it again for Mankind Divided.

Working from home...not really. Or even during other work placements. I do not get that much out of gaming to sacrifice a whole day for it. There have been other occasions that warranted time off, through young, personal mistakes. I was troubled and unreliable to say the least. Not proud of it, but the experiences change you in unforseen ways.

EDIT: Misread the title.

Yeah, I did when I was still in school. But I don't really take days off from College, and the few I do I do for Diabetic related health issues, so no, I never take days off just for Video Games.

Taken plenty of days off and played videogames, but never just for the reason of playing said videogame.

I also have no real issue with someone using their vacation days for playing a video game. They are your days and how you use them is none of my business. Though I would still appreciate it if one did not take a day off on like a very busy day were the rest of your colleagues need to pick up the slack due to your absence.

Sick day when you're not sick and you want to play games? I think it's kinda a dick move tbh.
