I'm writing this post because I just seated myself at my desk to decide which game I would use to kill off a couple of hours and realized that I have a pretty decent range of games at my fingertips, something which would have been unimaginable in the period which played host to my most ardent PC gaming, the early to mid 00s.

Steam was always a good idea. When it first came out I remember my CS-geek friend preaching about what it would bring to gaming. It seemed to take a while for them to iron out the kinks and get the service perfected - I first started using it in about 2009 when I suddenly got extremely bored - but needless to say I couldn't imagine a gaming world without steam - or gog.

Here's a bit of a chance to voice your appreication for the program, I guess, but also to voice your opinions on how it might be improved, what it does badly, what it says about Valve and the industry in general. What are your thoughts?

----

As for the main idea of this post, go ahead and share the games you have installed from your steam library. Heck you can tell the whole library if you really want an just embolden the games that are installed but if you're anything like me your library is quite large.

List of games currently installed by sky pies said:
Age of Empires II: HD Edition
Bastion
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Far Cry 2
Grand Theft Auto IV
Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns
Mass Effect 2
Pillars of Eternity
Sengoku
Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter
Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete
Star Wars - Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
STAR WARS Knights of the Old Republic II: Revenge of the Sith (with the super mod)
Thief: Deadly Shadows
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Gold Edition
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Athena Sword
Valkyria Chronicles
For the record, I have not just got them all installed because of a holdover reluctance to be excessive from the times when the GB was more than a just vague and insignificant reminder of finite space on a hard drive.

most of the little indie games take far less than a Gig lol
I genuinely wanted to begin a discussion with everyone about their games but I must say I haven't played a single one of those. I'm not much of an indy gamer, to tell the truth :( I played Beneath a Steel Sky from gog.com but couldn't get past the first few rooms and lost interest.

If there is an indy game out there that doesn't try to confound you but rather tries to give you a thoughtful, earth-shattering story with smooth, albeit simplistic, gameplay and graphics, I'm open to it.

I guess Bastion and Pillars of Eternity aren't indy games ~_~

it allows me to be lazy and i like that

- it auto patches games so i dont have to go hunt them down.

- no mucking around with downloading and installing. its just click the button and it downloads and installs

- i can stream to other computers in the house which is awesome

This post is pretty much my answer. I love the auto patch. For example when I have played a game like League of Legends in a long time I am like great, lets play League!... and an hour long patch. So this feature is amazing and I think most games in general should start having an auto patch option.

As I only bought physical copies of games for a loooong time before joining the ranks of Steam, it has given me the opportunity to buy game I never would have bothered to look up elsewhere. Games like Rogue Legacy, Binding of Isaac, To the Moon and Torchlight would all have been left in the dark for me.

As for what I have installed:

Mark of the Ninja - last played nearly 2,5 years ago. It's an indie title, so it doesn't take up to much space on my hard drive.

RPG Maker VX Ace - Last played around the same time as the above. At one point I seriously considered remaking Final Fantasy X in it, but with Auron as the main character and no Tidus anywhere. Well, that went nowhere, but I had some ideas I thought were decent, like beginning the game at Auron's death by Yunalesca's hand.

System Shock 2 - Last played this summer. I was stoked when it came out on Steam, and it's still a fucking blast to play. Once upon a time I actually hunted down a physical copy of the game from the 90's, and I still have the disc. It feels like I own a part of gaming history.

To The Moon - Last played August 2013. Played through only once, but the story and soundtrack are still I have ever witnessed in a game. Though once I get Life is Strange, I'll perhaps need to reassess that notion.

Torchlight II - Last played last March. I was neck deep into dungeon crawlers at one point, and TL2 satisfied that addiction to no end. The big problem with the game is the gap between Normal and Hard difficulty, but with mods it's easy to rebalance through getting better equipment more often.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent - Last played... OVER 4 YEARS AGO? Fuck I'm getting old.

Bastion - Installed, but never even booted it up. Should though, but there's so much else to play!

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - Last played last Monday. Everything that was good about the original is here, improved, an with tons more items to find.

Crypt of the Necrodancer - Last played last summer. Got it after watching Pewdiepie's video of it. The soundtrack is awesome, and it's one game I can genuinely call innovative. I never would have expected so much depth and tactical thinking out of a game that can be played with 3 fingers.

Dark Void Zero - Last played about a year ago (for 6 minutes). Bought it at a Steam sale for about the price of a chocolate bar, but never got around to really playing it.

Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition - Last played last summer. A game I'd really want to get into, but the mechanics are so different to games I'm used to playing I'd really need time and effort to get adjusted to them.

Fallout: New Vegas - Last played last August. Like Fallout 3 but better, more varied and better written. Typical Bethesda game though, which means the combat and movement have absolutely no weight to them, and the endgame is a total borefest.

Final Fantasy III - Last played last summer. Got it in the summer sale. Played for a bit, until I realized the quicksave doesn't carry if you die. Fucking pricks.

Half-Life: Source - Last played last February. Definitely deserving of the classic status it holds. The environments are definitely dated and show the graphical limitations of the time, but the pacing and gunplay are great.

Medal of Honor: Airborne - Last played last summer. A bit of a curiosity since I'm rarely into "realistic" shooters.

South Park: The Stick of Truth - Last played last summer. Hilarious and entertaining, but in-fucking-sultingly easy and unbalanced, which really drags down the replay value.

The Stanley Parable - Last played 2 years ago. Brilliant as an experience, but doesn't hold that much substance as a game

Star Wars Battlefront II - Last played last summer. Bought it, enjoyed the nostalgia for a while, and then realized how repetitive the single player is, not to even mention the pointlessness of trying to play on the harder difficulty setting.

Stronghold Crusader (+Extreme) HD - Last played last July. One of the cornerstones of my childhood. I played it endlessly as a happy prepubescent, and still enjoy it today, though the flaws definitely show themselves more clearly to an adult.

Team Fortress 2 - Last played about a year ago. A game I can only play for about an hour before having to stop due to frustration, but it provides a rush like no other game I've played.

Terraria - Last played last February. A game that needs a bit of time to figure out the exact mechanics it seems.

Undertale - The thing I'm most excited to start playing. I've heard so much good about it, and best of all, I haven't been spoiled about anything!

X-COM: Enemy Unknown - Last played in July. I'm on the last mission, but need to level my Psi-capable soldiers first, and just can't be arsed.

All this, to which I must add the ease of Steam Workshop, which takes out so much of the hassle in installing mods.

Whee!

As for Steam... its a storefront. I think what it provides more then makes up for the 'Built in DRM,' especially since DRM is almost certainly inevitable (If GOG proves that wrong one day by butchering Steam and mounting Valve's corpse on a pike, I'd be surprised), and Steam's version of it is much less troublesome then most other DRM attempts.

I think most of the problem with Steam isn't in what it does do, but what it could do. It's weaseled its way into every aspect of the games it hosts, and that is a worry, as the recent 'Payed to Play' mod problem showed. But they seem to be trying to make everything work in good faith.

I joined Steam on the day my copy of Half-Life II arrives, so I guess that means I'm kind of a Steam old fart.

Steam is really pushing paid mods, they just put them in Rust, they also refuse to curate steam greenlight so yeah pretty much they used to be all right but they've stopped caring to the point where its starting to get bad.

The only reason I use Steam is the community. It's the reason I started paying for games. Even when I've played a non-Steam version of a game, I go to their forums to read about it or discuss it.

The games I have on my HTPC:

Avencast
Bejeweled 3
BookWorm Deluxe
Dead Hungry Diner
Divine Divinity
Faerie Solitaire
LYNE
MirrorMoon EP
Puddle
Redshirt
Reus
Rochard
Saira
Space Pirates and Zombies
Toki Tori
Wake
Worms Reloaded

IS there an easy way to pull up a text list of owned games? Because I'd do this, but I'm not typing all of them out. My hands hate me for gaming already.

What has Steam done? Well, it's normalised DRM and got people to accept digital/physical parity.

At this point, I guess it's a necessary evil.

It's not a horrible thing or the death of gaming. It's just. A product of a culture. If you look at PSN/XBL and similar such things, and how interconnected everything has become, and the emphasis on sharing with others, it was only a matter of time before PC gaming has a similar sort of thing.

Which it sorta had with xfire, raptr, etc, but now Steam, combining digital distribution with the social aspects of achievements, profiles, account-based "ownership" and whatnot, it's just the de-facto PC gaming version of PSN/XBL now.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes I guess I wish I could just turn it all off. That's more a problem with me and society and our current culture than the platform itself, though. I mean, conceptually, I love the idea of making it easy to show people that cool moment in a game. I really like having statistics for my own playing. I guess I don't like the idea of other people viewing my profile and judging each other for their time spent playing a certain game, or how public a lot of the information can be. I also don't like how everything has to be gated through steam now. Can't even buy a game in a box without having to activate it on steam. So if something happens to steam in a few years, what happens to the game? There are plenty of instances of games being pulled from steam, like what happened with Batman: Arkham Knight. And some people couldn't get refunds. Another quick example: I own a game called Nexuiz. THQ went bankrupt and liquidated their assets, and now this game has been pulled from the store. The only way I can start the game is in offline mode.

I have plenty of concerns about "ownership" with DRM-based solutions.
I sometimes wish that publishers weren't held hostage and basically forced to put the game on Steam, because if they don't, there's a bunch of people that won't buy or play the game.
I prefer purchasing stuff through things like GOG or humble bundle, but I do activate keys on Steam, and it is nice to have it all in one place, and if I had to make room for the boxes for all, whatever, 300 games I had, that would be a difficult task.
There's plenty of fantastic things about it, and I do really like how the profiles and groups work (though it would be really nice to be able to disable group notifications, still not an option after all these years.

Most of the games I own on steam, I've played in some other form, at a friends house, or in a stand-alone download, and there's no way to have it import information (for example, if I played Warframe for 2 years before it was on Steam, there's no way to port over my achievements or my time played into Steam), but aside from these minor gripes, I'd say it's overall a great thing for most people, a great thing for the PC gaming industry right now, and a requirement towards how things are going to move in the future. I just don't like it.

Sidenote: I have 88 games installed and 361 owned on steam, and at least 20 keys from indiegala and bundlestars I haven't even redeemed yet. So. I don't think I should paste that list here.

I was going to type up the games I have installed, but that I realized I have 350 some odd games installed over a potential 695.

I then realized I am not going to type that.

You seem confused, Steam started sales on September 12th 2003, XBox Live started selling games November 2005, and PSN store launched November 2006, both consoles have been aping Steam not the reverse.

Been through the shut down of an online store already, they released the keys to me as well as an installer, I still have all of them on an external drive. Steam has 125 million active accounts now
and hit 12.5 million users logged in at one time, it's not going anywhere, fear for PSN and XBox Live instead.

If the game relied on servers run by a third party then offline is the only option, but you can re-download and install it as often as you want.

There are plenty of other options, publishers and developers want on Steam, no one holds a gun to their heads.

Uh... Steam's okay, I guess... So far, it made me realize two things since getting a Steam account:1. You can list anything within your personal game library... So, seeing my friend's notifications say "X is playing with their PINGAS", for example, just makes that apparent...
2. Out of all the games I got from Steam so far, I can only run about 3-4 of them at best... The rest I could run even before listing them within my Steam game library...Other than that, I still want a Steam controller... That shit looks boss!

I think steam is unnecessary, but I don't think it is malicious or anything. I like buying games on disk, and I don't like having to go through a third party to install them on my computer, but maybe I'm just stuck in my old ways. I cannot, however complain about THOSE AMAZING BIYEARLY DEALS

I've had a Steam account since 2003. There've been ups. There've been downs. I've had moments of immense satisfaction using the client. I've had moments of pure frustration from aspects of or issues with the client.

All in all? I view Steam as an overall boon for my gaming hobby, and the industry as a whole. Valve's made some missteps, and will probably continue to make new ones, but in the end they've done a lot of good for the industry and the community.

Now if only they could release some new games...

I left out the tools, SDKs, and backups[footnote]I have backups of every game I've purchased on Steam. That way, even if I can't access the Steam servers, I still have my games.[/footnote]. I'm...kind of ashamed by how many I have installed.

At this point Steam's become a lot more than a storefront. The sheer breadth of community features and tools alone are unparalleled in the industry.

The client has a lot of room for improvement, however.

The DRM aspects of Steam only apply to games or software utilizing Steamworks or some other DRM system (like Uplay, etc). Any game not using Steamworks is likely able to be launched and played without Steam running.

Other than that, I still want a Steam controller... That shit looks boss!
The controller's pretty fantastic. I've been fiddling with mine for a month now and it's really grown on me. I never use my Xbox360 controller anymore and only ever use my Dualshock 4 when I use my PS4.

I still suck at some first person games when using it, but I'm getting better. Certainly better than I usually do with dual analog sticks.

I see Steam as online shopping but better.

I mean they both offer great savings over the retail/ physical copies but Steam got the community, badges, message/ friendlist and etc.

Yes my current list is quite small but only because I have alot of will power when it come to the Steam sales (I see it as a waste of buying a game and never playing it even if you bought it very cheap. You should spend some time playing it if you had spend money on it). In saying so it make my current wishlist kinda long (got about 28 games on my wishlist).
